What I like less is *Bubblegum crisis*, which I finished yesterday. Or rather, I liked the premise (4 women who form the core of the mercenary/bodyguard Knight Sabers group), but its execution was somewhat messy. Like, I'd have appreciated it if we got a bit more background on the setting, the girls (how'd they come to form this group?) and why "boomers" are this big of a problem, yet still legal, et cetera.
Strangely enough, it was the very last episode which was probably the best in showing how the group operates, but still not nearly enough.
If ever there was a story which was a prime candidate for a "remaster" or just a complete redo, this is it.
That said, if it was a particularly impactful finish then left me reeling, then I'll usually take a break from anime for at least the day.
Yeah that makes sense. I always just watch one show at a time now but that's probably what I would do if I watched multiple
And yeah, I do usually not follow up any show that leaves a big impact immediately with a new one. Usually a day or two after. I think Vinland Saga last year I didn't watch any anime for like 1-2 weeks after.
But yea, for me, *Dragon ball* ended with *Z* (the "*Kai*" version). *GT* was... meh. I've only caught snippets of the later stuff through osmosis, but things like Frieza returning didn't excite me, and I think they turn into actual deities at some point, so I just pretend they don't exist.
Of the more recent movies, I've only seen *Battle of gods*, *Broly* and *Super hero*, which were... well, different. *Battle of gods* was fucking trash, with Vegeta doing a dance number making me just switch it off. It'd have been fine if it were some kind of alternative setting or a parody, but this is supposed to be canon. Nope.
*Broly* now being a good guy is probably an expected retcon, so whatever, the movie itself was fine. But I did love *Super hero*, It mostly ignores everything which happens after *Z*, or rather, doesn't focus on it, and just follows Best Dad Picollo as he has to deal with a problem while the literal battle gods are out of town (or universe, idk).
Ideally, they'd leave the *Dragon ball* franchise the fuck alone, but hey, there's money to be made and it's a world-famous IP, so that'd be impossible. It's like *One piece* \- anyone thinking that the end (which has been announced to be coming for the last decade or so) is actually the end, is fucking nuts. It's too valuable, so there'll be sequels, spin-offs, movies, etc.
EDIT: While we're on the topic, allow me to genuinely recommend the Kakarot videogame. It's surprisingly decent. Maybe get it during a discount tho. Flying through the world of the series was fun, the ingame cutscenes are fantastic (basically the anime, but rendered with the beautfiul visuals of the game) and combat is a bit more complex than just buttonmashing, tho you can still do that if you want. My only critique would be that they should've included the events of the initial *Dragon ball*, so you'd have the complete story (they're still releasing DLC for the later series, after all...)
Daima was nice as a special sendoff for Toriyama, but it feels even less canon than GT.
I will probably still watch it though..
It would be nice if there was a setting to prioritise the positions I look up the most.
That is certainly a ride huh? I heard the manga was even more dramatic in some ways but I have not read it yet.
The most depressing part for me was actually rather subtile, dont read that yet though. [bokurano]>!as the control room gets emptier, they stop cheering each other on or interact much at all, they just sort of accept their fate!<

Atleast the show is good
Rifujin doesn’t even know what he’s writing. He’s just saying shit.
Or really anime anime where huge bodies of water are a big part of the story.
I've already watched Aria.
My mecha experience starts and ends with Evangelion, so a mecha anime will be a novelty, if nothing else.
Thanks!

Feels like a cop out to pick One Piece, but technically, yeah it works.
I'll second the other comment of A Lull in the Sea, great watch.
Synopsis reminded me of Wolf's Rain, which is a very good thing.
But it's MAL score is 6.7. Hmm.
Mars Daybreak
Children of the Whales: it's a sea of sand, but it takes place on an island that's floating/moving around on the "sea"
Fafner in the Azure: it doesn't necessarily revolve around water, but IIRC, most of the first season takes place on an island (you also mentioned watching Evangelion; it's similar in the whole "traumatized teenage mecha pilots" sense)
RahXephon: also isn't necessarily "nautical", but the MC lives near a beach for most of the series and water is a recurring motif (the mid-episode eyecatch shows the title underwater and IIRC, the RahXephon is surrounded by fountains and a moat when the MC first finds it); also has some Evangelion similarities (though the director's stated that he wasn't trying to copy Eva specifically; he was trying to homage a 70s mecha anime called "Reideen the Brave" or "Brave Raideen".)
(For the record, Reideen the Brave also takes place on an island, though I haven't seen it and don't know that much about it.)
Gaiking: Legend of Daiku-Maryu (possibly; I've only seen the first few episodes): the first few episodes take place on an island/out at sea and IIRC, the Daiku-Maryu functions as both an airship and submarine/regular ship; the monsters enter Earth through a dimensional portal located in the middle of the ocean and a lot of the early ones resemble marine life)
(There's also the original Gaiking from the 70s, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know how much of what I said about Legend of Daiku-Maryu applies to it.)

