Super good. We will definitely get a 3rd season. Makes me happy.
Whatah2026-01-23 16:33
The big problem is that they are getting close to catching up with the source material, and the manga is on indefinite hiatus.
tripleaamin2026-01-23 16:42
I highly expect them to space out releases. More than likely, every 2 years, put out content.
S3 in Winter 2028, Movie in 2030.
By then we can only hope the current arc in the manga is done by 2032. Then again, with hiatuses with manga, you never truly know.
ali941272026-01-23 18:03
I'd really rather that arc not be a movie. Chapters 105-123 or 105-125 (this kind of leads into the current arc, so probably not a great stopping point) could be another 1 cour 10 episode season. At minimum, 19 chapters to adapt compared to season 2's presumed 20. In theory, could be combined with the current arc to be a 2 cour anime (maybe split cour to give more time), but that really depends on how long the current arc ends up being and if the manga can return to a more regular schedule.
tripleaamin2026-01-23 18:22
105-119 is basically one self-contained arc. While stuff like S2 and the first half of S1 have more self-contained episodes, which works better in TV format.
Plus, the staff is clearly flexible with the episode count given both S1 and S2. So I am pretty sure they will adjust it depending on how long the current arc in the manga lasts.
ali941272026-01-23 18:54
I have two primary reasons I think it makes a bad movie experience.
1. The arc is still pretty episodic. I don't think you quite get the same singular story experience you do with something like Demon Slayer or Reze Arc. [Manga spoilers]>!They do quite a lot of detouring before they have the final battle to send Frieren Back to the Future.!< 105 and 106 don't really have much to do with the arc, though could be made to be the finale of season 3, but I think that's a pretty weak ending. 110-116 are relatively episodic. 119 also ends in a pretty episodic manner that's not really a movie finale. It's just not the singular story experience that I think is needed for a good movie.
2. The arc is pretty long for a movie. At minimum, it's 107-119 if 105 and 106 are part of season 3, so 13 chapters. Even assuming season 1's slightly faster pacing of 60 chapters in 28 episodes, that's over a 2 hour movie, which is already considered a long anime movie. For reference, any animated movie at least 2 hours is already on Wikipedia's list of longest animated movies. Unlikely, but not impossible. If they include 105 and 106, that's almost a 2.5 hour movie. And that also doesn't really include any room for expansion that a movie deserves.
I'm sure the staff has a better idea, but it's hard as the audience to thus predict how it will be adapted because we have no idea how long the current arc is going to be. Doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon, but hard to tell. If it ended soon, from chapter 120 would make for a good one cour season, but seems it could be much longer. It's getting to the length where it could be it's own season. The staff is flexible with episode counts, but something like 18 episodes would be incredibly unusual and beyond just being flexible. Besides, I'm imagine 1 cour seasons to be the standard moving forward.
AshfordThunder2026-01-23 16:46
They have materials for at least a 2-cour season and a shorter season. So that's like at least 5 years away from running out of materials.
ali941272026-01-23 17:00
They will likely reach chapter 80 out of 147 this season. Season one adapted 60 chapters. Season 3 will likely be one cour as well and cover up to 104 (more likely imo) or 106 in two years, so still a lot of material to burn through. If the mangakas could output approximately at least 25 chapters every 2 years at minimum, we would be ok. I would hope that the major hiatus change would be for them to move to a standard biweekly schedule as Frieren is technically weekly, but has been functionally biweekly for years.
nemt2026-01-23 17:25
is it doing hunter x hunter?
madjoki2026-01-23 16:28
Not Japan as whole, as ANN posts Kanto area ratings.
ball_throwerAFK2026-01-23 16:56
It can technically be extrapolated though
NoPriorThreat2026-01-24 01:41
from one datapoint?
fleetingflight2026-01-24 09:45
The Kanto area is a lot of people...
Ebo872026-01-23 17:08
Kanto numbers are the first ones available, later on we get all of Japan but that takes another week.
elmagio2026-01-23 18:03
We also get Live+7 numbers eventually, so the total rating for the first week, will be interesting to see if Frieren also matches season 1's 10% average there.
elmagio2026-01-23 16:25
It's very good. Frieren is basically the only show besides Demon Slayer (which does even better) that pulls these sort of numbers consistently in the night time slots.
No_Name0_02026-01-23 16:49
I wanna see what number the Demon Slayer movie will do this time. Mugen train made history in broadcasting last time
heroeNK252026-01-23 16:49
Okey that's huge
Butane90002026-01-23 17:28
It's a phenomenal story and I can't wait for some of the arcs this season. So we know if it's 12 episodes or will it be 24 like the previous? Because they covered quite a bit in season 1.
Redblood_Moon2026-01-23 17:30
Season 2 will only have 10 episodes, unfortunately
TheWereHare2026-01-24 02:43
Do they have literally anything left content wise after the 10 eps? I saw that number and just assumed that’s the end until further notice.
DryBonesKing2026-01-24 04:22
There's enough content for probably another batch of 24-ish episodes, so either two one-cour seasons or another two-cour season. I think the anime is trying to give the author time to get back from hiatus by spreading out their content a bit. They can definitely do more content though, especially cause the arc proceeding this season is heavily anticipated by manga readers
UndulyPensive2026-01-24 04:24
With this 10-episode season, it's increasingly likely that they will adapt the next arc in 14-16 episodes and then the arc following that as a movie.
azawizi2026-01-23 16:45
I
Mitsuyan_2026-01-23 16:49
Magilumiere in that slot was about 2.5% and Apothecary Diaries 3.5% for comparison. Today's episode will be the big test
Gregariouswaty2026-01-23 18:23
Is Magilumiere doing well? Did not hear anything about the anime adaptation.
Mitsuyan_2026-01-23 18:26
I only know of the anime and yes it was in the same time slot and did very well
Iloveahrisears2026-01-23 19:42
It's getting a second season so, yes.
Atermel2026-01-24 04:18
That show is so underrated in the West. Personally I really enjoyed it.
Shahars712026-01-24 14:59
Magilumiere is super underrated, I'm glad it's doing well.

