Charlie was way scarier than those guys in this scene
Forthebettergood002026-01-27 19:08
damn, it looks so cool. what is this about? is it a comedy i guess?
TheWhiteHunter2026-01-27 19:53
Definitely not a comedy. More of a Drama / Thriller. Charlie is the first Humanzee, born of some messed up science lab stuff. He was raised by a family and going to high school is his first real social interactions so it's a mix of that, and also a Vegan terrorist group that is bombing things and wanting to get a hold of Charlie for nefarious reasons.
Forthebettergood002026-01-27 20:59
oh thank you i was mad wrong there haha
Conscious-Milk-1552026-01-27 21:45
how on earth did you gather from this clip that this is a comedy?
postbansequel2026-01-28 00:54
What made you think it's a comedy? The clip was pure action, with no silly sht.
abandoned_idol2026-01-28 03:25
It feels like a "rule of cool" action anime with morals/philosophy wedged in.
I'd highly recommend it for the Monkey-Man and anime Obama.
Minimum_Ad_60402026-01-28 08:07
How the hell did u think its a comedy anime
BabyWitchErika2026-01-27 19:26
i wasn't gonna watch this, cause the premise seemed goofy. but hot damn, i'm in now.
abandoned_idol2026-01-28 03:19
Welcome to the Charlie fan club.
(I knew he was gunnu be so cuul)
riverane2026-01-28 07:29
Just don't read ahead in the manga, it may turn you off from this.
foowfoo2026-01-28 18:38
Yeah I saw a post on twitter which spoiled ahead at first I didn't think the panel was real but turns out it was...
nullv2026-01-28 18:58
Which panel?
foowfoo2026-01-28 19:02
iirc it was in chapter 38

I felt the same way. But damn i'd be lying if i said I wasnt locked in.
trufin20382026-01-27 19:28
The monkey kempo is quite well animated.

Agreed.

