Have never watched the second season of Tawawa, can't imagine going from Pinejam to Cloudhearts without a downgrade.
[](#slowgrin)
[](#whippersnappers)
Wondering if I just slot that into one of my quieter days as a seasonal
[](#hardthink)
[](#mugiwait)
Does sound up my alley!
Well, at least now I don't have to find time for it.
The side cast were given development instead of simply being an ornament to the main couple, but without overshadowing the latter.
The drama also isn't contrived and one major plot point was foreshadowed several episodes in advance.
It's a shame the batch release model resulted in the series not making as much noise in this sub.
And yeah batch releases just kill any hype...

Going by MAL/episode karma, apparently no one else liked it, but I thought Arne was pretty decent! (just one episode in so far)
If anyone is considering it, I STRONGLY advise going in blind. That's my one regret, [The Case Book of Arne]>!I read the synopsis and looked at the picture and all that so I kinda knew there was some shenanigans happening! !<
If I do manage to check out all these seasonals (and not lag behind on anything) it might be to the top of my list!
(according to me. Or at least one of the)
Also, alas, neither is anywhere as good as the original. Alternative has one strong episode, but that's the most I can recommend on those two.
I forgot to mention yesterday but there are a few OVA episodes as well with the 2003 style to them (and presumably the same production staff), although I can't recall if they actually came out in that year.
Fumoffu does have more of the tsundere humor which I'm not a big fan of either, but a lot of the comedy comes from Sousuke applying his military mindset to "normal" life and causing chaos as a result - which was always hilarious to me.
Well there's still the Japan Academy Film Prize, Producers Guild of America Awards as confirmed nominations and likely future nominations on enthusiasm platforms like the Crunchyroll awards and the 2026 r/anime awards.
Anyway I have to wonder what exactly was the endgame of these Demon Slayer accolades was? Slap a large fee on licensing it for streaming? Put out a cinema re-run a so you can "pay tribute"?
But I swear if this still ends up higher on the karma chart than Bean Counter, there's no justice. It even managed to beat Tamon-kun iirc and that's just ridiculous.
Wanda and Kabo are still adorable together. Not sure if this is considered a romance series or not, but their interactions certainly give it the feel of one, which makes it a nice lead-in to all of the romance anime I'll be (re)watching in February and March.
[](#justright)
Similar to season 1 for me in that I liked it in the earlier parts more than I did latter. I really enjoyed the flashback episodes up through the Mechamaru and the early subway stuff and then it gets pretty hit or miss for me. Mostly regarding the actual battles. I did like that they upped the stakes and we got some character deaths and the good guys took a beating.
Looking forward to season 3 but hoping there is break from the seasons losing steam for me.
Most of JJK to me is "stuff is just happening" with very little sense of importance to it.
Choso vs Yuji is one of the greatest anime fights of all time, the show is gorgeous and engaging to watch, and it has some incredibly emotional moments from time to time but as a work of art I think it's a little shallow.
Overall I think you kind of captured it though. It does all feel kind of random and shallow at times.
I tend to be very much a one show at a time watcher, though I'll usually take breaks between seasons and also if I'm not currently in the mood for whatever I was watching I'll go to something else rather than forcing myself to finish a show first.
I'm currently watching [these](https://files.catbox.moe/fscvmt.png).
Basically, if I look at the shows I'm currently watching and don't really feel like any of them right that moment, I'll just start a new show instead of forcing myself. But of course every now and then I get really hooked on one show and binge it all in a couple of nights.
if i do watch an older show, i don't like to binge because i tend to forget things if i watch too many episodes in a row; it ends up being one or two episodes a day, and as a result if something goes into the crypt of my backlog it rarely makes it to the surface
I have a lot of shows on the go but some go months without progress than might get multiple eps in one day or slowly get chipped away.
[](#papithumbsup)
Also sorry for forgetting to do this last week. I was super busy last Tuesday and it just slipped my mind entirely. [](#sillyme)
And no worries! I watched last week's episode pretty soon after it came out - sadly not a whole lot of Uchi in it though.
