I’m looking for romcoms similar to Nagatoro and My Dress Up Darling, especially with a teasing female lead and gradual couple development. Preferably something already completed.

The Dangers in My Heart. Not really the teasing type, but it's very cute.
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 21:53
This one's been on my list for a while, can you tell me a little about its history?
TheBusStop122026-01-23 22:11
Jumping in as I love the Dangers in my heart. In general I love Romance anime that have something else going on besides just purely highschool romance. Like Dress Up Darling has the cosplay, and Kaguya-sama has the over the top humor and the "war".
But Dangers in my heart is just purely a highschool (or I think actually middle school in this case) romance story with no real bells and whistles to speak of. The standard weird awkward loner and the hottest girl in class fall in love. But it executes it so damn well that despite that it's genuinely one of my all time favorites. It's just told so damn well.
The first 3 episodes can be a bit rough tho, the MC has some issues that can make him really cringy to the point of it being painful, but he gets past that afterwards.
Especially season 2 is just so good
Dolomite8082026-01-24 00:32
> But Dangers in my heart is just purely a highschool (or I think actually middle school in this case) romance story with no real bells and whistles to speak of.
I think it's as much a coming-of-age story as it is a romance. It's also my number 1 favorite romance as well.
TheBusStop122026-01-24 01:49
That's true, tho I'm generally not really that interested in coming of age stories by themselves either without something more interesting to them. So for me to really enjoy a school romance + coming of age story that doesn't really have anything else going for it, it means that this is genuinely well executed in my eyes. And that makes me love it all the more. T
Dolomite8082026-01-24 02:59
I couldn't agree more.
Also if you're haven't seen it, Tsuki Ga Kirei is an excellent coming-of-age romance, and its a complete story in 12 episodes (make sure you watch the after credits scene on the last episode).
As a big fan of Dangers as well, I think you might like it.
No-Possibility99082026-01-24 03:05
I tried watching Tsukigakirei but I found the animation very strange. It might be me being picky (it probably is), but I can't get into an anime if I don't like the animation. The same thing happened with Lovely Complex; I thought the art style was awful and I didn't even start watching it, lol.
Dolomite8082026-01-24 16:46
>The same thing happened with Lovely Complex;
Thank God! I thought I was the only one. I keep telling myself I'll get back to it since it's comes so highly recommended, but the style turned me off a bit as well.
No-Possibility99082026-01-24 17:06
Not that I find the art style exactly ugly, but it's strange, very different from what I usually consume, and that's why I didn't like it.
I'll give the work a chance soon because it seems to be very good; one of my favorite dynamics in romance is enemy to lovers.
No_Cockroach24672026-01-23 22:12
It starts with a middle school loner fantasizing about killing a popular girl, but he's just a chuuni edgelord who can't handle having a crush on an "unobtainable" girl. But she ends up being less out of reach than he thought, and spending time together slowly draws him out of his self-loathing funk and helps him grow into a healthier person.
TheBusStop122026-01-23 21:30
Uzaki-chan wants to hang out (if you liked the teasing of Nagatoro)
Pseudo harem (not actually a harem. Less teasing, more playing along. The female MC is a skilled actress doing impressions of harem trope characters for the male MC. A completed story)
Kaguya sama Love is War (not necessarily teasing, more that they're trying to one up eachother. Just about completed)
Alya sometimes hides her feelings in Russian (as per the title, she only flirts with him in Russian. They tease one another a lot)
I have a crush at work
Horimiya (completed)
You and I are Polar Opposites (currently airing, only 3 episodes so far, but it's really good)
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 21:50
started Uzaki-chan when the anime first aired but dropped it back then. I liked it a lot though, so I’m thinking about rewatching it. Did it ever get another season?
Kaguya-sama is one of my absolute favorites. I’ve read the manga and rewatched the anime multiple times, easily top 5 for me. I’m really hyped for the movie.
I literally just finished Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian yesterday lol. I enjoyed it a lot too, and it really needs a second season.
I’ll check out Pseudo Harem. I’ve seen a lot of good things about it but never watched it before.
TheBusStop122026-01-23 22:06
Uzaki-chan has 2 seasons, but I'm unsure if it'll ever get a third. The bane of my romance anime loving existence, unresolved stories
That's why I love pseudo harem so much. It's a small single season self contained story that actually dares to do what most romance anime (and manga/LN) don't, show a romance set over the course of several years where they actually get somewhere (thank god!) and has an actually satisfying ending (that doesn't amount to them getting engaged already in highschool, one of my personal pet peeves)
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 22:11
I follow the same line of thinking as you, I also hate excessively drawn-out plots without resolution, even though I like the couple to get together as soon as possible haha.
I'll put pseudo harem on my list, I'll probably watch it after Uzaki-Chamo or Angel Next Door, I've been meaning to watch this one for ages and never get around to it.
TheBusStop122026-01-23 22:12
Angel next door is good as well, looking forward to season 2
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 22:14
Have you watched My Love Story with Yamada-kun? I see many people raving about it, and I didn't even know about this anime. The premise intrigued me, and I wanted to know if it's really worth watching.
