Does anybody remember the epic clusterfuck that was the Hellsing Ultimate OVA release schedule?
I remember being in college when the series was announced, and six years later, it was finally completed. Is there a super fan who knows why it took so long to get released? Any info I find about this is either murky or unreliable.

Still random they made a box for volumes 1-3 but didn't leave room for volume 4 so it's always separate from the other Blu-Rays.
To answer your question, I think the main thing was because they kept changing studios.
might go without saying but it was visually stunning.
6 45-50 minutes movies... coming out with a supposed already horrendous 1 year and a half gap between them.
The first came out in December 2017 (in Japan btw, half a year wait for us to have it subbed from bluray release).
The second in June 2019, where I hopped off because I already couldnt remember properly what happened in the first.
The third in March 2021.
The fourth... in October 2023, 2 years and a half later.
And... the fifth is not even out yet.
I... I just can't, big fan of the series but the movies' release schedule makes me go insane, what were they thinking???? You know what you could do with 6 movies of that length? A goddamn normal TV season of Girls und Panzer!
And they are doing the same shit with Princess Principal, but I already noped out from even checking them because Girls und Panzer movies taught me what was coming, fuck studio Actas.
The animation quality is also really good. Better this way than a season with wonky visuals, overworked staff and very likely breaks for rescheduling anyway..
Im with you on Princess Principal though, maybe I will remember that existed once its done
Massive development hell, slow manga release by Hirano, and it was tossed around to different studios.
They always said it was thanks to the western fanbase that it managed to keep going too! (not that hellsing wasn't popular enough in Japan, it's just that it gave them the extra push to finish it all)
Then they re did parts of the first two episodes to bring it to par with the last few. The early animation was rough but still good. It was basically like various studios side project that got bumped from Satelight, Madhouse then Graphinica.
It's basically guaranteed to come out whenever we get enough chapters because it still sells well.
I follow his Twitter and outside of being sick for a bit, he always doing something, lol.
I don't think Drifters will go on for much longer and Hirano seems to be picking up the pace a bit.