NighthawK19112026-01-27 20:26
That lockpicking technique is legit.
However I question why they'd use that when it'll be loud. They even did it when everybody is awake.
Mowfling2026-01-27 21:07
Key bumping for those curious, standard picking would be quieter.
zodiacv22026-01-28 06:15
I'm pretty sure standard picking would be way louder. I've seen enough LPL to know you'd definitely hear the person at the door: "little click on 3, nothing on 4, 5 is binding"
CuriousBroccolli2026-01-28 11:09
LMAO
Well, unless it's masterlock. xD
__T0MMY__2026-01-28 12:00
Idk where him and McNally get their locks but picking a lock where you can see, hear, and feel each tumbler obviously pass the shear point in as if it were made of Jenga blocks always bugged me
Like out of the 100+ locks I've collected maybe two are like that, and one is the clear practice lock
misunderstandingmech2026-01-27 22:43
idk if you pick yourself, but it can also be quite loud, and sometimes time consuming. Real world locks can also be pretty gunky and unlubricated, im decent at it on practice locks but sometimes it takes me like 10 minutes to pick a friend's door (I act as their locksmith, lol). Bumping may be the better option just because it's so fast. Rather than generating a continuous stream of artificial noises, you get one weird noise. Maybe someone glances in that direction then goes, "huh, musta been the wind".
EdgyPlum2026-01-27 23:14
There are rubber gaskets (rings) that would greatly reduce the sound, and they are shown in the animation. When done correctly it's minimally loud, almost the same as fiddling with a tension wrench while scraping the back pins.
Raven123x2026-01-28 12:54
Doesn't work for complex locks with false gates and security pins tho
ScourgeHedge2026-01-27 20:33
Was gonna watch this but then I found out in the manga \[manga spoilers/nsfw comment\]>!the monkey-human guy and the girl have intercourse!<and I decided I didn't need to anymore
Edit: Didn't think being against zoophilia was a hot take but looking in the replies I guess I'm in the minority on that here
Dragon_Bench_Z2026-01-27 22:13
Why anime gotta do weird ass stuff like that….. really gives anime a bad rap
7se72026-01-28 00:18
Okay normie 🙄
Dragon_Bench_Z2026-01-28 00:51
Yes bc disliking beastiality is a hot take.
cootsie2026-01-28 02:43
I think the point they are trying to make is this:
1: bestiality is inherently wrong because the Animal cannot consent. Its morally and instinctually repugnant because it is quite obvious abuse of a creature that cannot understand or verbally discuss any of it.
2: would it be morally wrong to have intercourse with an alien if it had equal or more intelligence than you? Lots of scifi tropes would say no, its fine if all parties are of similar intelligence and sapience. You could possibly argue that it has potential health risks for either party, but if both species were able to talk about it and still down, why not?
3: If you apply that logic, the morality of sexual interactions is basically ability to consent for both parties somewhere around the same level of intelligence and sapience. So we know neither party is being taken advantage of or being manipulated into acts they wouldn't otherwise. Ironically the reason you are immediately turned off by the very suggestion is instinctual, part of your genetic aversions. I think what they are saying is that it's interesting on an intellectual level to consider why we have these knee jerk reactions to things like this.
crxsso_dssreer2026-01-28 03:57
But sex with aliens is OK? OMG sue Mass Effect & Bioware! /s
sp0j2026-01-27 23:55
I think you are kind of missing the point of the show if you automatically dismiss it over that. It tackles racial prejudice and the concept of what makes someone human and what makes them an animal. I have no idea how that part is depicted in the manga. But I don't think it's an out of place taboo topic given the messaging the show has given in spades so far.
Prof_Acorn2026-01-28 00:20
>I have no idea how that part is depicted in the manga.
[Manga spoilers] >!It's mostly just to signify that they are dating. He is very direct and asks her if she would be his mate. She declines at first, but later on changes her mind. It's not like some hot and heavy ecchi scene or anything. But you're right in that the point is to raise the question of ethics. I appreciated it simply because it was actual relationship progress in an animanga (no "hold hands at the fireworks festival during ep12" here!). It raises ethical questions, shows how she sees him as an individual / his human side, and I think it's a great conversation starter for this kind of scenario. Like, I am super curious if the same people who have a problem with it would also have a problem with him having sex with a chimp. He's half human, with an intellect greater than a human due to hybridization effects. Does this mean he can only date other humanzees? Well there's aren't any others, so he has to be alone for his entire life? The series does a great job framing it narratively, shows how the different parents respond when they find out, and so forth.!<
There's more I could say, but maybe I'll leave the spoilers with that.
Hmmm, I guess a couple more things
[Extremely major plot twist level manga spoilers] >!Turns out there is actually another humanzee, his brother. But he looks more like a human with a tad chimp mixed in rather like a chimp with human mixed in. It makes me wonder if people would react the same if he was the one getting the girl, because he actually looks like a human. But instead he is positioned as the isolated one. A species with only two individuals represented. One with a loving family. One with pain and isolation. He's an awesome villain, akin to Magneto. And I'll leave it like that. But he won't show up this season unfortunately.!<
And also [Extremely major untranslated Japanese raws manga spoilers] >!Lucy ends up pregnant, raising even more ethical issues for the narrative to explore. And that's on top of how refreshing it is for two animanga characters to do something as taboo as discuss whether or not to abort. Even that discussion felt refreshing in the manga world, which again tends to treat physical intimacy as some scary thing that peaks with some unprotected hand holding, but was made even more complex because it's two minors still in highschool, and one of them is a human-chimp hybrid. But also the hybrid father is peak superhuman in strength and intellect and would pass on some powerful genes with implications as to what it means to be human in general.!<
The story is ultimately about the human condition, and does a great job raising that within this thought experiment of a human-chimp hybrid entering the world. It's unfortunate some people want to drop it over a rumor out of context from the story itself.