TheBusStop122026-01-23 22:19
Another one I recommend a lot (only reason I didn't now was because I was focused on the teasing aspects and the dynamic between male and female lead of Nagatoro and Dress up darling, Yamada kun has a different Dynamic) It's in my top 10
makookies2026-01-23 21:31
Teasing Master Takagi-san seems right up your alley!
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 21:51
One of my favorites. I watched it during the pandemic and it gives me a really nice sense of nostalgia. It’s a shame that in my country I can’t find any seasons beyond the first one.
rep3t32026-01-23 21:51
Kaguya sama Love is War
At first I didnt think it was for me it seemed to formulaic but something clicks like halfway through season 1 and became one of my all time favorite animes. Currently its third season is ranked #16 all time on MAL so a lot of other people agree
Its by far the hardest I have laughed for any anime and it handles romance incredible well.
Plus if you get into it now you will be caught up before the Epilogue Movie Comes out
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 21:54
I love this one, it’ll always be in my top 5. Do you know when the movie comes out?
rep3t32026-01-23 21:59
No date yet, you should have mentioned it in the description lol lots of others will recommend it.
Maybe try *Fruits basket* (the remake not the old one)
One of my other favorite slice of life (No romance) but it will make you cry like a baby is *A Place Further than the Universe*
No-Possibility99082026-01-23 22:03
Well, yeah, lol. Basically, all the recommendations so far have been for anime I've already watched.
I'll put this one on my list.
I was thinking about watching The Angel Next Door; I saw someone talking very highly of it and I got curious about it.
DaoEmperorFather2026-01-23 22:18
Nana
tomtepdau2026-01-23 22:22
apothecary diaries - Smart female lead with gradual couple developement. I am not sure if teasing is the central dynamic in their relationship, but there is some. The story is well written and highly rated!
mihizawi2026-01-24 02:18
I have a full list of romance animes I've watched (with my own scores and descriptions), if you want me to share it with you, let me know.
But for starters, teasing female lead, the first thing that comes to mind is the master herself, Takagi-san, but I have noticed you already have watched it.
Other than that, a few that have milder examples of teasing could be:
\- Alya sometimes hides her feelings in Russian (but it's not completed and you've already watched it)
\- Kimagure Orange Road (a 80's anime romcom about a love triangle... neither girl is particularly known for teasing on the level of Takagi or even Marin, but both have their more playful moments, and Madoka Ayukawa, the main girl is one of the first tsundere love interests in anime, and when she is up to it she has some amazing playful teasing moments)
\- The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten (this is pure diabetes... we will have a second season soon, but the first season has a very satisfying ending... and Mahiru, the main girl, in the second half of the season starts to act very forward and pushy, in a way that could be seen as teasing)
Now, if you don't mind something ridiculously ecchi, Please put them on Takamine-san definately fits the bill for a female lead that is very teasing, at the start to the point of cruelty.
No-Possibility99082026-01-24 02:27
I'd love for you to send me the list, I'll probably watch Angel Next Door and then My Love Story with Yamada-kun.
mihizawi2026-01-24 02:48
All the romance anime, or with important romance subplots, I have watched so far, roughly in order from most to least favorite (part 1):
Cardcaptor Sakura (10/10) - Not a pure romance, but one of the cutest love stories ever, by the end the main romance is arguebly even more important than the other plot. The main romance takes its time to develop though.
Kimagure Orange Road (10/10) - A classic 80's romcom about a love triangle, and it has one of the earliest (and in my opinion greatest and most nuanced) tsundere love interests in anime.
Your Lie in April (10/10) - a very tragic but extremely beautiful love story between two teenage musicians. Will make you cry.
The Apothecary Diaries (10/10) - the romance is not the main focus for most of the anime, but in the moments it gets the spotlight, it's great and the whole series is so peak, with mystery, political intreague and historically inspired fiction.
Princess Tutu (10/10) - a very unorthodox magical girl anime, with a ballet theme and a lot of meta-commentary on story telling. The feelings of romantic love are what drives the plot, but the actual romance, while it is still there, is not a big focus.
Madoka Magica (10/10) - a darker take on the magical girl genre. Just like in Princess Tutu, the romantic feelings are quite important to the plot, but there's almost 0 actual romance, so I am hesitating if I should include this one. Still, a truly great anime.
Teasing Master Takagi-san (9,5/10) - one of the most wholesome and cutest but at the same time funniest romcoms ever made. It is quite episodic, with a lot of episodes being divided into short stories, but most of the independent episodes are somewhat connected and there's a sense of progress and development despite the episodic nature of the show.
Clannad (9,5/10) - starts as a fairly typical high-school harem romance with some fantasy/paranormal elements, but by the sequel, After Story, the main couple gets together and we get to see the struggles and challenges of a young adult couple, and stuff happens that will make you cry.
