The ending is pure sadness, she is 16 and for the first time in her life, someone cares for her.
Usodearu0072026-01-26 14:32
\[csm movie spoilers\]>!she had so many opportunites to end him and at the end she still asked him to come with her before carrying her mission after his refusal. the first time a girl truly cared for denji.!<
elmagio2026-01-26 18:51
FWIW it's heavily implied that [CSM Reze Spoilers]>!when Reze suggests they leave together while watching the fireworks, she's luring Denji into a trap. It's only at the very end of the movie, when she chooses to go back for him at the café, that she is actually genuine in wanting to run away with him.!<
Usodearu0072026-01-26 18:58
\[csm movie spoilers\]>!when she thought about why she didnt try to kill him earlier when she had so many opportunities to do so, that was what made me thought that her invitation was perhaps genuine.. she was giving him one last chance but denji "choosing" Makima instead of her was the last straw.!<
pipboy_warrior2026-01-26 14:23
I love how Reze is pretty explicit in explaining to Denji how he's being used and not being treated well. Dude is happy with food and shelter, and Reze is explaining how that's the bare minimum in Japan.
Ordinal43NotFound2026-01-26 14:42
Another interpretation for that scene is that Reze is also self-projecting her own predicament.
pipboy_warrior2026-01-26 14:46
Oh definitely, she says as much in the ending that she didn't get to go to school either.
Lapiz_lasuli2026-01-27 00:25
It doubles for Denji too. His whole thing so far is fulfilling basic human needs. The percises emphasis on his "body acting on it's own" is his conflicting sexual desire, emotional vulnerability and the want for actual love.
Denji is not equppied to handle what any of this means, not in his current state at least.
Haytaytay2026-01-26 20:17
I really appreciate how Denji's lack of family, education, and friends is taken seriously.
His suffering didn't make him stronger, it just made him easier to manipulate.

Bro, that’s a spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. You should’ve at least used a spoiler tag

Man, I love the voice acting work in Fujimoto's adaptations.
The characters just sounded sooo natural like everyday people talking.
Reze's "Nanja sorya?" with her little voice crack is just hnnngggg

School is about that one asshole [changing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_fXYnB5HM4) in the middle of class in front of everyone and you rubbing one out incognito and being **too preoccupied** with your own good feeling to care about all the commotion.
