is there an anime you thought everyone exaggerated the greatness of until you grew up watched it and realized fuck they're right
Mine was Sangatsu no Lion and also Monogatari Series Although I had also heard a lot that Revue Starlight's film was the best anime film ever made and that it was Kinema Citrus's best product. And to tell the truth, they definitely didn't lie, I mean, peak and splendid.

This will save so much of your sanity online. To answer your question, no they did not.
If a niche seinen show about Shogi becomes hyped that probably because its really good, not because its the popular shounen of the season, you get my point?
The more you watch only 1 genre, the less likely you actually watch a range of anime, at which point the popularity is just kinda pointless. You can only compare it to stuff you already watched, thats the issue with battle shounen beeing "hyped", most fans only watch other battle shounen.
As an example: If you are new to anime and only watched Mars of Destruction, then technically thats the best anime you have ever seen.
That's just your opinion of good. But to most people, they would think that the new hyped up shounen is good and that shogi show in your example is really boring.
I see exactly what you're saying. I'm with you in liking those sorts of shows more and I use the same ways to pick shows I watch. But if a show is hyped up by the masses, they think it's good and most people who watch it because of the hype will think the same. You, rightfully so, have your own opinions on shows and know how to spot a show you'd like based on the crowd hyping it up.
Battle shounen fans are simply overrepresented in the fandom, so if I see a battle shounen anime getting talked about a lot it does not indicate an outstanding anime. It just indicates battle shounen beeing battle shounen.
With anime specifically there's also the dynamic that mainstream hype tends to be reserved for battle shounen with others getting a miniscule fraction of the attention. They're the one type of anime people get surface level exposure to. If you're a fan of the genre, good for you, hype will land 90% of the time.
If you're not, you'll have to find your own crowds that explore more of what the medium has to offer and develop their own hype cycles and cult classics. For example, in my groups the seasonal discussions in the largest parts revolve around Ikoku Nikki, Shiboyugi and Seihantai, in a season with Frieren and JJK around.
AFAIK it didnt sell well in japan, so much for "western streaming drives sequels ".
I mean… the die hards are still guilty of exaggerating a lot and it’s far from a masterpiece, but I can at least understand now how someone could come to that conclusion.
But now I have rewatched it like 10 times.
I just meant... What you're describing isn't a general early 00s aesthetic (I can think of a plethora of anime from the era that had completely different styles) and more like the aesthetic of a bunch of shows that all had Clamp as a character design.
Granted, there were a lot of them. And probably some imitators too.
For Liz I was worried I overhyped myself on it through a few video essays and reviews that praised it to the high heavens. Well, it shot way past my wildest expectations and I couldn't be happier.
Aria and Tutu are just very well-regarded in my friend groups and I'm glad they also won me over.
After dropping Fanfare of Adolescence in that season, I was searching for a horse racing anime. I came across someone recommending Uma Musume saying how great a sports anime it was. I gave it a chance not expecting much because horse racing anime are very rare. Fuck, they're right. It was fucking great.
End of Evangelion and Legend of the Galactic Heroes definitely hold up to the 10/10 allegations.
Ironically while I so consider LoGH an amazing anime, I rate it rather harshly because of all the rosenritter plotarmour nonsense in the middle of the run. The remake actually toned that down a lot.
Well, we should not forget (could apply to many comments in this thread) that there's also a matter of personal taste...
There's a lot of shows people named in this thread, that I think are shit, or just mediocre at best.
So sometimes you may watch a hyped show and think "Ok that's bad, I guess it was overhyped" when it fact it's just not for you, and when you DO watch a show that's actually "worth the hype", well maybe the next guy will watch it and think ok this one's overhyped.
I recognize that something like The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a great anime even though I don't personally like it at all, and similarly there are shows that I enjoy like Kyoukai no Kanata that aren't all that well written.
There are plenty of people though that watch their 5th anime ever and slam a 10/10 rating on it and then look back realizing that Sword Art Online may just not be all that good.
I think a good example is something Evangelion where people always say "unlike other mecha this one is about the characters". Eva is a fantastic anime, but it's not unique in that aspect but a lot of fans who may have seen Eva haven't necessarily seen Zeta Gundam.
I'm hesitant to reduce all of artistic criticism to a matter of personal opinion, but yeah it does sometimes come down to just that at the very least.
There is a difference between something beeing good but not your taste and actually just not very good at all, taste aside.
Too many times - over the last couple years - I've seen shows like Sword Art Online or Attack on Titan described as "The Best Thing They've EVER watched, like EVER!!!!!" then you realise that they've watched perhaps Full Metal Alchemist, and one of the long running shows (Bleach/One Piece/DragonBall Z/etc) and are about 15 years old.