I wouldn't either, but I thought I'd comment them in case anyone didn't care but was curious about the topic in question.
Hope you enjoy the series :)
ScourgeHedge2026-01-28 00:47
Your spoilers just basically describe a zoophilia subplot and i aint about that shit. Same stuff happens with people defending mushoku tensei for having a literal pedophile as a protagonist you are supposed to like and want to succeed
ScourgeHedge2026-01-28 00:48
People saying shit like "yes the zoophilia is necessary for the plot" is why I can't tell people I watch anime bruh.
MastaChief112192026-01-28 01:39
Okay bro...
Single_Friendship7082026-01-28 03:37
It’s a show that’s trying to have a serious story about what defines humanity and you’re intentionally turning off your critical thinking to dismiss it, I guess the premise is too challenging for some people who only watch children’s shows.
ScourgeHedge2026-01-28 05:01
Why does a serious story about defining humanity have to include bestiality???
Single_Friendship7082026-01-28 05:54
To call it bestiality is to deny Charlie his personhood. I suspect you don’t call other sci-fi pairings bestiality, like Riker and his many liaisons in TNG.
Is your only issue is that Charlie looks too much like a chimp? I wonder if that if one of the themes in the story, but you’ll never know I guess
LunarKurai2026-01-28 06:29
Just out of curiosity, do you hold the same view when the human to animal ratio is reversed? Are you against anime where they're into catgirls?
ThatGoob2026-01-28 06:39
Of course not. That requires rational thoughts.
iamtheweaseltoo2026-01-28 00:51
Dude, you don't have to use pseudo-bestiality to tackle racial prejudice, and quite frankly, by making such chapter, i'm entirely convinced the author has that fetish and the racial prejudice is just an excuse.
There's no way a person is gonna think "you know what can help tackle social prejudice? drawing a human-monkey hybrid having sex with a regular human woman, yeah that's exactly what we need to tackle this injustice!"
No way in hell the author isn't into bestiality
sp0j2026-01-28 00:59
There is so much baseless prejudgment here it's ridiculous.
If you change him into a severely deformed human suddenly no one has an issue. But that is the thing about this show. He IS half human. Imagine the story being real. Are you really going to say he has no right to live as a human and form relationships? This is the entire point of the show. It's to make you question our own established morals and perceptions.
And the reason it is specifically using a half human half animal as a plot device for this messaging is because it also wants to tackle topics like morality in regards to animal treatment and eating animals and how intelligence and sentience can change perspectives on these topics.
It's a really interesting thought experiment. But you are just showing your prejudice ironically. Something the show repeatedly calls out.
iamtheweaseltoo2026-01-28 01:22
>If you change him into a severely deformed human suddenly no one has an issue.
Because that severely deformed human is still a human.
>Imagine the story being real. Are you really going to say he has no right to live as a human and form relationships?
Yes, without a second thought, and i severely question your morals. Especially since canonically he's the result of a lab experimentation that pretty much violates just about every moral and ethical rules you can think about.
The entire problem with your argument is that a human-chimpansee hybrid is something that simply shouldn't (and doesn't) exist, and any attempt to create one would be both a violation of human and animals rights.
It's one thing that he would've found someone that would've taken care of him and showed him compassion, give them food and shelter, but the minute they crossed the sex line is the second this stopped being a wholesome story about a victim of abuse and became just another weird ecchi/hentai.
You can downvote me to hell if you want, but anyone defending this is sick in the head
sp0j2026-01-28 01:30
He is an intelligent being.
Yes his creation was a violation of rights. But that doesn't mean you destroy him or deny his rights because of it. That's another violation of rights. Your morals are twisted if you can't grapple with this concept.
It's a thought experiment. You are getting stuck because you know it's not real. But imagine you speak to this half human, have real human conversations with them. Understand each other. Become friends. Imagine you did this remotely and didn't find out about his physical situation until later. Are you really telling me you would cut all ties and deny his humanity? Or worse kill him because he shouldn't exist?
Because if the answer is yes without question (I would assume it's not in your case). That's quite psychopathic. Most people would have some level of empathy. The ability to robotically shut that down or just not feel it at all is a concerning trait. But it would make sense why someone maybe can't grapple with this type of thought experiment if that's the case.
iamtheweaseltoo2026-01-28 01:43
>He is an intelligent being.
I don't care, he is not a human, he is a human-chimapansee hybrid , him being intelligent doesn't change that.
>It's a thought experiment. You are getting stuck because you know it's not real. But imagine you speak to this half human, have real human conversations with them. Understand each other. Become friends. Imagine you did this remotely and didn't find out about his physical situation until later. Are you really telling me you would kill him because he shouldn't exist?
It was a thought experiment, at first, and then later the author turned it into a ecchi/hentai manga
>Because if the answer is yes without question. That's quite psychopathic. Most people would have some level of empathy. The ability to robotically shut that down or just not feel it at all is a concerning trait. But it would make sense why you can't grapple with this type of thought experiment if that's the case.
Most people would categorically not accept a human chimpasee hybrid having a romantic relationship with a regular woman or a man.
Honestly dude, i hope you're just a troll, because if not, you're exactly the type of weirdo that give anime fans bad rep and the type of person i wouldn't want near me.
sp0j2026-01-28 02:04
Of course most people wouldn't accept it. That's the entire point. People are naturally prejudiced. We tend to gravitate towards people similar to ourselves and distrust people that are different and unknown. We have established morals and perceptions built through society and tradition. But that doesn't mean these morals always correct. I'm sure you're aware of some cultures having pretty toxic traditions.
The inability to grapple with this concept and just dismiss it is not the moral high ground you think it is. The whole point of the show is to make you think about these concepts and question where the line really is. It doesn't mean you have to change your opinion. But you aren't even attempting to think about it.
Id rather be a weirdo that actually uses my head to question things constantly. As opposed to a boring thoughtless sheep.
iamtheweaseltoo2026-01-28 02:09
>Id rather be a weirdo that actually uses my head to question things constantly. As opposed to a boring thoughtless sheep.

