[I actually though it wasn't going to be Nakao, but here we are.](https://i.imgur.com/C6ZLRJA.jpeg)
Sano's got quite the shiner, even if he can't remember what happened is none the wiser when Mizuki is offering to support him. Though she's still got her own worries about her feelings to deal with. Though Nanba is always there to lend an ear and flirt with her...though only jokingly. So long as he doesn't know she's a girl.
Umeda straight up has the best seat in the house to watch all this drama with the boys and the girl dressing up AS a boy.
Mizuki is starting to get bullied!? Though thank goodness she has friends who can actually read Kanji or else she'd have no idea what this was about.
Mizuki can't even talk about her big (half-)brother from another American mother without Nakao calling her out and being a hater. Is it any surprise that HE was the bully? But it's because HE likes Nanba and was jealous...and Mizuki, in her admiration and love for Sano, relates to those feelings and thinks she and Nakao can be pals. I guess that's very Mizuki. Don't dwell on the negative and just move forward with gusto.
Kagurazaka is still way too handsy with Mizuki, but he knows that and his new jumping record is enough to rile up Sano. On the plus side, Sano can finally jump over the bar again, and Mizuki is there to watch and cheer him on even through winder break.
Ah yes, Valentine's Day...a day for girls to give chocolate to the boys they like and admire. And Mizuki is on the receiving end because people think she's a girl, but she also has to watch another girl be open about her feelings to Sano. On the one hand, she wishes it was her, on the other hand...she's also happy Sano rejected the girl. Cross-dressing can be complicated.
I have to wonder about whatever guy is so twisted that Umeda was in love with him. They sound like the perfect pair.
Mizuki's big brother is coming to Japan? I'm sure he won't make her already precarious situation more messy.
The brother sent a dress as a gift, so he doesn't know about the cross-dressing. I don't think she'll confess. It would be more fun to have to spend her time avoiding other people's gaze. If he comes during the holidays, there should be fewer people around, except for Sano.
I'm surprised Kagurazaka doesn't know Mizuki is a girl. At their first meeting, he thought she was, but during the school visit, he concluded she was a boy. However, since he's so tactile and has, among other things, already carried her (like Sano)... it's surprising he didn't discover the "pink post," like Sano did.
I am also surprised that there were no reactions from Nakatsu in this episode, especially if it is the Valentine's Day period.
>And Mizuki is on the receiving end because people think she's a girl,
This was a fun episode!
It's killing me inside because I want her to tell the mini group she has that she's a girl!
\-- first kiss
\-- 3 guys decked
\-- 1 bullying arc
Mizuki unsurprisingly left flustered by that drunken kiss, even after finding out about the alcohol and concluding Sano is the type to kiss people randomly when drunk. Shame he forgot about it all and is yet to find out, would love to see his reaction.
Mizuki misreading the notes in her locker made me laugh, reminded me that even if fluent in Japanese her first language is still English. But how has she been faring in her classes all this time? (For those wondering, she didn't recognise the kanji characters and mistook them for regular katakana/hiragana characters randomly mashed together: I'll kill you 殺 -> メホルヌ, die 死ね -> ノタヒね)
Nakao the classic shoujo manga bully-turn-friend except instead of your stock mean girl he's a very jealous boy in love with the playboy senpai.
Umeda casually dropping his toxic yaoi lore.
A sudden visit from the nii-chan because of course the plot demands hijinks re: hiding your crossdressing from your unsuspecting family member + hiding you're a crossdresser from your unsuspecting classmates. A glance at the credits tells me the brother is voiced by Tachibana Shinnosuke!
She's blushing!
He tripped. And fell.
Gee I wonder who...
That's the Doc's nephew?
Who's that lurking in the shadows?
That's a lot of thumbtacks...
Oh gee you don't say...
Seems his black eye has recovered mostly.
Right. Nothing this time?
Nevermind...
So, that's her story.
So, there's the tw@ from earlier.
Gee you don't say...
Yep. And so she finally caught him in the act.
And that's why.
Oh, he overheard that bit.
Lmao he's completely ignoring her. About one step away from using one hand to hold her head while she tries to charge at him.
Ok...
Yeah that's called schadenfreude.
Oh, her brother is coming over?
Somewhat surprising number of gay people at this school. Well, it's probably a perfectly normal amount but actually seeing it in an anime is the weird part. Or maybe that's a shoujo thing I'm not used to yet.
I’m excited to see her big brother!!
At first I was into the idea, it’s a fun and silly premise. Mizuki came off as a very motivated female mc.
Then I realized she kind of just rushed the situation without taking it through. Which has its own charm.
Like when she kept getting closer to Sano and eventually, the dog pushed him over but still. What if someone had seen her? The same with when she was running away from the sports groups and then she saw him sleeping and she almost kissed him. In another series, the character would be a little more aware, but she doesn’t seem to care about the consequences despite very much caring about them
I don’t know if these are addressed better in the source material. Lastly, eps 2.5-4 with Rika and Sano. Both times she experienced to something negative with them they become the “bad guys”. Rika to Sano, and Sano is a bad guy for all the guys who are starting to fall for Mizuki. At times like this it feels like poorly written fanfiction…BUT then you get all these well-timed comedic moments. The situational setups, from womanizing characters to guys who can’t figure out if they are gay or not and it has its own charm.
So the great moments really increases the expectations in the middle of an episode, but then some of the really low ones make me judge why this was even an animated.
All that to say, I’m a sucker for a good romcom so I’m staying but if someone can clarify these things from me or tell me that the source material shows more that would be great
You'll find a lot of things "don't make sense" in older anime/manga. However, a lot of things don't make sense even in modern anime. Anime is known to just have random things and situation popping outta nowhere on the daily for characters.
Regarding the Rika/Sano situation, I'm not sure where its not clear cut. Mizuki obviously likes Sano and can relate to Rika in the fact that they both have a crush on him. Sano is clearly seen as treating Mizuki coldly, so others misunderstand him not knowing its cause Sano is the only one who's aware Mizuki is a girl.
For the Rika Sano stuff maybe I said it wrong then. I don’t think the characters in the series and people would be wrong for perceiving them negatively. But its the fact that in story Sano reacts negatively to Rika. Then the secondary characters react negatively to Sano because he made her cry or sad. My thing with this is the convenience of it. BUT the age of the series matters.
I’ve watched over 100 romcoms released after this series; meaning there’s been at least a few hundred scenarios like this before. So I’m actually watching how this was done originally before the other 100. Its the same as a shounen trope today. In 1995 it wasn’t a trope. It was just something they did. If there’s other perceptions of this series you think I should reconsider then please hit me because I want to enjoy as much as I can.
So its totally understandable if newer gen anime watchers would find the characters/storylines used in Hana Kimi very outdated, because it is.
Thanks for the clarification. I can probably enjoy the series a lot more now!
Umeda. He's lived a fun life hasn't he?
Big brother time!
Bro put 5 billion tacks in the locker, drenched the shoes, and even vandalized the desk and wasn't going to stop if they weren't caught.
I really hate the trope of forgiving them so easily and they get to be a part of the gang. It's so annoying.