Love, Chubibyo and other delusions (9/10) - A very cute and funny romcom with some drama in it. A high school student who wants to get over his middle-school obsession for acting-up like an action anime character, meets a classmate that is very much living fully in her own imaginary world. It's a great story about the push and pull between wanting to grow up, but not letting go of your child-like imagination, and the main couple's relationship is adorable.
Your Name (9/10): a great anime movie where the romance is central to the plot.
Steins; Gate (9/10): another in a similar place to Princess Tutu and Madoka Magica, it has a bit of romance, but mainly, the romantic feelings drive the plot forward.
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten (8,5/10) - together with Takagi-san, one of the most diabetic romances I've ever seen, but with less comedy, more of a pure romance, and I love it for that. And, while we are going to get a season 2 next year, this one reaches a very satifying conclusion in the 1st season with just 12 episodes.
Izetta: The Last Witch (8,5/10): a more military/political take on the magical girl genre where the yuri romance is somewhat important to the plot.
Fruits Basket: (8/10): a romance anime that may look like a reverse harem, but actually is more of a love triangle.
Ai Yori Aoshi (8/10) - a harem where the main couple gets together very early, but has to keep their relationship a secret, thus giving space for the harem situation to develop. If you want the trope of a perfect traditional japanese wife, I haven't come across a better example than the main girl in this anime, but she still has a fairly interesting and headstrong personality. The second season doesn't give us a satisfying conclusion, which is regrettable, but along the way there's still quite some progress with the main couple. In my opinion, there are many similarities to Love Hina in the way it handles the harem aspects, but I do prefer Ai Yori Aoshi, since it has a slightly more serious tone while still being a harem romcom.
mihizawi2026-01-24 02:53
Part 2:
Toradora (8/10): a story about a love polygon where two socially awkward people start to cooperate to help each other with their respective crushes only to develop feelings for each other. What this anime does really well is portraying how messy things can be when some relationships are just not meant to be (and some thhat are meant to be), while still not being overly caught up in drama and jealousy.
My Dress Up Darling (8/10): a slow-burn romance that has a lot of focus on cosplay culture and explores the inner struggles of side characters a lot.
Rose of Versailles (8/10): a historical drama with lots of courtly intrigue and several important romance subplots, most of which end tragically.
Revolutionary Girl Utena (8/10): a very surrealistic and symbolic anime with lots of messy romance subplots, a strange reverse harem not centered on the protagonist, and a yuri main romance.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian (7,5/10): a romcom with a pretty fun premise and a very genre-aware humor, and overt fan-service without being ecchi, it is almost a harem, but with a very clear main romance. It has two main plots, the romance and the school council election, and I personally felt like the first season, while getting some progress in both, it wasn't enough for a satisfying season. Hoping to get more from Season 2, since it was a very wild and entertaining watch.
My clueless first friend (7,5/10): a sweet and very innocent elemmentary school love story about a girl who is bullied because of her sinister looks and a boy who finds those looks cool and always manages to deflect the bullying with a positive spin.
Skip and Loafer (7,5/10): a tame but sweet slice of life with important romance. Not extremely exciting, but for a chill, relaxed watch, still a very nice romance.
Love Hina (7,5/10): a classic harem where the protagonist tries to find a childhood crush to fulfill a promise to go to university together.
Anohana (7,5/10): a short and somewhat tragic story about going through grief for a lost one. There's some romance aspect to it.
Inuyasha (7,5/10, provisional score, currently watching): a classical isekai battle-shonen, but with a very important romance subplot, including a sort of love triangle.
Fushigi Yuugi (7/10): an isekai adventure reverse harem anime with very prominent romance. The levels of teenage girl romance drama are very high, though, so you have to get into the right mindset to watch it without cringing, but still, a classic on its own right.
Mother of the Goddess Dormitory (7/10): Extreme amounts of ecchi fan service, and a very questionable age-gap (but with the male protagonist being the youngest). Still, if you are able to forget about the age gap, and enjoy the ecchi fan service, it is not a bad harem romance, the interactions between the characters are actually quite sweet.
Kaitou Saint Tail (6,5/10): a magical thief anime that has a lot of robin-hood esque themes, not so much stealing from the rich to give to the poor, but stealing to give it back to the rightful or moral owner. The romance plays a somewhat important part in the anime, but the problem I have with it is that it is too episodic, with very few exceptions, most episodes could be watched in a random order without it really being a problem.
School Days (6/10): one of the most hated romance animes ever, I think. And I get why: it is what would happen if protagonist who is a bad person with 0 redeeming qualities and no redemption arc got a harem of girls, who are, to varying degrees, bad people themselves. It is an uncomfortable watch, but because I believe that was the intention of the anime, I still give it some credit for achieving the goal of making the watcher uncomfortable.
On a separate note ecchi romances I've watched: Yosuga No Sora (7,5/10), High school DxD (7/10), Love Flops (7/10) Kiss x Sis (6,5/10), Please put them on, Takamine-san (5,5/10)
