I actually like the first Fullmetal Alchemist's Wrath, and have always felt isolated feeling like I'm the only one who did all these decades
Everything that anime Wrath represented, from his foil to Ed, his tie to sensei izumi, and his general backstory made him a compelling character for me, and I'll admit, he was absolutely adorable and a part of the appeal too.
He's introduced as this sweet child, who Izumi is drawn to to take care of with her unfulfilled maternal instinct. All the while Ed is understandably suspicious.
Then that moment when Envy turns him evil, and you're utterly heartbroken, and you just feel Izumi's pain, the combination of guilt and horror at what she created, and what she abandoned, which reflects on Wrath since he sees both of those emotions on her which further fuels his anger based hate.
His inclusion also contributed to the core theme of the first anime, about humanity's hubris, represented by the failed human transmutations, like ed and al's mum, or izumi's child.
And Wrath serving as a foil to Ed, having his arm and leg, and wanting the life Ed has, is one of my favorite tropes in not just anime but a lot of media.
And this isn't a "one is better than the other" comparison, I just really wanted to say that I really liked FMA Wrath, and it's like, almost no one else felt the same the past 20 years.