Prof_Acorn2026-01-28 02:11
What if he was 1/16th chimpanzee?
What about 1/100th chimpanzee? 1/1000th? 1/1,000,000th?
At what point in the ratio would his humanity grant him basic human rights?
iamtheweaseltoo2026-01-28 02:30
At the ratio where he wouldn't be the result of an unethical laboratory experiment.
And since humans and chimps can't naturally breed, that isn't a question that we can answer
Prof_Acorn2026-01-28 04:14
Well current humans might be said to be ~1/300,000th chimp considering our most recent common ancestor.
And most people alive today are the children of homo sapiens x neanderthal hybrids. Only a small percentage are pure homo sapiens.
Evolution is messy.
dellaos292026-01-28 03:02

But, then again this is reddit, of course this place is full of degenerates, really this is on me for commenting on random post that come up on my feed despite me not being subscribed to this cesspool of filth
BadPercussionist2026-01-28 06:34
I haven't read the manga, but the anime seems like it's not tackling racial prejudice, but animal prejudice and veganism. I am *very* biased since I'm vegan, but a lot of the stuff in the anime so far can be interpreted under that lens.
For instance: [Darwin Jihen anime]>!Charlie says he'd kill an animal if it posed a threat to him, regardless of whether the animal is a rat or a human. He also values human and animal lives. There's a whole plot point and multiple conversations about veganism. It also seems like the show is trying to have four types of characters: good vegans (Charlie's parents), bad vegans (the terorrists), good omnivores (Lucy), and bad omnivores (the two bullies). Granted, those categories work for real life, but they feel more pronounced here.!<

