The "usurpation" was over control of the miners. Norgalle saw them as HIS subjects, so when the Demon Lord tried to corrupt them, Norgalle saw that as a usurpation of his dominion over them.

That was a hell of a fight against Lotus and its horde of creepy crawlies. Norgalle really rallied the troops while Tatsuya went absolutely ape shit on those creatures alongside Xylo. And then ofc we had our favorite pint sized goddess over here providing support. She deserves all the head pats and praise! lol. The Hero team was in top form this week.

My suspicion is that most of the Heroes aren't actually as vile as people interpret them to be, and many are probably innocent of their crimes or only committed them due to extenuating circumstances. Which sort of makes sense...you probably don't want to give super-powers to a psychotic axe-murder.

I think this is fairly obvious. Norgalle at the very least seems to be a genuinely good person given that he was so dead-set on saving those left behind, literal willingness to die in order to save those trapped, and ability to rally their spirits. He may be crazy but he's certainly got a strong moral compass.

He's also tactically sound. Listing Xylo to die first (since he'll run out of magic/luminesence first), then himself (he was saving reserves), and lastly Tastuya is the correct order. Him not putting himself first (suicidal nobility) or last shows he knows at least some tactical worth.

It's definitely a case of "the church will do anything to stay in power" kind of thing going on.

I did love when Kivia (commander) basically called the priest useless. He was such a bastard the entire time

I would also like to point out, that the priest here was the same priest from Episode 1.

He was in one of the first scenes, as the transport for Teoritta was being overrun. The few remaining knights wanted to prioritize saving the Goddess, but this scummy priest gave the order to abandon her. He also had this really weird look in his eyes as he gave the order to abandon the Goddess to monsters.

This horrified the knight, and he was about to accuse the scummy priest of something before he got shredded by a monster. The priest then scampers off.

So not only was this priest abandoned Teoritta to monsters, but he was the only survivor of the attack while deep in monster-infested territory.

We see one of hte monsters hell bent on chasing Dotta, but the priest gets to scamper away unscathed?

Then add in the further wrinkle that Kivia was prepared to die screening the escape of the Goddess this little shit so happily abandons.

The framing really was warped enough that it makes me think the church wanted Teoritta lost to the Blight. And they either considered Kivia's order an acceptable loss or deliberately wanted her gone as well.

Especially since Xylo/Teoritta weren't ordered back to the capital. The original plan was to send her back, yeah? And if Heroes are so reviled, why would the Church let one make a pack with such an important super weapon like Teoritta?

Instead, they just send them on another suicide mission...

It's all just so hella sus, and that damn priest is in the middle of it all.

It really makes me think the Demon Lords are corrupted goddesses because why abandon her? How did he go unscathed? Does the church end up controlling the monsters? Keep people in fear and the military busy to stay in power?

Yeah, go rewatch the first few minutes of Episode 1.

It's not only the same guy, but he is acting super hella crazy sus in that brief scene. Not only does his crazy eyes *scare* one of the few remaining knights, but this bastard *smiles* as that knight dies before scampering away.

If anything, it looked like hte knight was about to attack the priest, or at least, saw him as an enemy right before one of the faeries killed that knight.

This happens in the first couple of minutes of hte first episode, so we have no context, but rewatching it now...

HELLA sus on so many levels.

At this point, I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case.
Demon Lord Lotus from this episode also stated that he "found it".
And it looks like this was aimed at the goddess specifically.

Maybe Lotus wanted to make another Demon Lord and that's also what the church wants to keep the war going

I think her limited interactions with Xylo, seeing in passing how much he actually cares about Teoritta (which goes against her original image of him as a goddess-abhoring murderer) and seeing how little the priest this episode actually cares about his citizens has already made her a bit more skeptical of the church.

She's already showing more kindness and trust in Xylo and less suspicion over his relationship wth Teoritta and chastised the priest there at the end. The real question is what's going to happen to her as she becomes more suspicious.

It's nice, but I hope it stays small and limited, at least for a while.

It's kind of important to how this world and particularly how heroes work that they are reviled because everyone knows (or thinks) they are the worst kinds of criminals, only kept on a leash by the threat of death, punishments and losing themselves over time.

I'd say it'll be a mixed bag. The church is shady af, so they most likely put many of its enemies to the frontlines with some scheme horseshit, but there'll be some legit criminals for sure, serial murderers f.e.

We also learned that the demons can “corrupt souls” in that episode. If they have mind control as one of their powers, it would not be surprising if they managed to take control of some of the people in charge and are trying to get rid of the ones they don’t control.

I mean, even if some rival decided to get rid of Xylo by sending him to get killed by a demon lord with fake orders, it would not make sense to send the Goddess to be killed or taken over as well… unless the person doing that actually was on the demons side. And if that is the case, it would not surprise me either if Norgalle originally was the real king or another member of the royal family.

