I seen that it is (according to ratings) the HIGHEST rated manga of all time. I know they made an anime of it and I want to know if its worth to watch.
Hi Hazardous_Guy, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The 90s anime is really good.
Electronic-Net-56162026-01-28 00:06
The 1997 anime was a peak one. Every main character was shown well. And the ending was jaw dropping. The season ending was like a beginning of a peak storyline

Like Gantz, I wish the Attack on Titan team would re-do it. Manga has way better art than the anime

Really the only flaw with the 1997 anime was that it left a HUGE cliffhanger at the end, which they didn't fix in anime form until the more recent Golden Age Arc movie trilogy.
To be fair I haven't seen the more recent 2016 sequel (heard it wasn't very good).
Really the best bang for your buck is reading the manga (check your local library to see if they have it to borrow).

By what I remember of 2016 is that the story is passible but the animation is some of the worst I’ve seen.
They tried to stylize cg to look like hand drawn and it just doesn’t work. On top of the cg characters looking so uncanny that they would be right at home in zelda cdi.

Most definitely a good anime actually a great one you should check it out

Depends on which version. All but the 2016 berserk run are good.
The definitive way to watch it in my eyes is the original.
Watch Berserk 97’
If you can’t find it “berserk the golden age arc - memorial edition (2025)” is the next best way to view it. It’s the remake of 97’
The golden age movies are just a spark notes version of 97’ with cg instead of traditional
They also have berserk (2016) season 1 and 2 these are over a completely different arc of berserk. While all previous cover the golden age arc, a sorta prequel to the main manga, 2016 poorly attempts to adapt the Black swordsman arc of berserk.
The story itself isn’t terrible just the animation is some of the worst I’ve even seen. They tried to stylize cg animation to look like had drawn stills and it just doesn’t work.

I highly recommend checking out Berserk Redux the fanedit.
Buddy compiled all animated sources into one cohesive 10 "movie" experience.
10/10 would watch again
Then when you finish it you can read on from the manga and you will miss almost nothing.

Making my way through the original manga now (chapter 330), the anime adaption I've seen is the 1997 one which is highly acclaimed, a sentiment I'd agree with. Really the only downside to it is that it doesn't come close to adapting the full manga (I don't think even 1/5th of it).
Deszcz_W_Twarz2026-01-28 01:17
The 1997 anime was filmed to boost manga sales (it ends at a key moment). It's good (great OST), but compared to the manga, it looks weak. The rest of the adaptation can be ignored. Besides, given the current anime restrictions (censorship, etc.), Berserk has no chance of being faithfully adapted. But that's the problem with many seinen.

My god that OST. Music that stuck in my head for months(years?) after I'd watched the show. Now going to the youtube rabbit hole of listening to it!

It's definitely worth watching the 1997 anime. If you enjoy it, read the manga.
Maybe someday there'll be a complete anime series covering the entire story and maybe it'll even get the time and resources it needs to do it well, but that will not happen any time in the foreseeable future. The manga is still ongoing, after all.
Fine_Tension28762026-01-28 02:12
The old version is the best but sadly they never continued with the same anime style the rest of the arcs.
SouekiSennoSTM2026-01-28 03:40
The 1997 series is masterpiece-tier. One of a handful of 10/10s I'd give any series out of hundreds watched. An epic in scope and dramatic-emotional intensity.
And arguably of the best fantasies and the best dark fantasy anime series of all time. If it went on to have dozens or even hundreds more episodes than it did, I'd likely place it even higher on my list and it's already high enough.
TheStupid_Guy2026-01-28 07:50
Just read the manga. None of the anime adaptations adapts the entire manga and they all have their own issues.
