Question about tougen anki

watching tougen anki rn, about half way through and I gotta say, Im super enjoying it. the power system is pretty damn awesome, I like the characters, the comedy makes me laugh and I even got pushed into tears at one point.
Then I thought too myself, I wonder if other ppl are enjoying it this much aswell, checked and immediately saw it getting massacred with hate in some of the comments on here.
At this point I have to sit and wonder... do I just have poor taste or is there a very vocal selection of anime watchers that go into everything prepared to hate it. lmfao.

Story is mediocre, power system is mediocre, characters are mediocre, animation & design is mediocre.
I also enjoyed it fine enough, but it's seriously nothing special, imo.
>do I just have poor taste
I don't think this is good framing. You can like things that others don't like.
Taste is personal...I don't really see the value of calling it "poor", because what metric is there?
Is your opinion worth less than another person's opinion when it's purely about how much you enjoy something?
I don't think so.
Enjoy what you enjoy. As I said, I also thought it was totally fine.
>very vocal selection of anime watchers that go into everything prepared to hate it
I mean, it's the internet. But no, I don't think those people exist. The only shows who get a lot of hate, are the most popular ones who also have the most viewers.
Nobody thinks enough about Tougen Anki to actively hate on it. And I didn't see any hate anyway.
What I saw was many people saying that it's pretty bad, which is not hate, it's just their opiinion, like how your opinion is that it's enjoyable.
There is no difference between these opinions, really..
The main thing is comparing it to anything else, like I was just thinking that saying that the animation is mediocre or the power system or whatever, is just because you have an outlook on what level something has to be to be good.
All I mean is I wish everyone could enjoy things like I do because I really enjoy it, and when I see people who aren't enjoying it I genuinely feel sad for them because they went into the show with preconceived notions on what level it has to be at to be good.
Basically nobody went into the show expecting anything. It’s not a show that any hype or expectations.
And you also have preconceived notions of what good is, otherwise you wouldn’t think this is good either.
And the enjoyment part is also fundamentally misunderstanding enjoyment.
Many people can enjoy things that are bad or mediocre.
I don’t need to lie and say that Tougen Anki is good, when it’s just mediocre (in my opinion).
But at the same time, I can enjoy watching a mediocre show just fine.
And also, enjoyment can be different. I think it’s very enjoyable to criticise things, for me, figuring out what I didn’t like about Tougen Anki is also enjoyable. I like media criticism, it’s fun.
But I don’t need a show to be good to enjoy it. I can enjoy any show for many reasons and many people actively watch e.g. bad movies, because watching bad media is also fun.
It seems like you have quite a narrow view of what „good“ is and what a series needs to he to be enjoyable.
Which again is completely understandable and not wrong.
However like I said i feel bad that you couldn't enjoy it and I wish you could have enjoyed it freely like I have been doing.
If I re watched from the beginning now and went into it with a more critical look like you enjoy too, I might not like it as much and start seeing the downfalls of the show.
Like i said I'm not trying to disprove you or anything, I just went into the show with a different mindset and I think that is why we have different opinions, and I wish you could have enjoyed it.
(Edit: I reread and realized that I said "I wish you could have enjoyed it" and that's not right, you did enjoy it in your way, what I meant is I wish you could have really got into it and enjoyed it your way as well.
And you came to your opinion by deciding the level good is and deciding it's at that level
There is no fundamental difference between my and your opinion, we just differ in the "quantity" or in the question "how good" something is (here: good vs. mediocre)
> feel bad that you couldn't enjoy it
But I did enjoy it?
>ou could have enjoyed it freely
I did enjoy it freely!
>went into it with a more critical look
I did not go into it with a critical look at all.
>I just went into the show with a different mindset
We are different people, of course we have different mindsets.
>and I wish you could have enjoyed it
just to reiterate:
I did enjoy it!
(And you came to your opinion by deciding the level good is and deciding it's at that level)
I wouldn't really say that, I enjoyed it for what it is, I wasn't thinking about what was good or bad I was just enjoying it.
I understand our mindset are different and like I said I wasn't trying to disprove you or anything.
Honestly right now it's my opinion about your opinion about my opinion about your opinion of the anime XD
your right to have your own opinion lol but I still think if you went into it with a different mindset you could have enjoyed it more on top of already enjoying it your way, that's all
Same here!
>I wasn't thinking about what was good or bad I was just enjoying it
That's a lie.
You just said:
>I enjoyed it for what it is
This means you also thought what was important for you while watching and you even said, in your post, that you, for example, enjoy the powersystem.
So you did think about what was good at least, this also means (by definition) you thought about what was bad.
I don't even think this is possible.
Like, obviously, when I hear or read or watch or experience anything, I will judge how much I enjoy it.
Isn't that simply being sentient? I don't even think I am capable of shutting that off and I don't see the point of doing it.
How do you not know whether you like or don't like something?
If you genuinely don't have that, it sounds to me like you don't think, which I do not believe.
>but I still think if you went into it with a different mindset you could have enjoyed it more
Not really. As I said: I like thinking about things and criticising media. For me, it's as fun to think about WHY the power system is mediocre as it is to watch the show.
Many people like criticising things, it's fun. Half my enjoyment of media is literally that: Thinking about what went right or wrong in any given work.
I can be critical if I want to be, I can also just sit back and enjoy watching it without being critical.
You saying "thinking about what went right or wrong in any given work." Is basically what I said you were doing is it not?
I said you went in with your critical hat on and you were picking up what was going wrong or right according to what you think is wrong or right.
Which again isn't wrong.
To repeat again all I think is the way you went in put you on the path to thinking it was mid, and you might have had a better view of the show if you watched it in a different way.