The main character Charlie, is a humanzee, a human monkey hybrid, who was born from his monkey mom like that in an animal testing lab. He was freed by eco terrorists as a baby.
He gets adopted and is trying to live a normal life, but these eco terrorists want/need him for plot reasons.
ZOEzoeyZOE2026-01-27 23:17
Well shit.
SigmundFreud2026-01-28 08:01
There was once a man who tried to create a humanzee in real life and wound up ballless.
EldritchCarver2026-01-28 17:12
Should've tried a bonobo instead. They're a lot friendlier.
Also, I don't know anything about this show, but the premise reminded me of this classic song by Sean Cullen: [The Chimp and the Woman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYa_7-BeROU).
Prof_Acorn2026-01-28 02:24
To add to what others have said, the manga won the 15th Manga Taisho award, beating out contenders like Dandadan and Oshi no Ko. It's pretty well respected.
And if you didn't recognize her, Charlie is voiced by the VA for Frieren and Anya.
RaDiOaCtIvEpUnK2026-01-28 07:41
Why does the anime have such bad reviews? Is it a shitty adaptation or something? The animation on this clip looks great, so that’s not it at least.
Minimum_Ad_60402026-01-28 08:05
Its a good adaptation, most people just found it weird
turkeygiant2026-01-28 08:28
You really can't uderestimate the ability of anime fans to overhype some shallow shonen show while ignoring everything coming out at the same time that actually has some soul.
SouekiSennoSTM2026-01-27 21:52
And we had another great additional episode today. Although as a thriller portraying the tense social situations which would inevitably arise from debate within society over how to treat or whether to integrate a new lifeform like this, the heated and contentious exchanges in dialogue at times can be as gripping and pivotal in essence as the close-quarters combat knife-fighting scenes. Except when it's that goofy sidekick bully pushing the War on Christmas.
This was the series I most anticipated going into this season and this year and it hasn't disappointed in that respect. It has has been and remains the best series of the season.
Wish we had more Sci-Fi - well, in general, but especially ones dealing with biology and the extremes of biology, different species' comparisons and contrasts and differing thought processes and modes of life, etc. It's also a little reminiscent of Kiseijuu in that way.
Astradifex2026-01-28 00:45
1:29s with more frame and movements than the entire 3rd season of OPM.
Chairmaker001002026-01-28 00:55
Eh, you got to pick between having chimpanzee strength and being able to throw (anything, including a punch) like a human. These are opposite sides of the same coin, you simply can't have both anatomically.
sp0j2026-01-28 01:20
What are you talking about? Chimpanzees can punch, throw etc.. They are very strong. Anatomically they have significant advantages over us. We evolved to use intelligence and tools. So we stopped using our bodies as much. We basically devolved in physicality because of this. We also prioritised beauty over other features.
Chairmaker001002026-01-28 01:43
It's not so clear cut that they are better than us in every way. The distance from where the muscle is anchored on the limb to the pivot-point is greater in humans, allowing for higher speed but less torque. Humans can clearly throw further and run faster and longer than a chimp. I take your point about punching, a trained human would throw a high velocity punch with relatively high KE to momentum ratio. The chimp would throw a slower punch that had more momentum behind it. However it would look like a clubbing basic punch, not the snapping speed of a human boxer.
abandoned_idol2026-01-28 03:24
Chairmaker, I bet that you know what you are talking about. You sound informed.
But let's note something:
1) The story claims that Charlie is not a Chimpanzee (I know, I know, it asks for a lot), but is instead a fantastical super-soldier (the justification is that the offspring of a human and a Chimpanzee created a creature superior to humanity).
I won't claim that this story is well written. I just wanted to let you, and any other dear readers know about what the show intends to do.
Yes, it's probably wrong, but it seems like they are going for the fantastical "rule of cool" route here.
MinusMentality2026-01-28 04:12
I know what you're trying to say, but evolving doesn't mean 'to get better'.
Us losing the strength our ancestors had WAS evolution.
Evolution is the observation of natural selection in hindsight, not a process.
Natural selection cares not about what seems like it would be better for survival, it cares about what traits kill you.
sp0j2026-01-28 04:15
I know. But I was talking about a specific set of traits that got worse for us because we didn't need them. Which is why I used the term devolve only for those specific things. We didn't devolve overall. But our ability to climb did. We evolved in a way where some traits improved. But other traits were unneeded and so were neglected.
BosuW2026-01-28 05:38
He's a human-chimpanzee hybrid

This anime is cool af, but i just can't watch it lol, if you understand just a little more of politics, so much stuff seems dumb and clearly not well thought out, it's too silly in the areas where they're tryna be serious and that ruins it for me
But damn Charlie can box, wow.

