Recommend a 33 year old married father a grownup anime
I used to like a couple of anime shows as a teenager. I remember enjoying Cowboy Bebop (I mainly recall the superb soundtrack), and I also remember enjoying the strange narrative of Haruhi Suzumiya. I’d really like to revisit anime as an adult, but I’m unsure where to start and was hoping you fine people would recommend me some.
As the title of the post says, I’m a 33 year old married father, so looking for something grownup. Not really wanting anything childish, overly pornographic, or an action-fest. I won’t disregard any recommendations that contain these things, but it will need to be expressive, interesting, or experimental in some capacity for it to hold my attention. If it helps, in terms of cinema I’m in to art film and independent films.

Also Sonny Boy.
Yeah start with Sonny Boy.
* Samurai Champloo
* Space Dandy
* Carole and Tuesday
* Kids on the Slope
Other shows you could try:
* Michiko and Hatchin
* Vinland Saga
* Black Lagoon
* Baccano
Yup, it's the legendary Yoko Kanno.
Space Dandy is the only one on I wouldn't recommend. Some people seem to like it, I hated it and dropped after 3 episodes, YMMV.
I’d say Kemonozume or Texhnolyze
A through and through grownup story about a japanese Doctor on his redemtion arc within europe especially germany to fix a mistake? of the past. A little bit slow paced but it greatly develops the atmosphere and flashes out some minor characters. A 9/10 for me personally. I am a 35 year old guy and also fed up with these „generic/slop“ animes.
Kind regards
Vampire hunter d bloodlust, (one of the best anime movies imo)
Apothecary diaries
Frieren: the story of what happens in the years after the hero's party defeats the demon lord, told through the eyes of an ageless elf. It's equal parts melancholy, bittersweet, action, humorous. It does some interesting things with shot composition. The second season just started airing too.
Violet Evergarden
I also recommend Code Geass if you like war or Mecha anime or both
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Code Geass
Banana fish
Monster
Ping pong the animation
Golden Kamuy
Frieren
Terror in resonance
(Bebop and Haruhi were two shows I loved as a teen too)
Death Note
Vinland Saga

Neon Genesis: Evangelion
Weird, in the best of ways and a truly unique and interesting story and characters.
Millenium Actress
Perfect Blue
Paprika
Monster
Pluto
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Blue eye samurai
Devilman crybaby
The tatami galaxy

This One is not an anime but is an animated series that i hardly recommend:

