It sucks but it would suck even more if they delivered a bad movie
nezeta2026-01-23 05:05
This seems to be the third delay (winter 2024 -> winter 2025 -> Feb 2026 -> 2026?)...
Slow-Boysenberry31502026-01-23 05:21
Multiple delays is often a bad sign. Cyberpunk 2077, Skull & Bones, Duke Nukem Forever etc.
JustToViewPorn2026-01-23 05:25
Cyberpunk was originally in 2013, so it was delayed by 64 years. We’ll all be dead before we see this moviefilm.
ball_throwerAFK2026-01-23 05:26
Spiderverse
alphadelta4842026-01-23 05:26
But also, Resident Evil 4, Persona 5, Breath of the Wild, Metroid Dread, Witcher 3 were all delayed multiple times, so you can often get genre defining experiences too.
Korkez112026-01-23 08:55
Also Silksong
theodoreroberts2026-01-23 09:44
Silksong was not delayed though. They just took their time and has not announced the release date until it was ready.
noam_good_name2026-01-23 12:40
silksong was delayed at least once and then stopped revealing it's release day to prevent "delays"
thaneekl2026-01-23 05:26
Or as bad as BOTW 2015 > 2016 > 2017
moiax2026-01-23 06:43
Kizumonogatari got delayed like 40 times and it was still bangin'
Mr_Zaroc2026-01-23 10:15
Also both movies are shaft.
I am pretty sure they are cooking
Iloveahrisears2026-01-23 06:45
I'd say it's a good sign for a movie, especially for Shaft. They'll often make really big improvements from TV->Blurays, and the Kizu delays resulted in some of the best looking anime movies ever made.
Etheo2026-01-23 08:12
Fate Strange Fake with its many delays and still banging.
Jellionani2026-01-23 08:23
> After nine years in development, hopefully it was worth the wait
incognito_side2026-01-23 10:21
I played Cyberpunk 2077 last summer and it was one of the best games I've ever played. Another delay probably would have helped a ton.
AliceinTeyvatland2026-01-23 06:05
This is gonna be some meta thing where Homura don't want her story with Madoka to end.
FlaminScribblenaut2026-01-23 06:56
I (have just chosen to) believe.
sudolicious2026-01-23 06:07
What's funny about this, is I'm a huge madoka fan, but I'm actually very fine with this movie continuing to be delayed since I kinda stepped back a bit from anime for a while. So in a way, this feels like Madokami herself delaying this movie just to wait for me.
(pls don't ask me on how many anti-psychotics I am)
OctavePearl2026-01-23 06:07
Feb 2026 IS part of Winter 2025, that's not delay that's just specifying the date
movies are weird about what Winter means, it was supposed to come out year ago and then was delayed once to this year, and now this is second delay
HikkingOutpit2026-01-23 06:25
No they are not. The seasons are very well defined in the anime industry, they use the season names in lieu of business quarters:
Winter = January 1 to March 31
Spring = April 1 to June 30
Summer = July 1 to September 30
Fall = October 1 to December 31
OctavePearl2026-01-23 06:34
the first delay, from winter 2024 to winter 2025, happened on august 2024 - months after TV winter 2024 was already long over.
for movie marketing purposes, Winter <year> means december of that year and beginning of the next one, that's just how movies do things
zairaner2026-01-23 10:20
> movies are weird about what Winter means
did you just not read this part in the comment you responded too? that movies have different seasons from regular seasons of seasonal anime is what makes them weird
YayPepsi2026-01-23 11:04
Feb 2026 is part of winter 2026.
baquea2026-01-23 06:11
For comparison, Rebellion was announced less than two years after the TV series finished airing, and released eight months later.

On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

GTA 6 or Madoka movie first?
imaginary_num6er2026-01-23 05:22
More like Youjo Senki S2 or GTA 6
FetchFrosh2026-01-23 05:33
Madoka's "Concept Movie" that was released to tease this movie was released before Youjo Senki Season 1 was even announced.
dwarfarchist90012026-01-23 07:35
Gen Urobuchi started writing the script for Walpurgisnacht Rising in 2013, the same year that the 1st Youjo Senki light novel was released. And the script was finished by 2015 at latest, 2 years before Youjo Senki S1 aired.

the Kizumonogatari wait was miserable and i got into the series late, my friend who watched Bake when it aired was in the trenches.
moichispa2026-01-23 11:11
Original Madoka TV series production was a little chaos, one of the episodes was sent to the station 4 hours before airing, If it were to be on the streaming age it would be delayed episode for us since you can't translate and edit in 4 hours probably.
atropicalpenguin2026-01-23 13:20
They aired a Magia Record episode that was missing voicelines!
ByzantineTech2026-01-24 00:08
More than missing voice lines, it was just flat out clearly not finished.