>if you understand just a little more of politics, so much stuff seems dumb and clearly not well thought out, it's too silly in the areas where they're tryna be serious and that ruins it for me
You could basically say the same thing about real life. A side effect of everything going on currently in the modern US has pretty much made me throw out almost any form of disbelief at how politics is handled in a made up setting.

The manga which this anime is based on have won multiple awards & even more nominations for even more awards but the anime adaptation have low ratings on every anime site, so at this point I wonder what is the reason for such low ratings? is it a story that people here in the West don't find that enjoyable compare to Japanese people or the adaptation is really bad?

The accurate depiction of how a bump key works is a nice touch 👌

I'd highly recommend it for the Monkey-Man and anime Obama.
(I knew he was gunnu be so cuul)
However I question why they'd use that when it'll be loud. They even did it when everybody is awake.
Well, unless it's masterlock. xD
Like out of the 100+ locks I've collected maybe two are like that, and one is the clear practice lock
Edit: Didn't think being against zoophilia was a hot take but looking in the replies I guess I'm in the minority on that here
1: bestiality is inherently wrong because the Animal cannot consent.
Hope you enjoy the series :)
Is your only issue is that Charlie looks too much like a chimp? I wonder if that if one of the themes in the story, but you’ll never know I guess
There's no way a person is gonna think "you know what can help tackle social prejudice? drawing a human-monkey hybrid having sex with a regular human woman, yeah that's exactly what we need to tackle this injustice!"
No way in hell the author isn't into bestiality
I don't care, he is not a human, he is a human-chimapansee hybrid , him being intelligent doesn't change that.
>It's a thought experiment. You are getting stuck because you know it's not real. But imagine you speak to this half human, have real human conversations with them. Understand each other. It was a thought experiment, at first, and then later the author turned it into a ecchi/hentai manga

Most people would categorically not accept a human chimpasee hybrid having a romantic relationship with a regular woman or a man.
Honestly dude, i hope you're just a troll, because if not, you're exactly the type of weirdo that give anime fans bad rep and the type of person i wouldn't want near me.
Lmao, okay
What about 1/100th chimpanzee? 1/1000th? 1/1,000,000th?
At what point in the ratio would his humanity grant him basic human rights?
And since humans and chimps can't naturally breed, that isn't a question that we can answer
And most people alive today are the children of homo sapiens x neanderthal hybrids. Only a small percentage are pure homo sapiens.
Evolution is messy.
But, then again this is reddit, of course this place is full of degenerates, really this is on me for commenting on random post that come up on my feed despite me not being subscribed to this cesspool of filth
Granted, those categories work for real life, but they feel more pronounced here.!<
I'm not mad or confused, in fact it's the opposite.
Wtf did I just watch???
He gets adopted and is trying to live a normal life, but these eco terrorists want/need him for plot reasons.
Also, I don't know anything about this show, but the premise reminded me of this classic song by Sean Cullen: [The Chimp and the Woman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYa_7-BeROU).
And if you didn't recognize her, Charlie is voiced by the VA for Frieren and Anya.
Us losing the strength our ancestors had WAS evolution.
Evolution is the observation of natural selection in hindsight, not a process.
Natural selection cares not about what seems like it would be better for survival, it cares about what traits kill you.
What's hilarious is that his "genetic father" is Dr Grossman.
But damn Charlie can box, wow.
You could basically say the same thing about real life. A side effect of everything going on currently in the modern US has pretty much made me throw out almost any form of disbelief at how politics is handled in a made up setting.