I hope he isn't because the idea that heroes (and "kings") come in all shapes and sizes from all walks of life is way cooler. I think he witnessed a "leader" act in a way that was so truly horrific that it sent him off the ledge into insanity - hyperfixating on his own ideal of a leader to protect himself from the reality. That would fit in with the message the anime seems to be sending. The author is clearly trying to illustrate what real leadership looks like with Norganelle and contrasting it with the actual in-universe political leaders.

Pretty early in the show, though! Maybe I'm wrong.

Xylo might be the protagonist, but Norgalle was the MVP. He had displayed excellent leadership skills to rally the labourers. He also had the audacity to amputate his own leg to free himself from Lotus and allow Xylo to deliver the finishing move.

For most of this series, the heroes had been treated as lower than scum but the labourers were the first to appreciate them, and this happened even before they got out of the cave. At least the townspeople now gave them the respect they deserve. It might just be one town, but it's a step in the right direction.

Kivia already had some respect for Xylo in the last episode, even asking for his advice. She is suspicious of them, but at this point, I think she very well understands that Xylo isn't the vile person that she thought he was. And from the looks of it, they will have lots of missions to face together in the future. I do hope they grow closer since that's the character relationship I am most interested in after Xylo and Teoritta.

What I find also a bit funny (and I wondered that seemingly no one pointed out yet) is that they seem to use a lot of free sounds for the general sound design. Like the owl sound in the night or just the screaming sound the creatures make in this (and last) episode are all sounds I have heard in games. Not that this devalues it, I just find it funny that I can track so many sounds.

The art style is incredible, and even though quality has decreased slightly post-episode 1, it's remained a cut above everything except effectively *Frieren* for me this season.

The art design is great too. The demon lord this episode was just such an out there, cool concept to execute. I don't know if there was artwork to work off of but I like how distinct it was from the demon lord in episode 1—really brings a bit more breadth to the worldbuilding.

I suspect many if not most of the condemned criminal-heroes are/were actually much better people than the officials to had them executed. It seems people who resist corruption and ineptitude are targeted for elimination.

Since apparently you don't even need the person's body to resurrect someone, all kinds of shenanigans are possible in this setting.

Also, I kinda doubt the mechanic is reserved just for the penal heroes, like doesn't that mean any asshole church higher up can just posses a new body and extend their life?

Though they did mention the process involves dragging person's soul from hell or something, so it might be officialy banned for people other than heroes.

I'm still waiting for the mechanic to kick in, it's such an interesting gimmick but the show so far stands on it's own without it, kinda reminds me a bit or ReZero, though the connection is thin.

Tatsuya was an absolute unit throughout the fight here, he supported Xylo in every way he could by advancing thru the decoy part of lotus since he can't be affected by the ringing sound made which opened up to finding the main body. Then pulling Lotus away with super strength apparently to open up the finishing blow made by both Norgalle and Xylo. That man went beast mode forreal!

My assumption is that Tatsuya was an isekai traveler from Japan (losing his mind after being hero-sentenced). Which would be a funny subversion of the usual "isekai guy is the main hero" template - this time, the guy you'd expect to be the show's main character isn't (though he's still a "hero").

There are some bits of lore here and there but all three episodes (including a 45-min one) has been quite action-heavy.

But despite that, I found the characters are developing well so far despite the lack of time and place to do so. I’m already so invested in Xylo, Norgalle and Tatsuya despite seeing them fight most of the time.

And that’s not mentioning how good the actual fight was. It was a good mix of the animators going crazy while still being able to follow the fight.

Glad there was a mostly happy ending and Teoritta was adorable as always with the flowers. Intrigued to see where this goes next and also what other characters they’re going to make get invested in.

Also, that priest guy got served. “Flaunts his authority on his chest but never fought a single battle”. Ooof. And we also know the commander can stand up to such figures and probably take pride in what she does as well

Okay, aside from Norgalle being an absolute chad this episode, I really loved the formal introduction of the power system. In Episode 1, it felt like Xylo had unlimited explosive power but it comes from 'luminescence' which is limited and Xylo runs out of it this episode.

I wonder if this 'luminescence' is the thing which was created in modern times and led to the whole downfall of civilisation(considering there was a tank in the background last episode).

There was a Holy Knight named 'Rajit' (Indian name) in this episode and we already have 'Tatsuya' (Japanese name) while all others come from other different languages and cultures which also supports this theory that the world is post-apocalyptic rather than generic european fantasy.

The Demon Lord's screaming towards Tatsuya terrified me. I really love the demons in this anime because they are very scary. Also was that Demon Lord searching for Teo or Xylo??

Last week I finally watched Clevatess and now that I have caught up with both of these anime, I can confidently say that ... I FUCKING LOVE DARK FANTASY ANIME! GIVE ME MORE!!!

An older but top tier dark fantasy is Claymore. Unfortunately it has an anime original ending which sucks ass and probably prevents any future seasons from being made, but the manga is complete so you can pick up from like the 2nd or 3rd last anime episode and continue on from there. Very much recommend.