**You and Idol Precure** didn’t get a legal stream in the UK
[](#morecomfy)
it made me realize just how much dialogue in anime is superfluous; you can get a lot just from facial/body expressions and context
she looks out the window at her bike with a worried face, gets a lock, secures her bike, and gives this look of relief
not a word said out loud, but a lot was implicitly said about how much she's grown attached her bike and the freedom it represents, and in general it's a big departure from the girl she used to be who wouldn't even bother heating up her lunch before eating it
Contrast that with her role in Tamon as a fangirl who strives to make her idol have a better life when he's off-work.
I've also noticed that starting from episode 2, it seems that the character designer, Yuka Abe (阿部 由佳), stopped being credited as the Chief Animation Director in the OP. Judging from the end credits for Episodes 2 and 3 it seems that the Animation Director, Takashi Nishikawa (西川 鷹司), will be taking over that role. Although if the end credits for episode 3 is anything to go by, Nishikawa won't always be doing it alone, as Junji Tanaka (田中 淳次) was credited alongside them for that role.
Regardless, it seems Nishikawa has a lot on their plate now, having worked on all 3 episodes so far as an episode director and key animator, while also working as an editor on the show (編集). Nishikawa isn't working solo on any of these roles, but it still feels like a lot for a single person. [](#spinning)
Also, the animation producer (producer that leads and assembles the main staff) on the "High School! Kimengumi" remake is Naoki Ishihara (石原 直樹) who previously worked at the studio Geek Toys before it merged with its parent company. The last show Ishihara worked on there was "Liar Liar", which had it's first 4 episodes outsourced to NAMU animation; so the same company that did episodes 1-3 of the "Kimengumi" remake. I dunno if that means anything, but it's interesting nonetheless. [](#harukathink)

*Ikoku Nikki* is something truly special. **Projected score 9-10**
I love *Oshi no Ko*, and I really love the dark foreboding vibe of s3 so far! Enjoying it a lot. Best OP of the season, hands down! **8-10**
I sometimes feel like I'd need to do a spreadsheet to keep track of all the masters, servants, not-quite-servants and other factions in play, but *Fate/strage Fake* is some of the coolest damn action I've seen in a long, long time! And unlike some other shows \**coughsentencedcough*\*, the whole battle royale aspect makes every single fight feel intense and high-stakes. **8-9**
*Frieren* is Frieren. It's great. Nothing spectacular so far this season, but Frieren is Frieren. **8+**
*Wash it All Away* is my dark horse of the season and I'll defend this show against all the haters. Just pure comfy bliss every single minute. **8**
*Tamon-kun* surprised me so much with just how freaking *funny* it is! None of the guys have really been my type so far (shoujo male love interests so rarely are), but Utage is pretty great and her dynamic with the guys is a lot of fun, and the show's just been a really good time. **8**
*Polar Opposites* is really well made and a lot of fun too. I'm not quite as high on the show as some others seem to be -- the high schooler-y feels maybe a little too realistically childish to my current mindset, or something? -- but it's a good show, no doubt. **7-8**
*Sentenced to be a Hero* is not bad, but endless combat against faceless random bugs gets old fast, and what little actual story we've seen has been very meh. It's almost like watching a video game where the players kill countless random mobs. Still, pretty entertaining. **6-7**
*Scum of the Brave* is by no means a fantastic show, but I'm having a surprisingly good time watching it. It's an interesting contrast to Sentenced to be a Hero: clearly done on a shoestring budget, but the characters are actually fun to watch, and it's making the best of what it's got. **6-7**
*Rom-Com with Childhood Friends* is trash in every sense of the word, yet I keep watching it, and I have no regrets about it. I dunno what to say. **4-6**
*Yuri Android Sexbot* is beyond commentary. **???**
I'll take everyone's word for it that there's a good story behind *Mayonaka Heart Tune*, but the production is so distractingly awful to me, nothing about it works. Three episodes in and I can't even tell what the different girls' personalities are, because they all seemingly share the same single expression and literally no body movement. I just can't keep watching. Shame. **dropped**
*Holy Grail of Eris* didn't do it for me. Every character acts like such a comic book villain I can't really take the world seriously, and the cheerful "cookie cutter 2020s anime" artstyle doesn't at all fit the intrigue and scheming. I might get back to this show later, but I wouldn't bet on it. **dropped**

So many good shows, though! What a great season!