Question #3: If I searched their account for "Peak" or "GOAT", would I get a single result because in their mind this show really is the greatest of all time?
Or do they have 15 "Greatest of all time" shows every single season?
More often than not, it's the latter. When everything's PEAK and everything's GOAT and the guy has 50 "Anime of the year" every year, yeah that means nothing.
The people who think Star Wars is the Ultimate Best Ever Sci Fi like Ever.
Their record of watching Science-Fiction includes: The Star Wars movies, and most of the Live Action Star Wars series.
They don't recognise names like Asimov, or Herbert, they never knew about shows like Altered Carbon, CounterPart or even the movie like The Martian.
HOW DARE YOU QUESTION THEIR PERSPECTIVE! How dare you question their perspective! Their Opinion is Valid! Some People Only Have access To Popular Stuff! (Despite if they have access to watch Star Wars, they can access too of alot of other Sci-Fi).
I can forgive youth and the in-experience that is associated with it, but it grinds my gears when I am old enough and experienced enough to have a depth of knowledge they don't have.
Somone who watches Breaking Bad and OMG THIS IS THE GREAT SHOW OF ALL TIME!
Then they watch Game of thrones and OMG THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME ^^except ^^the ^^last ^^couple ^^seasons ^^that ^^sucked
And then they watch 20 other shows in the next few years, and half of them are also the greatest shows of all time.
We don't see it *as much* for western shows/movies and stuff, but I feel like it's everywhere in the anime community.
Everything is peak everything is AOTS.
So for me to care about someone calling something peak/goat/aots, I'd really need to know how many peak/goat/aots shows they have.
Same with people who rate everything 10/10, I mean it's a personal rating that doesn't affect anything, but if you watched 100 shows and rated 90 of them 10/10, then the fact that you recommend me a '10/10 show' means nothing, it just mean "you watched it".
All I'd seen of anime at the time was what I would've called "cartoons" like Naruto and Dragon Ball, nothing I was interested in. Thought nothing of it, but I stumbled upon a bit of the soundtrack on YouTube one day. Absolutely loved it, looked up the scene it was from, absolutely loved it too. Asked my friends for anime recommendations after that, and here I am now, almost a decade later, kinda obsessed with it.
Its mainly a very nice SoL for me with surprisingly good action.
This “gimmick” is related to the length of her age to the length of her journey.
It will always be there because of her species and the relative minuscule amount of time she spent with Himmel.
Claiming the first journey is far more interesting tells me you are viewing the story through the lens of your expectations rather than what the story is trying to tell
Most Digimon fans I see either call it a hidden gem or have never watched it. It took me years of hearing that for me to finally watch it.
No way something this mainstream can be that good.
Fuck, it was that good.
I put it off for 7 months thinking that it was just an "above average" anime, boi I was wrong, this really is kino
...fuck, I'm old... gotta remember how many teens are on Reddit.
The "old classics" were being released when I was growing up. I didn't have to wait for my tastes to mature for at least the last 20-30 years.
shit slaps. I thought it would be like a "generic seasonal" show, but the atmosphere and music are so unique!
And what an ending! That ending moved me
I just binged watched both seasons, the movie, and am fully caught up now in just one week and I can't think of a single other anime since I was a kid that left my jaw on the floor as much as JJK, it genuinely feels like I'm watching DBZ as a kid again, absolutely cracked anime, it's insane how it just keeps topping itself, it doesn't follow rules, you get an insane fight and episode that would normally be the climax of a whole season and the show just says "yeah, how about 5 more of these in a row that are even crazier."
The villains are INSANE, the story, the characters are all so good, the fighting is bar raising, it's kinda perfect.
In more recent times, I'd say Uma Musume; when it was released I didn't even watch it, I thought the idea was just silly. I gave it a try and it's actually pretty goated. My opinion may also be influenced by the fact that I'm very familiar with the japanese horse racing scene, so I find all the references to be really charming and well done.
Everything I saw or heard about it made it seem ridiculous. And it was ridiculous, but also incredibly cool, and it was pretty consistent about how everything worked which I appreciated. TLDR I expected something really stupid, but it wasn't dumb enough to be not cool and exciting.
Pretty much everything I checked out because it was "so fucking good" and all, either it was just 'okay", or sometimes I even dropped them.
All my 'top tier' shows are shows that I simply read the synopsis and thought 'this sounds really good!'. That's also why I rely a lot more on my own gut feeling, vs what others are saying.
(I still got a few shows to check out on my list of "People said this is really good!", so maybe it'll happen someday!)
So I finally caved in and gave it a try and I just can't get into it for the life of me.