The obvious bit is that I think Ippo is just less interesting as a protagonist and never feels (at least through where I’m at) like he’s got skin in the game quite like Joe does.
The less obvious bit, and the one that I’m just kind of realizing is that *Ippo* talks *way* too much. Watching over a fight and there’s always someone talking, whether it’s Ippo’s inner monologue or the commentator. I guess the Joe commentator sucks more at his job, but it is often in the silence when it’s just two guys slugging one other or staring off in the distance that the show speaks the most. This goes beyond the ring and into the general storytelling, as *Joe* doesn’t need to explain everything and is fine having extended sequences of just our MC walking through the world. Part of the allure of Joe too is that which doesn’t get said, and how you come to understand his character without necessarily needing it spelled out to you verbally. Like, without spoiling, there’s just so much in that final fight that is conveyed without need for dialogue and it’s that caliber of writing that I feel is missing from *Ippo*.
It’s not necessarily a condemnation of *Ippo* per se. I still do like *Hajime no Ippo*, but I *love* *Ashita no Joe* and for now that’s what I’m going with as to why.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Shows I haven't dropped yet:
- Adventurer's Daily Grind
- Jack-of-All-Trades
The first has Veronica, who is S-tier, but also [has] >!an underage succubus!< plotline. The banter is barely keeping me here, but may not for long.
The latter reminds me of the A-Rank Party show a while back (which I dropped), except the students here aren't praising every minor thing he does as though it were some miracle only he can do.
I don't know, maybe I'm just in the mood for some trash.
That synchronised dancing segment in the second half is especially neat. Seriously, how did CG suddenly get *this* good in anime? I can barely differentiate it from traditional 2D animation anymore.
CG has been good for a while, like I sometimes post ES! MVs in this thread, and that franchise alone has spent years nurturing a pipeline of really, *really* good 3D staff and getting them to blend it with 2D work. [Just look at this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nhA8spqWMI).
And they're not the only ones in the industry to put in the effort.
Yes.
>Like Konosuba or Mushoku Tensei?
No, not even slightly.
Though I'm sure waiting for the fansubs'll still be the better option because of typesetting and stuff.
I noticed with Medalist’s last season that the subtitles in Dutch - and presumably other languages - did seem to follow the Japanese script much closer. So I’ve just defaulted to watching Medalist in Dutch.
The sole exception being Gothicmade, an anime that I think has sat on my PTW list for 10+ years at this point because the director won't allow even a physical release and getting to a Japanese movie theater to see a 10+ year old movie isn't exactly easy.
[](#seasonaltired)
definitely I can feel the need to create a priority system for the PTW so I can break it into manageable chunks, for whenever I feel like actually bingeing. I guess the good news is that earlier this month I succeeded in binge-watching several shows including Cinderella Gray and Clevatess. so I would definitely say Cinderella Gray cour 2 delivers the goods, and is worth putting at high priority.

