What's the point with 'Fly me to the moon' in anime ?

I saw recently an edit of Asa Mitaka on Reddit with a ref of the song 'Fly me to the moon' and I remembered about the endings of Evangelion neon genesis episodes. Why this music ?? Is there a context I don't know about about this music and anime ?

It's a very popular song, it pops up in lots of western-made stuff too. Frank Sinatra was kind of a big deal. That's it.

Let me correct you there: Frank Sinatra *is* a big deal. Just because he's dead hasn't changed that. He's one of the most important figures in establishing the modern music industry, and his music still charts periodically.

I LOVE Frank Sinatra's music!!!
He is indeed very important historically and still has influence today. He's made music with Bing Crosby and even with Quincy Jones (in "Get Me to the Church")

You can read it in various different ways.

Its a song about romance and/or connection, which is what several characters in the show want to but fail to achieve.

You can read a desire to fly to the moon as an allusion to human transcendence.

You can see the variations of the song as a reflection on the changes the characters go through in the narrative.

There are probably a lot of other things you *could* read into it if you wanted to,

All or none of that could have been the intention. Maybe Anno just liked the song.

It was actually popular in the early 1960s; I remember it as an instrumental by IIRC Joe Harnell.
