What anime should I introduce my 52 year old step dad with?
I am looking for an anime to introduce my very country minded step-dad to anime. I feel like the standard starter series (naruto, one piece, bleach, etc.) Wouldn't really go over as well. Any suggestions??

Heck, my mum loved season two!
Other safe anime movies include “In this corner of the world” and “Millennium actress”
Other than thatFull metal alchemist is a pretty good stater
Series Wise:
Fruits Basket can be melodramatic but full of heart. It does have a slight fantasy twist in the Soma family, but it isn’t much more than a trigger for all the drama/trauma.
The Original Full Metal Alchemist anime (2003) is less action packed. Most “fight” scenes are over in 15 seconds it feels like. It is more heavily fantasy, but it deals with some fairly dark themes.
Silver Spoon is a good slice of life anime that might hit right. Not too much drama and such if I recall, but slice of life anime usually tend to be comedic or rather “everyday” life.
Movie wise:
Your Name (or any of that director’s works) could be a good call. Most have a fantasy/sci fi angle but little in terms of action and most of the conflict is interpersonal.
Is your father into comedies at all? Anime has a fairly diverse comedy scene.
Rather than anime all together, he might prefer something like Korean/CN palace dramas - that is the real soap opera shit. And maybe Apothecary Diaries if he ends up liking that as a gateway to anime.
Honestly might not be a bad place to start with either the OG Gundam, or one of the more recent iterations depending on how important visuals are to him.
Maybe go for some sports focused anime, while avoiding the unrealistic elements (I’m looking at you *Blue Lock*). Try:
- Giant Killing
- Haikyuu
- Diamond no Ace
- Hajime no Ippo
- Ping Pong
- Salaryman’s Club
If you want something very fanciful, but focused on American football, then *Eyeshield 21*. But he’ll definitely find that one a cartoonish derivation of the sport
It's just thirsty and kinky af.
Lesbian middle school girl rape is not something I'd refer to as good.
Psycho pass
Somethings like thar
I'm a long anime watcher in my 40s and this is my #1 pick for a into. Good story telling, complete anime, no fan service.
I wouldn't recommend anything ongoing for a newbie.
I also use Erased (anime not live action) as a true starter. 8 episodes.
If either is too long the Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, or Your Name are great movies with a wide appeal.
Have fun with it!
What mainstream media does he like?
If he likes old shows like Bewitched or I dream of Jeannie, I'd recommend [**Hinamatsuri**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinamatsuri_(manga))instead of magic, the girl uses telekinesis. Instead of a husband like Darrin, she has a father-figure like Nitta who wants to keep her powers secret.
Another one he may like is [**ReLife](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReLIFE) a family-friendly slice of life show. The link will tell you more.
If he likes comedy and adventure, there's always [**KonoSuba**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KonoSuba).
My stepfather was an illiterate hillbilly from Hazard, KY. Ifvit had naked women, he'd watch it. If your stepdad is like that, he'll enjoy [**Interspecies Reviewers**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interspecies_Reviewers) about a group of adventurers that rate brothels in another world.sorry, this one doesn't have a dub. I don't know how he is about reading subtitles.
Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu
Legend of Galactic Heroes (space opera)
Spice and Wolf (period drama, romance)
Macross (space opera, romance, music)
Pluto (sci-fi, detective mystery, political thriller)
Someone else can recommend some sports anime.
Full Metal Alchemist.
I've heard that Bill Burr watched 2 episodes of Onepunchman and liked it.
Paprika
Akira
Summer Wars
Howls.Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
Kimi no nawa
There's a good chance he has seen this already but if he hasn't, I highly suggest Heavy Metal. Its an animated (not anime) movie from the 80's with a rock soundtrack that definitely speaks to a dad. Top notch animation, based off the sci fi magazine of the same name.
Also Demon Slayer and JJK but I wouldn’t start with those. If I had to pick only one it would be Frieren. Or Oshi No Ko if he’s into intrigue.
For themes mid life adults might enjoy: Hinamatsuri, Clannad, Odd Taxi
And darker: Happy Sugar Life, Made in Abyss, Mardock Scramble
For what might seem like a standard Netflix series: Erased, Oshi no Ko, Orb: On the Movement of the Earth
All-in-all, as a dude in his 40s, I would recommend Erased (murder mystery / time travel) or Hinamatsuri (comedy / about a girl with telekinesis who ports into the home of a Yakuza mob boss).
Cowboy Bebop is the best gateway drug out there for most people.
But Evangelion is a great one to show how unique an experience anime can be. It's what hooked me .
That said what ever you do not start with some 1000 ep Shonen.
If he watches biking shows: Vinland Saga
If he likes cop procedural: Maybe Psycho Pass or Pluto
If he likes Rocky or boxing: Megalo Box
Basically, you want to find something he already likes and find something similar as an entry way.
It doesn't need to be this way all the time. But for people who may be more apprehensive to watching "cartoons", you have to start them with what they know.
It plays a lot like a western TV show, there's no weird anime bullshit like flashing panties or something, it doesn't have any hugely exaggerated expressions and the story is very mature and grounded in reality.
In my opinion it's the perfect gateway drug to anime, especially for older people, to show them anime isn't just weird anime things.
More recently I have added Violet Evergarden to my list of recommendations though. Also very clean and serious, and a very touching story on top of that.
I've been watching anime for over forty years and there may have been a bit of a "standard" starter pack in the past but only because there were so few to choose from, now you have so many it's great to be able to pick and choose the ones that best match what the person likes.
This is what I do when introducing anyone to anime because there shouldn't be a "standard" or "one size fits all" starter pack as what I like and what you like may be completely different.
Also...One Piece is fun and all but I'd never put an anime with that many episodes in a "starter" pack in case you scare people off with the numbers 😹😅
I first watched it at 51. It was amazing, because I'd been a son, a young man, a father, etc. I understood the boy and his dad completely
Vinland saga
Chi. Chikyuu no Undow ni Tsuite
Death note may work
Attack on titan may work too!
Try GANGSTA by Kohske
I showed it to my dad like 10 years ago and he was interested