[](#squee)
Oh, right. Nevermind.
You're not going to convince people on Reddit or IRL that they don't like something they like. So don't bother trying.
Not even Rent-a-Girlfriend and One Punch Man S3 has this kind of downvotes.
That's so mathematically beautiful
[](#awe)
Also, [never knew one could tell that way](https://i.imgur.com/XqtBJHY.jpeg).
[](#thoughtful)
They don't make them like this anymore...
[](#whippersnappers "Nostalgia posting about a series that aired like 6 years ago")
[](#overwhelmed)
I don't think I have much to say about the sequels (Torture is still cute, Frieren is still Frieren, etc), so here's my impression of the new shows ordered from still watching to AOTS contender that I will come back to once I have the time to catch up again:
- **The Case Book of Arne** - I'm here for the girl with a vampire fetish that's off-putting to vampires and the funny German names.
- **Sentenced to be a Hero** - This show is effects animation flexing above all else and that's... pretty cool. The concept of what heroes in its world are is nice, on paper, but the character writing feels very by the numbers so far and I can't say I'm impressed on that front.
- **Android-fucking yuri** - what am I supposed to say? It is what it is and decently good at it, with just a smidge of concerningly invasive data collection on the side [](#lesbians)
- **Tamon-kun** - Hilarious execution of an over the top romcom premise about an idol otaku becoming her oshi's housekeeper that plays with the dichotomy between person and persona. All around a good time, and it shows some genuine promise as far as relationship growth between both leads' genuine selves goes.
- **You and I are Polar Opposites** - I almost didn't try this one because the PV (and it adapting a Jump+ serialization) gave me the impression its comedy would be grating and fluffy romcoms rarely do it for me, but now I'm glad I didn't skip it. Incredibly endearing leading couple with great chemistry through how they draw out more of each others' perspectives.
- **Destiny/weird Forgery** - I have faith in Narita, and as expected the cast here is a wild bunch. Additionally, its character designs and animation are my favorite among all Fate/ things I've seen by far.
- **Ikoku Nikki** - This is the caliber of deeply empathic, nuanced and plain human drama that comes along maybe once in a few years. Every line and every directing choice is well-considered, and it emotionally wrecks me.
- **Shiboyugi** - And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, you have a death game series that's defined by its visual excesses and eccentricities. It's not a perfect series, nor do I think it will have nearly as much staying power as Ikoku Nikki, but it's symbolic of something that means even more to me: potential. Specifically, the potential to impress modest productions in the current anime industry still have with bold boarding and art direction.
Far as Channel 4 goes right now I would say their streaming is falling into the same problem as many ad supported streaming services: there's no ads to support it (for some genres at least a car or home appliance company tends to be the sponsor) which makes it difficult to afford streaming only programming. *Lazarus* was part of an Adult Swim package deal (I guess things like Rick and Morty helped dull the monotony of live-action US sitcoms over on E4) which was terminated last year (swallowed back into a HBO Max which will apparently launch in March).
I'd love to say it was ebb and flow stuff as I recall hearing Channel 4 showed anime in the early 90s in the early hours and then there was nothing terrestrial (things like Alfed J. Kwak were on but country of origin was not emphasised int he same way) until the Pokemon boom that brought along other "kids stuff" (and erm [Strange Dawn](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2002-01-21/strange-dawn-begins-airing-in-the-uk); that English dub was gaijin talent and partly lost media) and that faded away too. With how established streaming platforms are nowadays I'm not sure there's much flow back.
Pop also shut its television broadcast channel last month (they have a FAST feed now - despite the acronym these are slow to load so not fun to channel hop). This did start out as cable/satellite only but had been freeview for years. As a kids channel that and its sister channels had various anime over the 2 decades though last I checked their anime was whittled down to Pokemon Journeys (but if their presence on Pluto is anything to go by Pokemon is a separate FAST channel).
