What I love about this whole scene is its portrayal of kindness.
Kindness can be small little injections in the midst of your terrible day. You do not need to be 100% to be kind, all that matters is that within all the bullshit. You find a moment to act kind.

She experiences time completely differently from the rest of the cast. A 10 year trip is a weekend getaway and six months in a village is barely visiting. This results in her, until the opening episodes, not really having attachments to either people or objects simply because they'll be gone so soon. She does form attachments and deeply cares but she still is operating under a handicap in broader society. A good portion of the show is her overcoming that and Fern overcoming her own flaws.