Better a delayed movie than a bad movie.
And it better be really, really good.
Relic_Rawr2026-01-23 08:25
It will be a good movie. Whether it will be received well? We’ll see. I mean, look at Rebellion. In my opinion it’s one of the greatest pieces of media ever made, but that’s just me. lol
Raghav_Singhania2026-01-23 09:38
not just you
madoka had the perfect ending
anything extra should have ruined it but they made something even better
PerceptionOk85432026-01-23 16:44
But not everyone agrees with you. I saw a lot of people who said it wasn’t needed, it destroyed Homura character etc. The community was divided. I disagree with it tho, it was a masterpiece
BosuW2026-01-23 18:01
It definitely was not needed. But I am very glad to have it.
ponyphonic12026-01-23 23:41
I hated the ending at first and had to rethink the entire show. It's one of my favorite films now.
PerceptionOk85432026-01-23 23:51
Bro tell me about it. When I watched Madoka for the first time in 2017, I got so mad at Rebelion that I rewatched the anime 2 days later and pretended it’s the true ending and the movie doesn’t exist.
Then I rewatched everything in 2021 and changed my opinion, I think I needed to grow up to understand the movie lol. It’s great. Can’t wait to rewatch Madoka again once the new movie comes out
Relic_Rawr2026-01-24 00:17
Rebellion is definitely one of those films you have to think about then watch again. I was also unhappy with it on my first watch lol

pewell12026-01-23 05:16
hell yeah, if shaft delays it, you know it’s gonna be good
NeroColeslaw2026-01-23 05:17
Every delay kills my hope for this movie more. I know Shaft has a track record for delaying production significantly, and it hasn't always resulted in a bad product. But I can't say this makes me feel good after having waited 13 years.
Iloveahrisears2026-01-23 09:51
Shaft's track record of delaying production results in good products. I don't see how it could possibly make it worse?
CosmicPenguin_OV1032026-01-23 05:18
Well looks like I can continue to postpone my long delayed Madoka re-watch then...back to sleep...zzz...
wispywoo2026-01-23 05:20
Them delaying it actually gives me more faith in the movie, than if they just forced it out.
plsdontattackmeok2026-01-23 05:27
Wonder what the main causes are.
Bonvantius2026-01-23 09:56
Studio Shaft is one of the worst studios in the industry right now, messy productions and overworking animators are the norm for them these days
maewemeetagain2026-01-23 15:33
Shaft itself isn't 100% of the problem. Aniplex as a producer is quite demanding of their studios that push out big titles. A-1 and CloverWorks have both been through the wringer too.
zairaner2026-01-23 10:31
SHAFT, even at its peak, often had the approach of "fixing it in the blue-ray", having the original release of the episodes be partially unfished/unpolished.
Now they probably know they can't do this for this movie because the expectations are too high (or any of their movies, see kizumonogatari delays), so we are getting delays instead.
n080dy1232026-01-23 14:15
The main cause is that Shaft is a production shitshow and I don't think they've released a product in the last 10 years that hasn't had at least one delay before premiere or during airing.
They released episodes of Magia Record actually unfinished 2 or 3 times, one of which involved some streaming sites getting a version with a scene that was honest to god not fully colored, and one of which had stills over action that was occurring, with audio, but the animation was unfinished. And they outsourced at least one if not two entire episodes of RWBY Ice Queendom to an external studio.
noxnoctum2026-01-23 05:27

Quiddity1312026-01-23 05:43
It's quite disappointing that it's being delayed and I hope that it doesn't get pushed out of 2026.
But I am expecting amazing visuals for this, the last movie was among the most visually impressive anime movies I've ever seen. If I have to wait a few more months to get that, it's not the end of the world.
BiggieCheeseLapDog2026-01-23 05:49
I think it’s basically unquestionable that this film will be one of the most visually gorgeous anime films ever made. The trailer alone is absurdly beautiful and it seems Shaft is operating at their highest level.
ASHill112026-01-23 06:00

Since they're telling us more about the release date in February, that means a March release date can probably be ruled out as well. Maybe the first half of April too. If I were to guess, at the earliest the film comes out in late April, just before Golden Week. Don't know how competitive that period is for movie releases in Japan though.
8andahalfby112026-01-23 07:12
Madoka has a stage at AnimeJapan at the end of March IIRC. We'll probably have a new date then.

Reefer4life2026-01-23 19:14
Yeah they’re putting themselves in a corner here because with every delay, we are expecting more in terms of production. Which essentially means some people won’t be happy with ANYTHING that is put out now because the delays keep killing the actual hype and people are going to find the flaws instead. I am losing hope myself, like someone else said I’m no longer going to let myself get excited until it’s actually released now. This shit is too painful. I legitimately have gotten through the hardest year of my life by saying “well at least Madoka comes back in February”.
Sigh… pass me the copium please.
TnAdct12026-01-23 18:50
Considering what happened with Studio SHAFT fifteen years ago (especially if Madoka is partially to blame for for the incident), I wouldn't be surprised if the delays are a result of not having the same mistake be repeated.

It can’t be at this point I don’t think. They’ve built too much hype and have had ZERO follow through in 13 years. A good deal of fans are going to be frustrated even when it does come out especially considering it’s a “new beginning” meaning this isn’t even close to the end.
