Clannad probably. It's both happy and sad-beautiful. It's probably the only anime I've ever cried with.

That series is beautiful in so many ways. Art, animation, music, characters, storytelling, the whole nine yards. I'm especially a fan of the soundtrack. Evan Call's OSTs are always among the best.
PikaBooSquirrel2026-01-24 05:35
Don't bother with the movie tho. Completely undoes all of the character development and basically pulls an Usagi Drop

As someone who has been watching Anime since the early 2000s it is hands down Frieren. The attention to animation detail in every scene, the sweeping soundtrack, the romances both blossoming and unfulfilled, the melancholic story and some of the best characters I've ever seen in the (according to MAL) 800+ Anime I've seen.
For a smaller title that aired a few years ago, Land of the Lustrous. To me it is the standard for CGI in anime and is absolutely gorgeous to watch. Also a very unique story with great character development and insane action scenes that I think could only ever be captured in an animated medium.
CompetitiveLook75272026-01-24 01:47
Wow frieren really?? I watched it but it didn’t catch me like that.
Eclipse_lol1232026-01-24 02:07
Same you’re not alone, fkn bored me to sleep and I watched every single episode released (so far) and it never got better.
CompetitiveLook75272026-01-24 02:10
Im watching it right now and im just neutral the whole time the only time i was like ok that’s nice was the major fight scene but that was it.😂
Eclipse_lol1232026-01-24 02:13
Yeah the one with aura was really cool. Everything else was just really plain to me
airblizzard2026-01-24 02:13
Yeah Frieren's not an anime for fight scenes.
CompetitiveLook75272026-01-24 02:30
Kinda🤷♂️
taywray2026-01-24 02:38
Yep, this is the one I put on when I want to wind down and chill out to lovely pastoral imagery and "cheerful journey through the countryside" vibes.
Plus, I think it makes the occasional battle scenes and tense moments feel more impactful when the majority of the show is more low-key and slice of lifey.
dmdewd2026-01-24 02:54
Land of the Lustrous is at the top for me, too. Studio Orange just freaking knocked it out of the park adapting Ichikawa's work to high color 3d. It's so hauntingly beautiful
MagikarpMounds2026-01-24 04:01
I cannot agree with Frieren more. It is a masterclass in storytelling, animation, soundtrack and feels. Gorgeous piece of media that is a must watch regardless if you like anime or not.

I'm sure you're right, but all I've seen in Ruri Rocks are all those boulders
Mickey101202026-01-24 02:20
To piggy back off of Ruri Rocks, the OST for the show is also really good. Great OP and ED add with some pretty animation and enjoyable characters makes it a fun watch.
Connorghi2026-01-24 01:40
apocalypse hotel, the end had me tearing up, its a comedy but is very deep
duo99dusk2026-01-24 01:43
Great pick, it's a true masterpiece, that one episode before the finale had some many beautiful scenes and backgrounds. But the overall tone of the anime is aptly described as "beautiful"
Darkwolfen2026-01-24 02:57
I loved it. I might not be the most beautiful to me, but it was wonderful and touching.
SirThellesan2026-01-24 03:13

*5 Centimeters Per Second*
There were scenes so beautiful that I fell into the anime rabbit hole and never came back up again, perhaps for the whole life.
Somniumi2026-01-24 02:18
I’d lean to 5cm too. I always felt that this was the culmination of Shinkai’s early work.
His partnership with Tenmon also helped. Those quiet, piano pieces are among some of my favorite anime OSTs.
He said once that the choice of Sparkle in Your Name was to distinctly separate himself from the “next Ghibli vibe” that he has. And I get it. Radwimps freaking kills it in his new movies, but I miss those sad sad Tenmon tracks.
Let’s just have a moment for Through the Years and Far Away.
I watched it back in like 2010 or something when I was first into anime as a young adult. I'm a teacher now, and I'm putting together a unit that will justify showing it to my class this spring, as they all move up to junior high. I'm hoping to lay it on real thick and get some tears going. 😈

Probably A Silent Voice. But I would describe all of my favorites as some variety of beautiful, since they're the kind of stories that I prefer. 86, Vinland Saga, Frieren, Attack on Titan. A lot of them are dark and traumatic but also beautiful to me.
JustAnotherWitness2026-01-24 02:15
Dark and traumatic are my jam. For some reason none of the comedy anime’s I’ve watched make me laugh, but those twisted ones make me feel something.
xNocturnalshadow2026-01-24 01:46
Made in Abyss (content warning) - but the soundtrack, the scenery, the setting, and the sense of wonderment and adventure is just breathtakingly captivating and beautiful to me. One of my absolute favorites of all time.
And in a very similar vein - Girls' Last Tour for very similar reasons without the content warning.
JustAnotherWitness2026-01-24 02:13
Made in abyss is a favorite for me. It’s the only anime that’s made me want to read the manga. I’m on volume 62.5 now so just made it past the anime. So exciting. Can’t wait for the next movie to come out.
Beefy_Boogerlord2026-01-24 01:47
Land of The Lustrous. It's beautiful all the way through, but there is also an episode where for absolutely NO reason, the animation and action get cranked up to 11. It grabbed me by the chest.
The lunarians give Spirited away vibes. Phos has such an empowering character arc. It's a one-season masterpiece.