Many LN concepts are only good for a single arc which is covered by the the first volume, so it's the material immediately *after* that volume that sets the tone for how the majority of the series will go. Often it's a return to the status quo with the characters failing to follow up from the end of the previous episode. Sometimes it's starting a new arc that sends the characters on a tangent.
However it goes, the writing has taken a turn for the worse and it's clear that they're stalling and refusing to advance the main plot. That's when you know the author of the novels didn't know how to handle their story past its initial premise so it's going to keep meandering for as long as they can think of ways to extend it for a paycheck.
I'm calling it +1 because it's not always three episodes for the first volume even if that's regularly the pace, so it could be four or five episodes before you get past it. The idea of the three episode rule has plenty of issues in its own right, this is one attempt to amend an aspect of it.
[](#protest)
Silent Witch was [it's a mystery so this reveals in what episode will they tell you whodunit] >!4 episodes!< for volume 1.
I don't know what's typical because I don't read many novels at all. But not none, obviously.
Ah, when the author didn't expect they'd have to write a sequel.
For example, when Narita wrote his first Baccano! novel, he told a complete story and didn't expect it to become a series. When he got the offer to make it a series, he just wrote a new story about a mostly different set of characters on a train, and people loved it.
Or for a funnier case, when Kanzaka was told that his comedy adventure novel, Slayers, would become a series, the next entry he wrote was a campy political horror. The anime understandably skipped it for the most part, but that's the kinda messing around I love to see.
The fact that they're not shackled to continuing what came before is what makes them work so well for me.
I need to get back to the Baccano! novels though, still plenty of those to go through.
*1 billion sales and a Pulitzer*
[](#awe)
I do understand what you are saying, as many authors's main ideas are in volume 1, and they don't really get around to expanding until they start volume 2.
To get through a volume of content in a light novel extremely varies. Usually the average is 3 or 4 vols per cour these days. There is a lot of uncertainty. (As I have read some more LNs, I really feel that going beyond 3 volumes in a cour will run into a ton of issues. Hell, if a series is dense like Silent Witch, even 3 can be too much.) As one example, 86, which in its first cour adapted 1 volume in the first cour.
With light novel adaptations, there are more creative ways to adapt it than with a manga, as the translation between Novel -> Anime is wider than Manga -> Anime. I don't think there is a simple number you can illustrate to it like with manga.
Ultimately, I believe people should go with their gut. These are shows I dropped this season.
* Dark Moon: The Blood Altar -> 1 Episode
* A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans -> 3 episodes
* The Daily Life of a Part-time Torturer -> 1 episode
Granted, it is more of a coincidence that I dropped the 2nd one in 3 episodes. It could have been 2 or 4.
Though I would argue the 3-episode rule is bad practice. If an episode is horrifically bad, why would I give it another shot? Sometimes a show will simply not suit our interests.
I dropped Dragon Maid on episode 2 my first time I watched it. I came back to it this year and loved it. Sometimes our tastes also evolve.
Agreed, for the majority of shows I get a good sense of how I'll likely feel about it before the first episode is done and it's rare that I'm wrong or genuinely uncertain. This is more making an observation about the practice for those that generally follow it.
i ask this because if you end up with 3+2 for a 12 ep show, you're basically watching half of it just to see if you like it enough to keep watching. which seems to be missing the point of a mechanism to drop shows before wasting a ton of time on them. i believe thats the intention of the 3 ep rule, anyway.
I'm not saying "watch four episodes instead of three" but for the people that *do* think the three episode concept is worthwhile there's more to consider beyond that as a hard and fast rule.
thanks for the clarification!
- The second book problem you often see in series where the author *did* have a plan for sequels, where book 2 is unusually weak because book 1 was written so it could work standalone (but with natural hooks for sequels) and book 2 suffers because it has to do the rest of the setup work for later books that was left out of book 1 so that that book could work standalone. (I usually call this the Chamber of Secrets Problem, after a certain popular non-anime example.)
