The K-On Movie In Dub Is So Confusing

Its also kinda funny, but mostly confusing. Since they are traveling to an English speaking country, the scenes where they learn English are very odd to watch in the dub 😭 Considering rewatching it in sub, but have any of you guys watched the movie in dub? Or other shows/movies where they go to English speaking places as Japanese people (but still has an English dub), im curious.

People on here get their panties in a twist whenever dubs are so much as mentioned because they can’t bear the thought of other people enjoying things differently from themselves. It’s not a position based in logic, so don’t expect a logical response from them.

Well we had a thread a literally a few hours ago where there was a guy complaining about a dub and saying it was robotic, ruined the anime and thought it was the real thing. But the entire thread had to explain to him that this was the choice of the dub company.

That is what some people are getting hung up about. When the dub is used against the anime when it only should be against the dub.

Sorry that’s the folly of dubs. In some contexts they completely ruin the nuance of entire scenes. The Japanese language is full of onomatopoeia, particular vocal sounds and things that don’t quite translate. As well as times when they use French, German and English words as flavour text. EG often in fantasy stuff for spell names. The switching between them is thoroughly interesting.

The K-on Movie, has to be watched in Japanese. It is just too cute in the subbed version.

Well, yes? If you strip a piece of media of its linguistic setting and its cultural subtleties, of course it's gonna be confusing. If you watch a movie based in New York in french, it's gonna lose a lot of its meaning too.

I did watch it in dub, like with the rest of the show, back when I still picked mostly dubs. I don't remember it being all that confusing, maybe just funny to think about? But easy enough to grasp. Then again I watched it 5-6 years ago at this point so I don't remember much.

If there had been dozens of downvotes, that's when I'd start wondering. One or two feels more like random chance and probably doesn't matter. Could've been a misclick and then someone else bandwagoned by instinct, could've been someone who misunderstood me, could've been someone against dubs, it's really just up in the air. With a lot more downvotes, there would likely be something more concretely negative about my comment that I'd have to consider

I knew those jokes wouldn’t translate well so I watched it subbed. The rest of the dub is fine but the movie makes no sense dubbed if you don’t know the context

I actually like how the dub turns it into an almost surreal comedy as the girls struggle to understand English while they talk amongst themselves in English. I usually watch K-ON! subbed but when I watched the movie dubbed I thought those scenes were hilarious, even if not for the reasons it was originally meant to be funny.

Awkward movie translation convention aside though, I think the K-ON! dub is overall an excellent dub. In particular the casting is excellent, with the English VA’s sounding similar enough to their Japanese counterparts that when they start singing in Japanese the transition is almost seamless.

Oh, wait, this is r/anime. Grrr an English dub killed my parents or something.

yes lol, it was pretty funny. the k-on dub is one of the most perfect dubs for its time in my opinion, but to be honest I don't watch much from that year anyways. k-on was great