Your replies are still coming at me like I'm attempting to disprove you, I understand your opinion is your own and I understand you enjoy watching things that way, it's not wrong and you aren't wrong.
Obviously I am thinking when I watch it, but I'm not trying to think negatively and I think that's why I have a view of the show that's more favourible
So you were thinking about the power system.
You are describing how you're thinking about the power system.
What you did is: Think about the power system.
>I can be critical if I want to be, I can also just sit back and enjoy watching it without being critical.
Being critical does not mean thinking something is bad.
Criticism can also mean saying something is good.
>basically what I said you were doing is it not?
>I said you went in with your critical hat on
It's not, because these thoughts are too basic for that.
I can also criticise an anime, but in this instance, I just watched the show once in a week. That is not even enough watch time to be critical.
This is just what "watching something" is.
If you are sentient, you don't just see colours and hear sounds. Those colours and sounds mean something.
And if you are sentient, I don't think it's possible to not think about how these colours and sounds affect you.
This is what you do as well, for example when you said that the power system had cool abilities.
>To repeat again all I think is the way you went in put you on the path to thinking it was mid
This is simply not true, as I have said multiple times already.
Whether you believe me or not...I don't care. But please stop repeating something that isn't true, at least not in written messages.
>and you might have had a better view of the show if you watched it in a different way
Or I might think it is worse, because I lost all the fun I had thinking about how mediocre it is!
I think this would happen. I would enjoy it way less.
>Your replies are still coming at me like I'm attempting to disprove you
You are. By repeatedly claiming that I had this or that thought going in (something you cannot know about me and that isn't true), you are directly saying that I am wrong in what I say.
You are saying to me: "Don't lie, I know you started watching it thinking it would be mid."
But this is simply not true.
I don't know how else to tell you this.
>Obviously I am thinking when I watch it, but I'm not trying to think negatively and I think that's why I have a view of the show that's more favourible
And my view of the show is even more favourable, because I can tell you all the ways in which it's mediocre or bad, which is just way more interesting and thus fun than just thinking something is enjoyable.
Criticisng something is simply more fun than not criticising something. It's way more entertaining and enjoyable.
I wasn't thinking about the power system "other than" wow that powers cool, I wasn't trying to find holes in it which is why I came out with good and you came out with mid.
I didn't say you started watching thinking it was mid, I said you started watching prepared to criticize (which you enjoy to do) and that's why you found it to be mid.
Saying your view of the show is favourable because you can say how it's bad also makes no sense.
Your view of the show is mid like you said at first, you enjoying it because you could criticize it is different.
You have told me multiple times that you enjoy criticizing and it's more fun than not doing it, so you clearly go into things with that aspect in mind.
Then you said it isn't enough time to even be critical, so you came to the point of deciding the anime was mid (a criticizing thing to say) in not enough time to be critical?
What are you even saying anymore man...
I was saying that your way of enjoying it is totally valid but now you have just lost me in the sauce lmao
Setting aside that they said they enjoyed it: Kind of a condescending thing to say. That's like if I said I feel bad that you have such little discernment when it comes to quality you'll never be able to fully appreciate a really good anime. You don't have to "feel bad" for someone not being as enthusiastic about a show as you are. We're all very much fine with our level of enjoyment.
And honestly I don't see any issue in you thinking that way about me, you're in your own right to do that.
I did say that I understand that it's his own way of enjoying it, what I was saying is I think going into it with a less critical mind is why I thought it was great, and the reverse that going into it with a more critical mind is why he thought it was mediocre.
I'm not trying to disprove anyone or be condescending I am just genuinely feeling bad that he didn't feel as impacted by it like I did lol.
Also he went to the front line and left all the students to help in the support squad healing ppl and stuff, so I don't really think its weird
It just feels so copy paste from Naruto. Shunned trouble maker has a really strong power that goes out of control, there's a really edgy prodigy with family trauma and a vendetta against a family member, and pink girl are tested by their teacher in a way where only two of them are supposed to be able to pass and the third gets expelled.
I'm just sat there like.. are we watching the same thing? Because that was awesome. Lmfao
And also, I don't like CGI (my taste)
I've watched only 3 eps.
Lucky for you if you liked it. I can't really pass through the CGI 😭 but maybe one day I'll re try
It's PEAAAAK
In case you didn't know,
The first season was released in 2011 if I remember well, and the manga wasn't following. So they made an end only for season 1.
Season 2 was released in 2017 or 2020. This one follows the real manga storyline. So you have to link episode 1 season 2 after the ep 17 season 1.
But then 10 years later they made the season 2 to follow the manga s storyline
It was confusing at first but understandable
Like in a bad way.
Happily the story was so interesting that I could see beyond it.
Other ppl def bash it alot for sure but irdc if they feel that way tbh I just ignore it
If you enjoy it just enjoy it lol I’ve definitely had takes about certain characters, but I get on here and it’s a completely different majority opinion 😅
What’s an anime you dislike? And why?
The antagonists are also comically villainy to the point where you're just rooting for them to lose anyway, and the fights are nowhere close because the good guys get a power-up.. by having different philosophies? One guy was willing to die for the thrill of the fight and the good guy was like "never give up, not even your life" and then the good guy won. And the MC is just a guy who wants to get strong then turns super saiyan and obliterating any obstacle.
The other cast members aside from the main ones are just reduced to one-liners of saying whatever pertains to their personality, so they might as be filler characters.
The show is fine if you don't try to analyze the world-building of stories. Because if you watch a lot of anime shows, this anime is as generic of a shonen as it gets. Idk about the hate, but I'd just assume they don't like the story for somewhat similar reasons as I.
Especially the latter half. The umbrella dude was the only likable part of the show to me by the end. Maybe you’ll end up enjoying it, this is just my opinion after all.