It could be a decent coming of age story, it could be small arcs of handling trauma and exploring the issues of "protecting" children, it could be a combat anime with a weird gimmick, but instead is a complete mess with no focus
I'm not particularly squirmish about romance in anime, but this one goes out of the way to make it uncomfortable, so instead of having a normal kid that wants to have normal relationships of his age in conflict with an adult alter ego that wants nothing to do with that, the show blurs the line and explicitly calls out that yes, the 60 something is kissing the 15yo but it's ok because reasons.
The characters almost have meat to them, in particular the main girl starts off strong, with clear goals and the will to chase them, but as the show progress she's more and more portrayed as a confused child that does things because she's whimsy, and not because she's an actual person - which could be the _point_ of the show and something to be explored, but the show gets distracted with...razor sharp skis? and guns?
There is an interesting show to be made about learning to balance protecting children, letting them fall on their faces and scolding them, and sure, throw some guns and immortal freaks in there, and I think that could be a really good show. Sanda is not it.
So during the first hour of this movie I was already calling one of the best movies in years, that hour is really, really fun. Iroha is this grindset student that lives along, is permanently sleep deprived, works like two jobs and constantly exhausted. Then she meets Kaguya, the alien from the moon who becomes this hyper-genki girl and together become a streaming pair with Kaguya as the star. Their chemistry is great, and I was constantly laughing my ass this first hour, great duo. And my god, the character animation man, its incredible. Its the most expressive anime I have seen in years. I usually like to take screenshots of funny faces and got to the point where I had to pause and use my frame-by-frame tool to get as many as I could but that would have tripled the runtime of the movie so I just had to stop. But it looks so, so good along with great voice acting. With the great comedy and animation I was already seeing myself in awards 2026 shilling this, but there is still more to this.
There's the setting that did throw me and my friends offguard because we went into this pretty blind, we didn't know this was the future and didn't give much thought to the first scene. So its 2030, which is not very far into the future so ofc the world looks pretty much the same. But then they also have deep-dive VR contacts which like, feels like a gigantic technology leap?? Dunno why we got so fixated on this but it was really funny to joke about how the world looks the exact same but someone poured a bajillion dollars to research VR contacts. There was also a really quick scene of this guy holding RBG chopsticks and we just popped off saying this is what the future looks like lmao. Err, but anyways, this is just a world where deep-dive games like SAO are a thing and we see the girls play Fortnite and League of Legends, very cool.
Then there's the plot. I haven't touched on the duration, but this is almost two hours and a half, that's a chonky movie. As I said, the first hour was great, but then I looked at the timer and was like "there's no way it keeps this up, what do they even want to do with 90 more minutes". I mean, did we *reaaally* need the 15 minute LoL fight? It looked great but I kinda spaced out from how long it was dragging. I don't know if it is my brain being tired at 2am but the movie felt slowed down considerably from that first half into the second, I just wasn't feeling it the same.
Then it got to the climax of every Kaguya story, with its own tweaks ofc. [So]>!Kaguya is leaving so we have the whole drama of her leaving. There's also this weird time-travel thing going on about Yachiyo arriving 8000 years in the past and became the slug that is in her shoulder, so its like, all of Kaguya, Yachiyo and the slug are Kaguya. Also, Yachiyo is actually bamboo shoot connected to a machine. Uhhh, I may need to rewatch those last 30 minutes, it got a bit convoluted especially watching this at 2am.!<
So, I historically do poorly with non-franchise movies, I have only like 5 movies above a 7/10 that don't belong to franchises. I thought this could be another exception given how much fun I had in the first hour but it started to falter from there. I will probably rewatch, its worth of it. But for now I will give it yet another comfortable **7/10**.
Still big recommend.
I haven't seen the movie, but in SAO terms, your description of the contacts sounds more like augmented reality/AR (seeing virtual images in the real world, like through a pair of glasses) rather than virtual reality/VR (seeing only the virtual images) particularly deep-dive (player is unconscious viewing the VR world as if in a dream).
The way it works is they put the contacts and use controllers to move in the world, with the contacts providing the images of the games and they play from first person PoV. So imo it is just like current VR headsets but in contacts.
This show, does in fact, slap.