Reminder that Frieren is a monster in Japan in terms of popularity. Its broadcast time is like at the perfect time.
ali941272026-01-23 16:54
11pm on a Friday night on a major tv channel in an anime block right after Conan is pretty perfect.
Mitsuyan_2026-01-23 17:48
It was made *for* Frieren but other anime have enjoyed great success in that slot. Especially great if you're a Magilumiere fan!
robobloz072026-01-23 18:00
apothecary diaries s2 also used the slot with great success

Damn only 4.7%? Japan ain’t really rocking with Frieren smh. Their loss.
Noobu_assassin2026-01-23 16:46
4.7 is amazing lol
Tagoony2026-01-23 16:47
Frieren deserves 100%
ball_throwerAFK2026-01-23 16:55
4.7% can be extrapolated to the entire population of Japan.
5 million live viewers is insane.
Hephaestus_God2026-01-23 17:03
Oh… so it’s 4.7% view count not rating?
Because title said rating an no matter what the scale is being rated only 4.7% out of it is kind of small. So I was also confused
Lucksury2026-01-23 17:06
We are so far removed from television that kids don’t understand what tv ratings are anymore.
Hephaestus_God2026-01-23 17:12
I’m 35 lol, I just don’t watch tv and haven’t since like highschool so the wording doesn’t make sense to me.
uzldropped2026-01-23 17:26
Is anyone going to explain why a ~5% rating = good then???
elmagio2026-01-23 17:38
It means that 4.7% of all households in Kanto (Tokyo etc) were watching Frieren live when it aired at 11pm. That's about as good as it gets for seasonal anime that air around that time.
ball_throwerAFK2026-01-23 17:39
5% of Japanese people watched Frieren pretty much
DragoSphere2026-01-23 20:02
Higher than 5%. The rating is for *households*, which contain at least 1 person. Additionally it doesn't account for streaming, and is just the amount of people there watching when it aired live on TV
Lucksury2026-01-23 17:54
Viewership rating is how much of the population watched the show as it’s airing. As the person above mentioned, 4.7% means 5 million people was watching it concurrently. I forget if they count by household or TV or individual people but 5 million people watching is a lot.
Bakatora342026-01-23 17:40
TV rating basically means view count, that why for context they put tv first.
It fit the definition of rating because they still ranking **the performance** of the show in terms of views.
M4DM1ND2026-01-23 18:43
"Ratings" in the context of TV essentially means view count.
guesswhomste2026-01-23 16:53
There is nowhere that is “rocking with Frieren” more than Japan
AshfordThunder2026-01-23 16:48
Sazae-San and Detective Conan still pulling in numbers like that? Damn, are these like the equivalent of the Simpsons in Japan?
elmagio2026-01-23 16:58
Pretty much, yeah. There's also a "phenomenon" that whatever airs before Conan tends to have great numbers, nicknamed the "Detective Conan waiting room".
Phyzm12026-01-23 16:55
Still havnt started, letting some episodes build up.
fcknglzrbms2026-01-23 17:00
I watched the first episode, solely because I couldn’t wait. After watching the first episode, I’m going to wait until the entire season is out. If the rest of the season is just as good or better than the first episode, season 2 is going to BANG.
Just my two cents though.
Phyzm12026-01-23 20:29