- The phenomenon traditionally known to Anglophone webcomic readers of a certain age as Cerebus Syndrome, wherein an initially parodic work gradually runs out of jokes, gets serious, and turns into a straight example (or semi-straight example, ala Order of the Stick) of what it is parodying.
These have different timeframes - a Chamber of Secrets Problem case will, naturally, have its weak arc be whatever corresponds to the second book, whereas Cerebus Syndrome cases may have a more gradual decline for 2-4 more LNs rather than a clear falloff from LN2 on. If you want a good example of an LN Chamber of Secrets case, look no further than Haruhi - Sigh is the weakest arc of the source material, even before KyoAni gave it an unusually uninspired/unambitious adaptation[1]. (Likewise, while I've never actually gotten around to 86 by rep I strongly suspect it's another CoS case.) For a Cerebus case I'd point to Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu, which is firmly a sentai parody at its core and is at its strongest in the material corresponding to the first LN, but rather than fall off immediately the jokes taper off over the rest of the adapted material (with episode 11 in particular suffering from playing one scene far too seriously).
(Also note that the kind of fall-off you describe is by no means limited to LNs - it's a common issue in manga as well, just with less defined timing. Romance manga *love* to do this adding new romantic rivals, to such an extent that I consider "sudden romantic rival in a non-harem work at a point where previous obstacles to the main couple getting together are resolved" a red flag and grounds for a drop. Likewise the Yu Yu Hakusho "go battle shounen and/or tournament arc" gambit isn't particularly uncommon - Negima gets a pass since by all accounts Ken Akamatsu wanted to write a battle shounen from the start and pulled the YYH gambit to get it past his editor, but I have my hunches on why Frieren has a tournament arc (though that one is arguably also a CoS case!) and going towards battle shounen after the point where the mangaka ran out of ideas is why I eventually dropped [meta ecchi]>!MahoAko!< in both manga and anime form.)
(Hell, you'll occasionally see this sort of thing in originals too - though in Mecha-Ude's case I think the issue was one part "episode 4 was the point where they overshot what the original short had covered" to three parts "there *was* a plan, but it was for two cours and they only got one".)
[1] - Say what you will about Endless Eight, but that arc's adaptation did not lack for ambition. The ambition may have been trolling the production committee after it had pissed them off (they will admit it if so because Japan, but I have Suspicions), but ambition it had nonetheless!
[](#rengethink)
Meanwhile I didn't notice Love through a Prism in the previous weeks (but what does a show view count as; things like JJK S3 and Frieren S2 suggests one ep would count).
Well, [ask no more](https://x.com/ai21_react19/status/2016239506639224964)
[](#smugobi)
[](#seasonalpout)
Edit: and to have another connection with an airing show this season, one of the few characters that can give Aquasteed Marinforest a running for most nonsensical character name is Chateau Dankworth from the rival assassin enemies-to-lovers(?) series Koroshi Ai. I gave this one four episodes before dropping it when it aired back in 2022 but it feels a lot longer than... four years? Okay never mind it's been a while.
[](#ptsd)
Apparently they made a dub so I'll give that a shot, seems like it might be appropriate for the characters.
Osalove, apparently. I don't know how many people would actually know what you were talking about if you referred to it like that though.
I want to say that as with the original Urusei Yatsura it's going at a slower pace so they can give scenes more time, like with Ranma and Akane eating burgers on a bench in episode 6. Simply existing in the moment without any kind of narration or internal monologue is the kind of thing that I feel like is missing from a *lot* of modern anime and it's also why I love every Mitsuru Adachi adaptation I've seen so far.
[](#feelsgoodman)
I'm on episode 6 now, but even though I kinda got over the shitty CG bear - I can't help but notice the animation does leave a lot to be desired. Does the animation quality improve? Is it just going to be at this level the entire way?
Part of me just feels like I should dive into the manga instead. I can read manga much faster than the anime would take as well, which leaves me more time to watch other stuff like Prism Rondo.
The manga is probably better, since the anime cut some side stories out (some of them released as OVAs instead), but the anime is great as well imo.

point to yes!
