My Thoughts on Dusk Beyond The End of the World
This is one of the most disappointing anime I've seen in awhile. I didn't have that many expectations positively or negatively going in, but the first couple episodes were great. They provided an interesting post apocalyptic setting shrouded in the mystery of the main male character waking up from a slumber that isn't given a distinct timeframe but we're told has been active since before this adult man was alive, and while his age also isn't stated, my guess is he's in his 30s or 40s since he has a young daughter conscious of the world around her. My guess is he was asleep for at least a hundred years, but I can't say for sure. All the while we'd get fun character interactions, and some great fight scenes. Animation was slightly above average for the most part, with occasional cuts that became great. I was so into it for the first couple episodes that I was even willing to overlook the male MC's very gereric, almost Kirito esque design, especially since the other character designs were very appealing and some of them were even unique. But after that it went downhill. There'd be an interesting episode every once and while, but there were way too many sidetracks with stuff that I didn't care about like an incest side ship with a character that never appears in the present, and way too much downtime with the characters. That's not inherently bad because I like the characters, they have fun personalities and their interactions are entertaining, and this part in particular rarely becomes boring, but it's only a 12 episode show. If it was 24 episodes this would be more forgiveable, but with the short runtime I was more interested in how the world ended up the way it did. This all leads to a mediocre conclusion that leaves me with a hundred unanswered questions.