dapdubpib2026-01-24 14:28

Yep, waiting for the whole season to finish and the dub. The English dub is actually fantastic for Frieren

Honestly, the first episode is just a warmup and kind of a "welcome back". I dont think you'd spoil yourself too much if you give in. No big cliff hangers.

I've never watched but I'm assuming it's episodic
Iron_Kingpin2026-01-23 17:14
Why is Doraemon lower though
Mitsuyan_2026-01-23 17:50
Some shows have competition or just bad timeslots. To get on this chart is ridiculous in itself.
Iron_Kingpin2026-01-23 17:55
But it's Doraemon though, it's like one of if not the cultural icon of Japan.
Old-Huckleberry96132026-01-23 17:31
Waiting for the English dub for sure
Ok_Chap2026-01-23 17:34
I totally misread the 4.7% and thought it had a bad rating score not as tv broadcasting rating share.
rumblevn2026-01-23 18:28
Is that 4.7% mean 4.7% population of Japan?
Ok_Chap2026-01-23 18:36
Idk.
obviouslypineapple2026-01-23 18:40
From the article, at the bottom it says:

So, not quite, but it might be a representative sample

desterion2026-01-23 20:54
I never thought I would see the smurfs on a most watched TV list in 2026 but here we are
TheHeftyChef2026-01-23 23:03
does that mean like 1 in 20 people in japan is watching that show?
elmagio2026-01-23 23:12
1 in 20 households in Kanto. Some households have more people than others, some may have 4 or 5 people but only one is watching, ... and the numbers may not be exactly the same if extended to the entire country. But generally speaking, a lot of people are tuning in.
Additionally, when Frieren S1 was airing, its first week numbers (so live + recordings for the next 7 days) were 10%, so 1 in 10 households. And lastly, this doesn't include streaming either, just TV.
Superb-Ad57712026-01-23 23:17
Why is Blue Miburo on this list?
elmagio2026-01-23 23:26
Detective Conan waiting room. You could probably have a video of paint drying before Conan and it'd do decent numbers.
Time_Fracture2026-01-24 03:08
Safe to say Ascendance of the Bookworm will also have a decent viewership number.
It will take over Blue Miburo timeslot next season.
FitEar19242026-01-23 23:26
I was trying to find one for jjk? Does anyone know where?
LegendaryZXT2026-01-24 01:04

What is so great about this show? Honestly never watched it bc nothing about it seems particularly special. Kinda seems like people are just obsessed with the elf chick. Anyone care to explain what makes this anime so great?
caxno2026-01-25 01:37
maybe you should just give it a watch? it's a really nice wholesome story with great animation. even just the soundtrack is amazing
toph_man2026-01-26 15:46
I gave it 4 episodes I don’t think it’s for me but I tried at least.
Malrottian2026-01-25 01:48
I can't speak for everyone else but for me the thing that sets it apart is a slower, more deliberate pace and a very melancholy focus on memories and loss. Frieren has a lifespan of thousands of years and the decade she spent before the show begins with the Hero's Party defeating the Demon King was her equivalent of a long weekend. She's spent centuries just floating along and that incredibly short time for her changed how she views her relationship with those around her.
I'd recommend watching the first two episodes together. If it doesn't grab you, no harm and no foul, but as an older anime viewer this show speaks quite powerfully to me and I hope you'll like it.
toph_man2026-01-26 15:45
I gave it a shot but I don’t think it’s for me. It doesn’t seem bad but seems slow and predictable to me. I made it about 4 episodes in.
Malrottian2026-01-26 16:44
Props for you for giving it a go and I can certainly understand how it might not be everyone's thing.
toph_man2026-01-26 16:49
I will say it had good animation and soundtrack and I might come back to try and finish it someday but I don’t think I can binge watch it rn. Thanks for being kind about it though.
