Why is the "petite but adult" character trope so common and profitable in the anime industry?
I'm a newcomer to anime and I’m curious about a specific design trend. I've noticed many popular characters (like Tatsumaki from One Punch Man) have very small, youthful appearances but are portrayed with a mature or stylized appeal.
Is this mainly a marketing tactic to sell merchandise to a specific "Otaku" demographic, or are there deeper cultural reasons in Japan for this "youthful aesthetic" in character design? I’d like to understand the business and artistic logic behind why studios choose this style so often. Thanks!

but also, the Japanese just…like cute things.
I’m sure someone else knows more about the topic than me
Interesting theory...
There is something rooted in Japanese mindset but I lack the actual knowledge for that

As for the significance of youthful aesthetics in Japanese culture, in post WWII Japan an image of a young girl was associated with Peace, Hope and Future. While young boys used to become solders and fight in wars, young girls were free from such painful for post-war Japan associations, plus emerging feminist authors like to write young girl as strong and mature characters, constantly defeating bigger men, which since then became a cultural stamp. Plus many authors saw male politicians as hawks who failed Japan during WWII and placed their hope on future female leaders. Additionally kids in general were seen pure from the sins shouldered by wartime Japanese.
These ideas dominated anime in 50-70 and still present in some forms in modern anime.