2.) Monster - Superb soundtrack. Superb story. Can feel a little slow-paced at times but a phenomenal story with great writing.
3.) From the New World - Very underrated. Very surrealist. Psychological horror. Makes you question a lot of things.
4.) Vinland Saga - Season 1 is an action-fest but that is for a reason. Season 2 is much more grounded. Refreshing setting for an anime.
5.) Psycho Pass - Also somewhat action-heavy but if you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop, you'll also enjoy this. Very stylish and mature characters.
6.) Orb: On the Movements of the Earth - Phenomenal story and direction. Very underrated but critically acclaimed.
7.) Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Deserves its popularity. Mature characters and talks about the passage of time in a high-fantasy world. Great storytelling.
8.) The Apothecary Diaries - Talks about a lot of mature concepts and has a comparatively unique setting for anime - imperial China. Can feel a little slow-paced at times but has very interesting mysteries.
9.) Serial Experiments Lain - A classic old series that is one of the kings of surrealist anime. You'll probably never fully understand the storyline and I don't think you're meant to.
10.) Ergo Proxy - Cyberpunk. Stylish. Mature characters. If you liked Cowboy Bebop, you'll probably like this.
11.) Perfect Blue - Movie. Like AOT, one of the best pieces of fiction ever created. Must-watch.
They're both a bit more mature than the standard anime, and the meat of the shows are in the dialogues rather than the action. Tho season 1 of Vinland Saga still has a fair bit of action. It's set in medieval Europe after all so expect a bit of war.
* Kaiba
* Katanagatari
* Puella Magi Madoka Magika
* Planetes
* Bakemonogatari (big caveat content-wise tho & may be a good idea to watch when nobody else is around, but sure is expressive & interesting, )
Castlevania
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
I am 37 and watch a ton of anime
some standouts I have seen over the years that are more mature, thought provoking series would be
Attack on Titan (political intrigue, mystery, cool action, thriller)
Vinland Saga (first season is more "anime" action than the second, arguably better written season, but is required watching for the overall story)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (older series, came out around the same time as Bebop. ) Psychological, mature themes, mystery)
Sousou no Freiren (this is a mature, slower paced show that is beautifully animated and about human connection but also has wizards and magic)
Moribito (political and supernatural, a prince is "cursed" and a wandering warrior woman protects him as a bodyguard)
Psycho Pass (psychological thriller, think Minority Report)
Heres some of my recs
Vinland Saga, Kaiju no 8, Delicious in Dungeon , Buddy Daddies, Call of the Night , Death Parade, Frieren, Apothecary Diaries, K, March comes in like a Lion, New Game!, The Great Pretender, Plastic Memories, Recovery of an MMO Junkie, Sweetness and Lightning, The Perfect Insider, To Your Eternity
Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, Garden of Words, Paprika. Tokyo Godfathers, Wolf Children, Your name
A bit of a mix of adult protagonists, some have more of an emotional story and feel different when watching now as an adult vs a teen. Some mystery and some that are artistically pretty.
Wanted to give a good mixed bag of shows and some movies!
Hope this helps :)
I'm also 33 yo married papa but I enjoyed DanDaDan so much I think you should give it a try.
Attack on Titan is pretty serious overall,as is Berserk but they're quite graphic.
Vinland saga is a Great pseudo historical tale with adult themes.
Most of these you should find on Netflix
I also recommend Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, a gripping story about the clash between the church's recognized geocentrism and the scientific exploration of heliocentrism in 14th century Poland.
Saga of Tanya the Evil. Excellent visuals and sound design. Both dub and sub are amazing. If you like military action with thought put into semi-realistic tactics and strategy with a good smattering of alternative magical history from the other side, you’ll like this one. Give this one 2-3 episodes.
Frieren: beyond the journey’s end. Definitely a great one for someone around our ages and older. It’s a slower pace but in the best way possible. There’s action in it, especially later but it’s not heart pounding action all the time. You will be hooked by the first episode but the first 4 were all released together, so it is recommended that you watch all 4 together if you can. If not, just the first two will be more than enough to hook you.
Gankutsuou: the Count of Monte Cristo- this one is a very unique and imaginative adaptation of the classic revenge story that somehow manages to stay surprisingly true to the original. The visuals have some very obvious experimental artistic choices that I think would interest you.
Netflix’s Castlevania- based on a video game franchise from the 80s and 90s, this is mature as hell without being bleak and grimdark. Not for fanservice (of which there is very little), but for discussions of religion, power,duty legacy,morality, and evil in the world… it’s way deeper and more satisfying than I had ever expected when I went into it. When the story starts and sets itself up, Dracula is hellbent on destroying the whole world… and you are on his side. It’s western made so some may say it’s not anime… but it’s still totally anime. Watch it in English, it’s og language.
Speaking of not being anime while still totally being anime- Avatar the Last Airbender- it starts out innocent and child friendly but… tackles a whole shit ton of things in adult/mature, but still very family friendly ways. It would be an excellent one to watch with your kid(s). I tried to rewatch it from the beginning a while back and the super kid friendly stuff at the start was more annoying than I had remembered but it builds up. If you want a quick snapshot of if you are going to like the show or not, look up on YouTube “tales of ba sing se, Iroh’s story”. It’s an excellent example of how deceptively deep and compelling the story is. Watch it in English, the show’s og language.
Princess Mononoke- another Ghibli film, it’s kind of a wild, mythical sounding story of classic conflict- nature va industrialization, and other things. But it’s clear early on that everything that is going on is in a gray area with fault and ignorance to around as we cheer on the leaders of both sides. The main character is cursed in a sort of collateral damage incident, forcing him to investigate and intervene in order to save his own life. All the opposing and complimentary themes will pique your interest along with the great storytelling and visuals. When it was dubbed into English, they pulled together a completely star studded cast to do the voice overs. Seriously, look up the voice actor credits. Dub or sub, both are fantastic.
And speaking of not being anime… or being animated at all… you have to watch Godzilla Minus One. Unlike most of the other Godzilla movies that are out there, this one is serious and focuses on an amazing, human focused story. The human characters and relationships are set up so well that you actually fear Godzilla and his destructive potential as he draws ever closer. You want them to live (unlike in Legendary’s KotM movie). Without giving too much away, I hope, it deals with survivor’s guilt and found family (among other things) in Japan just after WW2 ends and soldiers come home to rebuild their broken country. Crying during a Godzilla movie was not on any of the bingo cards I could have ever imagined.

I think you'll love it, it's very contemplative, without internal dialogues and contains manipulation of reality
and Bunny Girl Senpai
The title is a big bait, it has the theme of Haruhi Suzumiya and it's not lewd at all, in fact it's quite serious (watch the first 3 episodes, it has the quality of a complete film!)
