It's very well directed and animated. It's a suspense thriller that is also an examination of the entertainment industry in Japan. While it has its issues, namely things that have yet to be animated, it is definitely worth a watch. The anime really elevates the manga with its direction.
BUT, based on the other shows you have listed, I don't think it will be in your interest based on you seeming to like mostly action / fighting based genres
That said, not everyone likes every genre. I think you are perfectly valid in just saying "Thanks, but it's not in my interest" and going from there
Doesn't mean you have to watch it. Just enjoy their reactions and ride the wave. (I know, because there have been a TON of shows that I haven't watched in the same situation. Like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones... LOST!!!)
Like I said originally, you can always give it the classic 3 episode try.
Especially for OnK, because depending on how it's listed wherever you watch anime, you will need to watch either the first episode alone (if it is 1 hour and 22 mins in length) or as a bundle of three episodes. It originally aired as one movie length episode that took the Internet by storm.
Don't get fooled by its art style and the happy colours. It's not as shallow as it seems.
It’s an anime masterpiece. I watched the first episode not realizing it was movie-length. I felt like I was trapped in a jujutsu kaisen domain of anxiety and tears lmao it’s one of the very few animes where the characters are realistically found in different outfits and hairstyles, entirely different environments and projects that dynamically change. The characters are adults at the beginning before dying and waking up as future children, and then the show starts after episode one when they’ve grown into late teenagers.
There are entire in-show music videos like [this](https://youtu.be/c7E-tgmFuzw) (47 million views) which come at the end of having watched the characters shoot on set. It’s rich with meaning you’d only grasp in having watched. Speaking of which, the opening “Idol” was #1 on Bilboard Global for a time, the first-pass edit got 648 million views on YouTube. Here’s the latest [version](https://youtu.be/PgBvV9ofjmA?si=nJjQlKIUIGUurj18) if you’re curious. Season two’s [opening](https://youtu.be/PAcf55v6zqQ?si=iDU4IB0-uO32841o) (~40 million views) stands out, too.
It’s incredibly difficult to pin down the genre or capture fairly in a synopsis. It’s technically a psychological thriller and a drama, but I jumped in expecting it to be a generic “idol anime” only to be railroaded with supernatural murder mystery.
You said it’s “not your genre,” but it wasn’t mine either, or so I thought. I went in doubtful as someone who typically enjoys the genres of the shows you mentioned. I hope that helps.
Edit: if you watch, DO NOT read about it elsewhere because the synopsis is inevitably spoiler dense in a way other shows aren’t, and the first episode will hit you like a mac truck on the interstate.
The premise of the first episode is about the most immature thing ever. Every Oshi no Ko fan says that it's a genius premise (pfft).
So yes, the start is a cartoon.
After that first episode, I'm enjoying Oshi no Ko quite a bit.
But it has a shit ton of exposition, so much exposition, and it comes out of a single mouth, the red-haired chatterbox pseudo-narrator.
That's about all the criticism I have for it. You'd probably enjoy it (I'll eventually get around to watching season 3, but am not in a rush).
Oh, I forgot, the fans claim that the manga has a terrible ending. And yet they still claim that Oshi no Ko well written before that "badly written ending" was written. Such delicious irony.
I recommend watching episode 1 if you want to ironically laugh your butt off at the dumbest twist ever.
