I've been looking for some good particularly, dark, gritty and horrific anime that feature villains straight out of a Lovecraftian horror story. Basically villains that are different from Battle Shonen antagonists that require comprehensible motivations and the ability for the heroes to understand their given perspective and opposing worldview even if not condoned.

At first I thought that the villain design constraint stemmed from the popular yet superficial belief that "Attractive villains sell better than ugly/grotesque ones" only for me to realize that the real reason stems from thematic factors given Battle Shonen's themes of hope and perseverance require understanding of different perspectives for philosophical growth and villains who evoke pure dread and despair with ambiguous/incomprehensible motivations clash with these type of themes.

The commercial constraint becomes even less relevant considering the fact that villains with completely frightening and inhuman designs such as the God Hand, and Apostles from Berserk, Junji Ito's most hideous creations and Devilman's Amon and demons have sold countless figures and collectibles that make the actual constraints thematic rather than commercial.

I'm looking for anime narratives where the villain embraces a traditionally evil aesthetic, uses coercion and intimidation to force compliance into their allies, represent a force of pure dread and have motivations that aren't spoon fed to audiences forcing them to figure them out on their own, focusing on the limits of human understanding.

Some of the most popular examples of anime that feature these types of antagonists include Berserk, Blood C, Parasyte the Maxim, Devilman, Dororo Remake, and Gantz, but I want to know if you have any particular recommendations that would fit my given description?