My prior favorites are Berserk, Hellsing, Fate Zero, FMA Brotherhood, Bleach, and Jojo
durararara
reincarnated as a sword
the red ranger becomes an adventurer in another world
My favourites are Hunter x Hunter, FMAB, Code Geass, AOT, Apothecary Diaries, 86, Bleach, Fruits Basket but I'll watch pretty much anything
- Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (sci-fi/action/mecha, standalone series so no previous Gundam knowledge is needed)
- Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (sci-fi/adventure/mecha)
- Colourcloud Palace/The Story of Saiunkoku (historical drama with light fantasy)
In many other similar ways, this anime fits the idea I had of the medium before I got really into it back in 2024. The way the protagonist behaves, the scatterbrained, unfocused plot, the ridiculously silly jargon... It's all there.
Sounds like perfection, I'll cue it up soon.
The weird thing is that it released on schedule on international Disney+, with English dub and all, so no clue what the hold up could be.
(personally, this is one of those "They wrote this specifically for me!" hah)
For example, it was by going through the recommendation tab on the Tsuki ga Kirei page that I found Just Because (9/10), 5cm/s (10/10), Tsurezure Children (9/10), Orange (10/10)
Similarly, the Narutaru recommendation page lead me to School Days, which, in turn, lead me to White Album 2 and Scum's Wish, and, I'm sure, eventually, Higurashi and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien.
My scores for Tsukigakirei (9/10) and Just Because (7/10) ended up being very different though. I can kind of see the similarities in the sense that they're more grounded/realistic in both storylines and art style, but the characters in Just Because didn't show enough personality to hold my interest. On the other hand, I liked just about everyone from the main cast in Tsukigakirei.
Say, I looked at the recommendations for my #1 anime of all time, and (among those I watched), here's what I got:
- 10/10: 4 shows
- 9/10: 2 shows
- 8/10: 5 shows
- 7/10: 2 shows
- 6/10: 1 show
- On hold (may or may not complete them someday): 2 shows
- Dropped: 9 shows
Now, I looked at recommendations for my WORST anime of all time (of the same genre) and there's only 4 that I've seen, but my scores:
- 10/10: 1 show
- 9/10: 1 show
- 8/10: 1 show
- Dropped: 1 show
I dropped MORE shows (by %) in the recommendations for my top show, than I did for my worst show.
If it shits the bed at some point (given it's only 1/3 into the season), will you lower the rating? If you don't, that seems a bit weird, but if you do, then a preemptive 10/10 doesn't mean all that much!
> then a preemptive 10/10 doesn't mean all that much!
I mean, yea, I was mostly joking around lol.
100 Meters

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

Hibike! Euphonium - About a girl in a high school band who initially didn't care now trying to win at national competitions. By far my favorite completed anime.
Yuru Camp - One of the most calming/relaxing anime I've ever seen.
On musing about this a little, I feel like muted character chemistry is perhaps *part* of the standard trope set for high school romance. If it's too sparky then the lack of progress feels particularly jarring.
This comment probably needs a lot more elaboration, but perhaps the quickest rephrase I can offer is:
1. Slow speed of progress of highschool romcoms is a feature, not a bug
2. In order for slow progress speed to work, having muted chemistry helps make it feel more plausible / natural
3. Both of these seem to be common enough that they could be considered "solid defining tropes" for the genre - not essential, so there are plenty of counter-examples, but certainly overwhelmingly common to the point where they are an established feature that a viewer of the genre could reasonably expect to be present for the average entry
> better character chemistry
Alright, I'll give it an episode!
Also, https://myanimelist.net/anime/60162/Akujiki_Reijou_to_Kyouketsu_Koushaku had some pretty fantastic chemistry and flirting, if you missed it.
It's a much smaller list than I was anticipating, but I'm happy with it.
Except, I also like the routine of having seasonals on most days of the week and discussing them with friends on Discord on release. There's something fun to being present on the forefront of seasonal discussion. Even if I'm not watching only the best I could, I get to talk more about the ones I at least moderately enjoy and that makes it worth it.
At this point I'd be surprised if there are more than five existing anime I haven't seen that I'd give 10/10 and there's only one title I can think of that I'd give decent odds to (3-gatsu S2).
[](#hardthink)
Of course it's not like I have a high hit rate for airing shows either, maybe at some point I should do an analysis comparing shows I pulled from my backlog to things I watched airing since I've gotten a lot of junk for both.
I recently watched Creamy Mami (80s magical girl anime). It's not spectacular by any means but the fact that it's a complete story with charming characters immediately puts it above half of the seasonals that are airing. It having some thematic depth and some really shocking plot points put it well above 9/10 of the airing shows I watched in 2024.
Last season I enjoyed Sanda and This Monster Wants to Eat Me, but knowing that both will likely never get a season 2 and the fact that the season introduces plot points that will likely never be expanded upon or completed ruins a little bit of the "longevity" of it for me. Not being able to complete it's themes, it's plot, or it's character development will likely kill its ability to remain in the collective memory, and it also kills the likelihood that I think back on it in a few years with anything beyond "that was fun".
I don't have a bad time watching these anime and it's fun to keep up and talk with your peers, but most of these shows will not only be forgotten by them but will likely also be forgotten by us as well.
That would imply I don't end up with at least half a dozen new 10/10s every season, if not more, out of whatever I pick up.
[](#rinkek)
If you find 6 anime every season that you think are masterpieces that's great and I'm happy for you, but if you extrapolate that out you've got 500+ masterpieces out there from years past waiting for you. Surely 50 of those 500 are blowing the 6 from you love from this season out of the water.
Looking at your MAL I think you've got a super varied and interesting list. I may be a little harsher than you when it comes to scoring but I don't think my comment is applicable to someone like you seeing as you're very much watching classics as well.
I mostly mean people who are watching 19 anime this season and that's it. If you've got 9 that you love and 10 that are just okay I'm sure those people can find something they like significantly more.
1. There's more to watching anime than just 'watching the best there is'; Discussion is a big thing, and no one wants to discuss older shows. I mean, put it this way: We're currently discussing anime instead of watching these 10/10 anime (old or new), there's a reason for that!
2. How do you know which older anime are 10/10 without watching them first? If you're talking about watching the top shows: I dropped literally 3/4 of them, just like I drop 3/4 of the shows I watch in a season. This may work better for others, but for me, there's a near 0 correlation between "other people rated it highly" and "I'm gonna like it". So watching a bunch of 'presumed 10/10 old shows' won't do me any better than watching random seasonals.
Whereas with a block of show, I feel like I need to set aside time for it. I don't want to end up on like the final 3 episodes late on a work night - especially if the show is good. If I don't watch it, it'll bother me and maybe I can't even fall asleep well. If I do, I'm sleep deprived.
I've also been watching anime for like more than 20 years, so I've more or less watched most old things I want to watch - at least the ones I can reasonably access anyway.
Also sometimes the shit shows are the ones that are really fun to discuss.
It's also impossible to be 100% 'productive' with time. I could be watching a new anime or playing a new game, but I choose to lie there and veg out to youtube shorts or doomscroll.
And maybe you might disagree, but I think it is important to watch something bad once in a while. Not deliberately of course, but it doesn't hurt to have a varied diet. If only just to provide some contrast in your experiences. If you've only watched so called 10/10 shows... what kind of frame of reference do you even have? How can you tell if something is good if you haven't seen how bad something can get?
I also think its nice to just be able to form your own opinion on something fresh out the oven without any preconceptions. How do you even decide what's 10/10? It should be subjective. If you only watch stuff that others determine to be 10/10..... to me that's a sad way to live.
The weekly wait also builds anticipation, and to some degree patience and maybe even discipline.

