Is Initial D worth picking up?

Ok so, I have plenty of time in my hands right now and I was wondering what to watch

Scrolling theough sites I always find myself with memes and hype scenes from Initial D, I understand it's a classic but is it worth picking up today?

Hell Yeah

GarySlayer2026-01-25 04:50

If you love cars surely you can pick up. Its good.

Ryuuyami472026-01-25 06:35

Even if they don't love cars, they will after they watch it xD. It's like how I wasn't into Volleyball, Baseball or Cooking but I did after watching Haikyuu, Ace of Diamonds and Food Wars resp.

cookingboy2026-01-25 08:26

I mean food wars is different. I don’t love cooking (despite my username) but I do love delicious food porn lmao.

Less_Party2026-01-25 16:16

It was always way too silly for me and I never liked the terrible CG.

Like ah yes, competition bred WRC homologation specials, well known for being useless on twisty mountain roads.

FadedZer02026-01-25 04:54

its a rough watch ngl, the constant switching of animation for better and worse was hard to push through, i watched it purely because of memes and music but slowly started to like the plot in the end

HonkHonkMTHRFKR2026-01-25 04:54

It’s a fun anime, but I personally wouldn’t spend more than $10 on it. I’d spend 20 on the soundtrack though

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-25 04:54

Yeah it's a good time, though it eventually gets more and more repetitive.

archklown5552026-01-25 04:55

The songs are worth watching it alone. And if you enjoy the Eruobeat racing MF Ghost continues it and if your still a fan of Anime and Eurobeat no reason check out Irys Carbonated Love , Diamond Girlfriend, and Escalate on YouTube.

The animation, even for the time, wasn't great. But the music is iconic, and it certainly has it's hype moments. The overall plot isn't groundbreaking, but is enjoyable. If you have the free time, it's not a bad way to spend it.

DurianLongan2026-01-25 06:39

The funniest thing I feel when watching it was s2 had worse animation, but the race had better cgi lmao.

casualbadideas2026-01-25 04:59

the first few seasons are good but it does have a few extremely lame plot armor moments.

Asmornous2026-01-25 04:59

Absolutely. Would give MF Ghost a pass tho, it’s got great racing but the fan service/ love drama was annoying

Mediocre-Ant-71782026-01-25 05:05

I don't regret watching it, but man is the animation rough. If you love racing though, you've gotta watch it.

Tehbeefer2026-01-25 05:10

I'd say it's at least worth giving it an episode or three to see for yourself if you like it, if not, then at least you know the vibe.

StrawHatCook2026-01-25 05:14

You can try the movies. They’re good at adapting the gist of the story and it’s not very long. 3 movies total

Both-Variation21222026-01-25 05:34

Is it repetetive and full of anime bulshit? Sure. Does first season look like PS2 cutscene and art style changes every season to the point you can't recognise characters? Yup. Still enjoying it, despite not being into racing at all. It gives similar feeling as watching edgelord shonen. You just absorb coolness basking from the screen, grin at every "nani!" screamed by the rivals and your heart beats faster to the rythm of eurobeat.

If you like cars/street racing it’s good show.

Ryuuyami472026-01-25 06:33

Yes sir. Its really addictive. I didn't it was gonna be that good. It even ran on Animax when I was a kid. When I finally rewatched it, I was blown away. It instantly became one of my all time favourites. Its intense, the music gets memed sure but its honestly the best OST I've heard alongside Samurai Champloo. It really has some epic moments.

Also worth noting that it's almost near perfectly accurate since one of the Pioneers of Drifting was involved as an Advisor.

The animation sure feels dated but it gets MUCH better along the way. Some of the best CGI in anime. They even remade the initial seasons with the manga-esque animation but I'd say start from the very beginning. It's really special. This'll turn people who aren't even into cars into Turbo fans. I already loved cars so it was a win win for me.

ComfortProud24022026-01-25 06:49

Yes

Maxxjulie2026-01-25 07:04

It's very fun if you like sports anime. I mean it's very good. I wasn't even into that type of music until this anime changed my mind

modusxd2026-01-25 07:04

It got some hype af scenes

Playest_42472026-01-25 09:37

I think MF geist is like the spiritual successor that's actually airing this season.

You should check that out

throwawayALD83BX2026-01-25 09:41

It's peak af. Season 1 is kinda slow and they use [Back on the Rocks](https://youtu.be/y88M1eaM538?si=0l7dn4HeZDxbhtdh) every episode but it kicks ass anyway and only gets more hype from there

lolifreak0_02026-01-25 12:32

Yes, but watch Japanese dub.

UMP45isnotflat2026-01-25 15:23

Yes its really good, each entry gets a little bit worse though so I think the movie is a good ending point

There is surprisingly good drama, character developement and even romance.

Boris-_-Badenov2026-01-25 16:51

good, but Capeta is better

Alt22212026-01-25 18:55

if you like classics, absolutely.
