Thank you I’ve never heard of it I’ll watch it 🔥

SmurfRockRune2026-01-23 07:56

I've seen it in comments here so I'm not sure it fits your criteria.

Budget-Shelter-17372026-01-23 07:57

I just want underground anime I’ve seen this suggested like once before so I’m willing to give it a chance

Inside-Battle-4482026-01-23 07:47

Grimgar was alright. Dark but not especially so. Not a power fantasy either.

Affectionate-Can-2312026-01-23 07:48

🤣 Case Study of Vanitas, Boogiepop and Others, and if you really wanna go underground The Witch and The Beast.

Furfys2026-01-23 07:57

Did you actually enjoy Boogiepop? I think it had one of the best anime trailers of all time, just for the actual show to be nothing like it.

Affectionate-Can-2312026-01-23 07:59

Interesting. I never watched the trailer I actually love the show though! I’ve never been a big trailer or teaser guy.

0rangy2026-01-23 07:50

Guin Saga - remember really enjoying this one back in the before time

Dull_Spot_82132026-01-23 07:50

Try [Manie Manie: Neo Tokyo](https://anilist.co/anime/1951).

RazorCalahan2026-01-23 07:57

oh yeah absolutely this! Can't believe I forgot about it

BeanyIsDaBean2026-01-23 07:52

Hoshi ai no sora, sarazanmai, those snow white notes, ya boy kongming, smile down the runway, robihachi, wistoria wand and swird

RazorCalahan2026-01-23 07:53

idk, maybe Vampire Hunter D?
Blood+ if a modern setting is cool with you. Only weakness is it could have told the same story in half the amount of episodes.
I guess Claymore but I bet you've seen this one already, it would be the first that comes to mind when I think "Dark Fantasy".
Oh yeah, obligatory Jojo recommendation. Jojo is many things, Dark Fantasy is one of them.

ReadySource32422026-01-23 07:53

Dragon Drive. It's got cool dragons, is one of the first japanese isekai, and it's pretty hype

badkneesgoodjoints2026-01-23 07:54

i never see N0.6 mentioned. i feel like im the only one who’s ever seen it.

You need to watch Redo of Healer. It is literally the holy grail of what you're looking for.

Shadow Skill, Itachi from naruto was HEAVILY based on one of its characters Diaz who is a ninja going blind from an unknown disease who is the the master of the mc's master who theme is ravens and when he uses his signature attack feathers fall from the sky lmao

10/10 anime, ova is butt hole tho

Aizeno682026-01-23 08:00

Immortal Guild and Ishuzoku reviewers are top notch comedy anime, which have no recognition. And pretty cultured too.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-23 08:01

Guin Saga (inspired Berserk, a strong sword and sorcery turned epic fantasy series and music by Nu)

Vampire Hunter D (it has 2 movies based on different novels, the 80s one is whatever, but the 2001 movie is one of the best looking anime of all time)

Seirei no Moribito (one of the GOAT fantasy series, not dark and not light either)

Shin Angyo Onshi (now the manhwa is literally just Korean Berserk but finished, but the anime film covers two early arcs (with some changes to the second one since the original references the main plot the movie doesn't touch on) before it really gets amazing that are still pretty enjoyable)

Gungrave (skip episode 1, basically Mafia Berserk and somehow amazing despite being based on a game)

Infinite Ryvius

GrandfatherTheSauce2026-01-23 08:06

Here's a few I don't see often, probably due to being older. Bear in mind they aren't necessarily fantasy but they can get pretty dark.

Dixenz2026-01-23 08:13

Rokka no Yuusha

6 heroes are chosen to seal the demon king, but somehow 7 showed up. 1 of them is an impostor.

WakaliwoodMan2026-01-23 08:16

This is a pretty tough ask since dark fantasy is already a very specific niche, so the ones you haven't heard of are gonna be almost all isekai slop, since that's a high volume genre.

Anyways, maybe Dororo? The beginning and end of the series are peak (though the middle is a goddamn wreck for most of it)

Prestigious_Flow_3642026-01-23 08:18

I liked Psycho pass, it's not dark fantasy but still

Space Battleship Yamato 2199(greatest remake of all time). The franchise in general is Evangelion and Gainax’s biggest influence. Even Hideaki Anno admits that Evangelion and Gainax/Trigger/Khara wouldn’t existed if it wasn’t for Space Battleship Yamato.