If we are talking purely art design (opposed to plot or story lines or whatever else) I would say there are moments in Porco Russo I really think are fantastic.
Just little moments when Porco is flying through the clouds and you see the land sliding past underneath...
Adm_Piett2026-01-24 01:51
The two Patlabor movies. The animation is just gorgeous.
blackninjakitty2026-01-24 01:55
From this season, Journal with Witch had left me holding my breath several times already. The writing, acting, and soft animation are incredible, without even getting into the character dynamics and way it handles its subject matter. It remains to be seen if it can keep this up but if it does it’s going to be a favourite.

Much too early for a best ever conversation, but Shiboyugi has been fantastic IF you are into more artsy stuff. I think I like it more as a film fan than as an anime fan. Haunting music and visuals, intentionally slow-burn and suspenseful, unique art style, quite beautiful imo.
From an art standpoint, Mononoke (NOT princess mononoke, which is also great) is really underseen.

Okay hear me out "the last Samurai", there is cg in the anime as well but the parts that aren't cg are some of if not the most memorable and beautiful animation I have ever seen, and you can tell a lot of time and effort went into it. I'm guessing that's why they used cg in other parts.
casca472026-01-24 02:34
All basic entries, but samurai champloo for the soundtrack, monster & psychopass for the philosophy, hell’s paradise for the eeriness of something so beautiful being so wicked

Hibike, sound euphonium. So many beautiful visuals and scenes you can watch on YouTube just of a musical band playing. It’s Kyoani’s masterpiece in my opinion. It’s finished too so no waiting any further like so many shows, anime has come so far..

A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, Garden of Words, Your Name. I could go on
taywray2026-01-24 02:46
Frieren is lovely, but it's more about the whole pastoral / cheerful vibe of the show than just the animation itself.
The whole Monogatari series has spectacular and unique animation - very sharp and geometric and stylized. The plots, writing, and characters are great, too.
Demon Slayer and JJK have some truly eye-popping fight sequences, and I was pretty blown away by the vivid colors and crazy monster designs of Hell's Paradise, as well.
Trs8222026-01-24 04:31
Frieren is more about the organic interactions for me and sentimental moments that don’t feel forced. I think it also hits especially hard for older audiences or have perhaps come to realize the impact of certain people in their lives too late, and the desire to go back and tell those people how much they mean while carrying that mindset forward to appreciate those currently in your life. It hits hard for me in that way at least.

Going a bit further out here, but I’d go with Houseki no Kuni (land of the lustrous). It is a CGI show, but the animation quality is top tier along with stunning landscapes in a very sparsely populated world. The show focuses on the personification of precious gemstones fighting a war against enemies who want to use their bodies for decoration. Highly recommended.

Steveignorantcrass12026-01-24 05:38
I have a whole theory on this movie, how water is the catalyst that she remembers vaguely but misunderstands. The guy sent by the sphere (I think he’s actually “the angel”) is meant to break the loop she’s stuck in to bring about the return of the “birds” for the Noah/dove parable. It’s why, for example, he doesn’t enter the fish-worshipping church that she goes into despite staying by her side otherwise (blasphemous). He also arrives on an array of anachronistic to the setting tanks much like a golden chariot from the heavens like in the Bible.

Wolf Children is what I always go back to when I just need to see something simply beautiful in its story and presentation. Hana's very hard working without feeling exploitive or melodramatic. She just does whatever she needs to do to raise her kids and make sure they have a place they can thrive. It has a really beautiful soundtrack backing it up and a youtube comment on one of them during a specific scene summed up what I liked about this movie nicely: "That moment when you clean the floors, patch the holes, polish the wood... and begin to discover a home."

For a smaller title that aired a few years ago, Land of the Lustrous. To me it is the standard for CGI in anime and is absolutely gorgeous to watch. Also a very unique story with great character development and insane action scenes that I think could only ever be captured in an animated medium.
Plus, I think it makes the occasional battle scenes and tense moments feel more impactful when the majority of the show is more low-key and slice of lifey.
There were scenes so beautiful that I fell into the anime rabbit hole and never came back up again, perhaps for the whole life.
* Tunnel to summer, Exit of Goodbyes

And in a very similar vein - Girls' Last Tour for very similar reasons without the content warning.
The lunarians give Spirited away vibes. Phos has such an empowering character arc. It's a one-season masterpiece.
Just little moments when Porco is flying through the clouds and you see the land sliding past underneath...
Mushishi
Orb: On the Movements of the Earth
Kimetsu no Yaiba
Chainsaw Man
Nana
Casshern Sins
Sousou no Frieren
Whole movie just takes the cake for me, waiting for something to knock it off the top spot. Frieren and Violet Evergarden are close behind if not on an almost equal level
Made me cry like Violet Evergarden.
From an art standpoint, Mononoke (NOT princess mononoke, which is also great) is really underseen.
This clip isn't the ending since I'll keep that a surprise, but it is a **very heavy spoiler**. It happens towards the end and shows how incredible the atmosphere/dialogue is in this series: https://youtu.be/PeNwY15Ctcs
Although my favorite is Naruto
The whole Monogatari series has spectacular and unique animation - very sharp and geometric and stylized. The plots, writing, and characters are great, too.
Demon Slayer and JJK have some truly eye-popping fight sequences, and I was pretty blown away by the vivid colors and crazy monster designs of Hell's Paradise, as well.

It's so beautiful, memorable, and has so many emotions to it. It's also been ranked S Tier 👍🏻
Ngl it had one of the most beautifully drawn art and settings I have seen, and the frames looked so dreamy with that art style. Loved it, and the characters in it were so likeable too.
*is wearing one of my berserk tshirts lol*
Kaguya-sama: love is war.
Beautifully written anime 🔥