I came into this season expecting nothing and thinking it'll be a backlog season but it's started off strong and has heavy hitters already.
dont these guys just compete in test scores and sports?
What a wild two minutes. I have no regrets.
Or I just go to sleep and get back to *One Piece* in the morning. That'll numb my senses.
Or watch some isekai slop surely you will have a "I can do much better than this shit" confidence boost.
A Place Further Than the Universe
Hibike! Euphonium
Suzume
Cosmic Princess Kaguya
Revue Starlight
The Aquatope on White Sand
Girls Band Cry
Ancient Magus Bride
Iroduku: The World in Colors
The Beast Player Erin
Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai
Bang Dream It's MyGo + Ave Mujica
Hibike Euphonium
I wouldn't really consider Madoka Magica happy. I would put it in a similar vein to Revue Starlight but darker.
Hibike! Euphonium is my favorite anime of all time, probably should have put it in the original comment.
I enjoyed Jellyfish, but I would put it below the others I've listed.
*Kuzu no Honkai* - a story about unrequited love and trying to find happiness and comfort.
*Shadow Star Narutaru* - a story about a happy, cheerful 12 year old girl pulled into a bunch of depressing, fucked up situations.
*Zenshuu* - an isekai story about a city and its fight against inevitable doom.
*Aoi Hana* - lesbians with complicated feelings.
*Shinsekai Yori* - kids growing up in a world of fucked up magic.
Also, *Kono Oto Tomare* doesn't strictly have a "female protagonist" but if you enjoyed Eupho (and you seem to enjoy music anime more broadly) you'll probably like that one as well.
How many have you checked out?
(I think I'm at 30 or 40 so far!)

Oh, interesting. I might give it a shot sooner rather than later then!

The video is both NSFW and not topical to the subreddit.
