I am more than halfway through Re:Zero Season 1 (Director’s Cut) and…
I’m wondering what Subaru’s deal is? I don’t dislike his character, but he seems to be this obnoxious white knight type. I get he feels indebted to Emilia for helping him, but trying to act like he is the only one that knows what is best just, seems pretentious?
I’m certain I am looking at it wrong, and I enjoy the series so will continue watching it. I guess part of me is wondering if Subaru’s character is always this way or if he improves personality wise in the later seasons.

He has no real gimmicks or mcguffins other than coming back to life after death, he isn't strong, or powerful, and was telelprted into a world with incomprehensibly powerful people who he has no hope of beating alone, and he suffers deeply for every inch of ground he gains, undergoing extremely traumatic events over and over again, all of which he vividly remembers.
His demeanor largely being an act is actually what makes him an extremely compelling character, I used to dislike him too until I thought about it.
It'd mess you up pretty badly if it happened to you, and your only coping mechanism is to pretend to be in control of a situation you know deep down you can't even begin to handle, with people who can (and often do) kill you quite effortlessly.
Yes. This is exactly correct. Subaru's got a lot of personal flaws, fairly egregious ones, and unfortunately the only way he's gonna get over those problems is them getting him killed.
Subaru has exactly one ability. To do it all over again. And again. And again.
By dying.
That’s a BIG burden to be carrying.
He can fix *anything* given enough time.
He’s also completely and utterly alone in the journey.
Latching onto another is how he anchors himself and gives himself purpose. What you are seeing at episode 8 of the directors cut is the reality coming to slap him in the face… hard.
It’s not that he can’t fix the problems he’s facing it’s that he is juggling all of this burden that no one else sees. All of his relationships in every failed timeline never happened. In his eyes he’s a hero that has conquered soooo many trials by being and doing the right thing at the right time, but to everyone else… he’s brash and reckless but things work out.
His inability to stay away even when explicitly told is directly related to his trauma from his ability to rewind. He cannot fix what he is not aware of. That’s terrifying.
The reality is that Subaru is just that. A normal person. There are things that he simply cannot do and cannot be. And he has to come to terms with that. That’s what the previous episode and episode 8 are showing.
Is that he’s disconnected from what he is, vs what he sees himself as.
If I was to summarize this while avoiding spoilers, he has a grave case of lack of self confidence and his few wins earlier on made him falsely think he finally overcame his overall lack of prowess. When his bubble burst, all of his faults were broadly exposed and we got that ugly result.
Sadly the anime also cut quite a bit in the throne room scene and it makes Subaru seem more at fault when in reality he was baited by Roswaal and Puck to lash out like that.
I like Puck, but I can tell Roswaal is a massive shit starter.