The manga however carries on the quality of what you'd expect and the ending is generally well received which cant be taken for granted nowadays. If you liked the story, then definitely dont let it be tainted by the anime original ending.

They already mentioned that luminescence is just sun energy. The sun is keeping the runes alive. So as long as they are fighting in the day, they have unlimited uses. At least for the runes Xylo uses. It only becomes an issue once it gets dark or they are in a cave.

I think Teoritta has figured out that he's not taking well to having another goddess after having to kill his last one himself – she's certainly figured he's been keeping her at an arm's distance for her own safety – and so she realised that if she wants to help people as she wants, she'll need to be a bit independent and just trust that he'll have her back.

And as much as Xylo doesn't want another Goddess dying on his account, I think he respects it. He's a lot more caring about people's lives and helping them than he tries to claim to himself.

the storyboards remain as ambitious as ever, but i feel like some of the action anime, especially in the first half of the episode struggles to keep up with the storyboards, in the same way the action did in the prior episodes. not to say there wasnt a lot of good stuff though, there absolutely was, and the character drawings remained strong and consistent throughout

the episode hasnt been posted to sakugabooru yet, so i'll just describe the scenes i'll talk about

that one scene of the tree growing reminded me a lot of [this scene](https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/179918) from kizumonogatari, i really like how the tree was drawn

a lot of tatsuya's scenes were really well drawn and executed. this episode had an obscene amount of background animation, and the effects work remains strong

This series is tackling the idea of propaganda in a way I can't help but appreciate. There's the obvious dynamic of the premise, where "good" labels have been corrupted into punishments to be discriminated against, but the show is following through on exploring the idea.

The miners show firsthand experience and personal investment wins against hearsay. The Priest being the only person so far referring to the Goddess as a tool shows that the authority are openly aware that the public messaging differs from their perspective. One villager looking away in shame from Xylo while others change their tune.

Always nice when good stuff is happening in a good-looking show. I did get a little tired of seeing centipedes explode, though.

Norgalle definitely stole the show this episode he may be a false king ? but he acts like a great king and I like the Xylo plays into it.

Tatsuya seems to be a full blown berserker not even being affected by the voice/scream of the demon lord either because his mind is already fucked up from so many resurections or something else ?

Teoritta needs to be protected but I like the dynamic between her and Xylo more and more after she called him out on him wanting to keep her back to protect her.

That demon lord said I found you ? was it refering just to the humans in general or someone/something specific there xylo teoritta or ? Something to keep in mind.

Kivia was also great this episode even if she didnt have a lot of screen time it seems she is slowling seeing there is something more to these heroes especially xylo.

Norgalle also said something curious, I am coming to save you Norgalle ? what does that mean I hope we get to find out more about him and Tatsuya also.

Random thoughts:

Norgalle was MVP this episode. Dude isn't all talk, and I cringed a bit at the self-amputation. I do want to know his backstory...Guy is so honorable I have trouble believing he wasn't set up like Xylo, or at the very least didn't deserve the sentence he got.

Wasn't expecting a plant monster in a mine, so that was a surprise.

I like how Kivia went from "Heroes are scum!" in the first episode to "Heroes are a lot better than my useless superiors". I do wonder if this trajectory is eventually just going to get her sentenced to be a hero as well. Church seems to not really appreciate criticism.

Fuck that Priest!!! However another beautiful episode. Big up to the Mad King! He definitely knows how to rally his people, you can see how the mine workers perked up when he reminded them of their bravery. I’m really interested to see more of him/hear about his story as the season goes on, coz the ability to rally men as a leader is not some skill to just happen upon. That shit is learned through trial and error, and that battle hardened skill was on full display today.

Tatsuya is a beast yet again, went so hard he even had to deflate LOL.

Seeing Xylo’s interaction with Teoritta is so heartbreaking. His trauma has forced him to reject almost any form of attachment, but rightfully so as his situation is a horrific one, getting too attached could prove emotionally detrimental. She is so eager to prove herself and fulfil her life’s purpose as one who serves, yet Xylo has seen what the pursuit of that can end up looking like. Its very understandable why he is dissuading her from this pursuit.

Honestly the quality of this anime has blown me away since episode 1. I hope they can keep it up all the way through, as this is probably the best animated series I have seen, possibly since I started watching anime 20 years ago.

Damn what an intense episode, I really liked how it progressed with them finding the workers, having them become an army to protect themselves, and it eventually leading to them fighting the Demon Lord was a lot of fun to watch.

Tatsuya getting even more berserk with pumped up muscles, the way they and he inflated after was funny. Xylo acting as support was an interesting change, but the highlight was definitely King cutting his own leg to save his people, that was crazy. I am curious about what happened during the lead up to the hit, he called out his own name so I'm wondering what he saw or what he was referring to.

I like that the Foreman sees the heroes as people and that his family also had no hesitation when talking with them, it was nice to see Xylo get some appreciation even if Teoritta wanted it for herself lol. I also liked how Kivia didn't let it get interrupted by that priest, it's nice to see these sort of moments.
