Which Anime did you view as terrible when you heard about it, but got "hook on it" after giving it a try?
Personally for me it was Yugioh 5ds or Hitman Reborn. As many said i was like, "Why yugioh on Motorcycles?" However as I saw, I loved how dark it was. As for Hitman, you had Chibi characters and the the story dealt with Mafia. Seemed dumb in beginning as MC clothes would rip apart. However, a friend asked me to watch later episodes to truly enjoy and wanted to see more of anime.

It dug its talons into me just like an eagle does to a fish.
I am inside of its stomach eagerly anticipating the ~~large intestine~~ season 4.
It turned out to have secondary characters that can critically think, drama, show don't tell, a novel world, and a progressively expanding scope.
I hope season 4 will not be censored. I am scared they will skip ton of details for the next arc because it could be seen as controversial
I'd rate them GX > DM > Arc-V > Zexal S1 > 5D's > Zexal S2 >> Vrains >> Sevens > Card Chronicles >> Go Rush
5D's did take me the most tries to get into. It took me a while to get around to finishing the first arc, but I binged the rest fairly quickly.
In general, slice of life is a genre most people wouldn't know, until they do and jump in and it's for some the best invention since sliced bread.
Me and the wife started this thinking it would be fun terrible trash and ended up really liking it.
It had no business being so good lol.
Didn't view as terrible but when i read the synopsis before the anime aired, i was like "Meh".
Then found out about the game by mistake one day, put 2 and 2 together, and then decided to give the anime a try before i play the game. And now i'm hooked!! Probably one of the few anime i keep looking forward to every week since i've read the manga for most of the popular ones like JJK and Fireforce so had few anime to watch weekly.
Sword Art Online.
A girl/friend recommended the show to me ~10 years ago, I had never seen it and my entire opinion was taken from the internet "sao bad". Watched it, liked it.
I also got super sucked into Iruma-Kun after snubbing it for so long.
Back in high school, I read the title and thought, "This is everything that's wrong with anime." I finally watched it years later and it made me cry.
Easily one of my favorites.
