Looking for neo-retro anime shows (009-cyborg soldier/tetsujin 28/astroboy/android kikaider)

i've been watching 009 the cyborg soldier and really enjoying the fun pulp adventure action of it ... talking about the 2001 anime ... i liked Android Kikaider also, the 2000's aesthetic of adapting 1950's-60's manga with dnb style music ...

i have tetsujin 28 and astroboy 2000's series to watch also ... seems like a lot of tezuka shows had a resurgance in these years ...

are there any other anime to watch as mentioned above ...
i will also put METROPOLIS on the list also

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199

Cassherns Sins

Devilman Crybaby

Young Black Jack

Dororo

Lupin III (always relevant but Parts 4-6, Zero, The First, and Koike are rather good modern incarnations)

I'm happy to help. Pluto might count too since it's Astro Boy related.

I wish FuniRoll was allowed to continue and pick-up where they left off with the Eng. dub of "Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199". For those unaware, Mallorie "Frieren" Rodak played Yuki in what Funi did dub of that remake.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-24 18:40

I never bothered with the dub so I had no idea who plays who there, I think what's really unfortunate is that the quality gap is so wide between 2199 and its sequels.

Bubblegum Crisis maybe? It's a bit older but was one of my favorites for a long time. Aired from 87-90 or so I think. Mercenary girls in power armor fighting monsters. Was a fun anime.

The Getter Robo revival shows starting with Getter Robo: Armageddon. Old-school super robot action with more edge, which is actually closer to the original Manga than the early anime adaptations were.

In the same style there's the Mazinger Z remakes, starting with Mazinger Edition Z.

There's also Clevatess which leans more towards the darker and more violent anime of the 80s OVA era, both in art and storytelling.

Shin Mazinger Z, remake of the original Mazinger.

Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera

Gegege Kitarou have several modern retelling, 2018 is the most recent one.

Cutie Honey Universe although I'd personally pick the 2003 OVA version.

"Phoenix"(*Hi no Tori*) is still popular even today, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets rebooted in the near future.
Its world is incredibly diverse, ranging from stories set in the distant past to tales set in outer space,
which also makes it a very challenging work to adapt into an anime in terms of structure.
