What’s an anime everyone told you you’d love, but you absolutely didn’t?
I’m a big Gintama fan, so people kept recommending Grand Blue to me for the comedy. I watched it expecting something similar, and sadly I found it painfully unfunny and cringe.
Curious to know if others had a similar experience with an anime everyone swears you’ll love.

Blue exorcist
My hero acadamia
He also tried to sell me on Dragonball anything and Solo Leveling, but I don’t like male power fantasy in anime so neither have ever appealed to me to even give it an episode of my attention. Idk if these count though.
Your lie in April
Dangers in my heart
( your lie in April I agree was kinda alright )
And the side plot that had been nagging me cuz I was like why the fuck does this keep popping up until the very end but I didn’t enjoy it
Your lie in April pissed me off
First season 1 is definitely slow and aimless
Almost like SOL
But 2nd season is where it gets really good, or rather from the end of S1 onwards
Conceptually it’s not a masterpiece of originality but the execution of the characters and how well realized they were just made it so gripping
Especially Nagisa’s parents
There’s a really wholesome melancholic and beautiful atmosphere to the show
It felt innocent but dark
The family themes and adolescence journey just really connected with me
Maybe you weren’t in right headspace for it, or it just doesn’t resonate with you
I will say, I waited for a time where I felt mentally free if that makes sense
Like I wanted a show that sapped all my emotions so I’m sure that helped the show a lot
I do agree with the sub plot being just “???”
It felt disjointed and confusing with no subtle hints or nods to give you a chance of understanding it even a lil
And even when the “big thing” happened with the sub plot I was just left confused..
Happy that it happened but confused
Another part. They look like bugs. Like im sorry and the hair pieces with the eye size make it look like antennae. Nagisa also sounds like a child and it was off putting.
I think it branched off into too many things.
Cuz the Mc struggled with his family and helps all these girls with their own issues
Okay he settled on nagisa
And then it’s about life and family etc but no it’s actually inter-dimensional. And then there was that episode where a dude was like actually a cat. Idk it had its moments but I was really disappointed.
At the very least they made the at subplot mean SOMETHING but at the same time it’s just symbolism but I don’t remember if it really explained why that was even really there? Kinda? Idk
I’ve seen so many romance animes now so I know what speaks to me and what doesn’t and these just weren’t it
I can respect some people love it - I am not one of them
I watched similar animes with the cliche isekai hero format but among all of them I really loved Cautious Hero because it absolutely blindsided me when I first watched it, it's pretty short I'd say but a very fun one. ( I really like how they approached the ending). Also friends kept recommending Mushoku tensei but I don't like rudeus lol
Black Clover, Attack On Titan, Re: Zero, Code Geass
I've heard the show gets more into the war in part 2, and I'm sure I'll get to it someday and maybe change my opinion, but me not giving a shit about these LN archetypes is going to be really hard to overcome. I actively didn't give a shit when any of the 86 died.
I kept hearing that this is better than My Hero Academia, but I disagree completely. I find the action a lot more janky and the character interactions repetitive and annoying.
It was visually impressive, but I was completely unable to connect or care about any of the characters.
Aside from the main girl, I don’t care for any of the characters. David was about as uninteresting as they came and I felt nothing him.
I also think that the anime is set prior to the game anyways, so I doubt playing it would have changed my opinion.
I think the only character that I felt bad about what happened was David's Mom. And in a way, I feel like that made David that much more unlikeable.
Madoka Magica
Lycoris Recoil
My friends were incredibly wrong.
Cyberpunk - depressing.
JJK s1 just didn't hit me. I barely remember anything from it.
It did have pretty mixed reception amongst anime viewers which pleased me to know that I’m not crazy.
Coming off of hidden inventory ( which I thought was INCREDIBLE👌), this arc was just dudes throwing each other around for 18 episodes straight and that’s it
