Can I start watching Gundam for the first time with 'Gundam Hathaway The Sorcery of Nymph Circe'?

I have never watched Gundam before, but I do watch anime in general. All I know is that Gundam is related to mechas but nothing beyond this.

I tried looking up the watch order and I couldn't find anything that leads up to this particular show (and all the alternate timeline stuff is confusing me).

I saw the trailer for 'Gundam Hathaway The Sorcery of Nymph Circe' on Youtube and it has piqued my interest in Gundam for the very first time.

Basically, I just want to know if I can go ahead and watch this as my first Gundam anime without having watched anything prior. If I can't, then what should I absolutely must watch to get up to speed to understand 'Gundam Hathaway The Sorcery of Nymph Circe'?

Any advice is appreciated :)

I read the post wrong I got distracted so my bad.

Before watching The Sorcery of Nymph Circe I recommend going all the way back to

Mobile Suit Gundam 79
Gundam Zeta
Gundam ZZ
Char's Counter Attack
Hathaway's trilogy

If im missing any please correct me 🫡

MRMAN12252026-01-28 01:36

If he's interested in a UC anime why would he watch the AUs?

Fine_Tension28762026-01-28 01:55

Cause i was clearly distracted and read it all wrong sir 🫡

This video is perfect! Thank you!

No, this is the second movie of three, of a story that heavily references the past.

Nomar_952026-01-28 01:25

This is a sequel to Hathaway's Flash, so you should watch that one first.

And Hathaway's Flash is a sequel to Char's Counterattack which is a sequel to ZZ Gundam which is a sequel to Zeta Gundam which is a sequel to the original Mobile Suit Gundam

timpkmn892026-01-28 01:41

> And Hathaway's Flash is a **sequel to Char's Counterattack which is a sequel to ZZ Gundam** which is a sequel to Zeta Gundam which is a sequel to the original Mobile Suit Gundam

Eh, there really aren't any plot connections between these two

newier2026-01-28 02:01

Arguably, you could just jump from Original Gundam straight to Char's Counterattack, there isn't a huge amount connecting it to Zeta either.

I wouldn't recommend it mind you, but it is an option if you wanted to get to the fancy new stuff quicker.

Goodmorning77352026-01-28 07:06

I would say that the relationship between Char and Amuro at the core of the movie is fleshed out in Zeta. So prob the most important thing to watch before CCA

OmegaVirgin942026-01-28 01:27

Well, that's the second film in a planned trilogy so right off the bat the short answer is "no".

The longer answer is that the Gundam Hathaway movies are part of the UC timeline and I'd recommend you watch through all that first.

The order I recommend is Mobile Suit Gundam '79 > Gundam Zeta > Gundam ZZ > Char's Counterattack. After CCA you can pretty freely watch the Hathaway movies.

MRMAN12252026-01-28 01:33

I would not recommend it. The Hathaway movies take place in late Universal Century, Gundam's main timeline.

I'd recommend watching Mobile Suit Gundam 1979, Gundam Zeta, Gundam ZZ and Char's Counterattack, and then the first Hathaway movie to have a good experience.

Roughly 150 episodes and 2 movies in order to watch the new movie

Wavenstein12026-01-28 01:38

Apparently one can skip ZZ (we love you, Kamille!!!) but I would suggest anyone watch everything else you mentioned before getting into the Hathaway Noah films.

MRMAN12252026-01-28 01:50

I wouldn't recommend it. It adds a lot to the UC experience imo. 2nd Neo Zeon War, Newtypess, Cyber Newtypes, the Ple clones, Gundam Team etc.

It's better to just watch everything in order than have OP go back in case he wants to watch more UC after they're done with Hathaway

Wavenstein12026-01-28 01:59

The official Hathaway channel says you can skip ZZ. That's what I was basing my opinion on

MRMAN12252026-01-28 02:02

True, if you purely wanted to watch Hathaway ZZ isn't the most important. You can fill in the links yourself after all.

I recommended ZZ in case OP actually became interested in the UC timeline and Gundam in general

Wavenstein12026-01-28 02:14

Yeah if it op wants to watch ZZ on their own then I'd have no problem with that. Just letting them know that they don't have to if they don't want to

OmegaVirgin942026-01-28 02:08

They also recommend watching the Zeta compilation movies which are bad. [That chart's](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gundam/comments/1pfl391/so_according_to_the_official_hathaways_flash/) purpose is to make it as easy as possible for people to get as many theater seats full as possible. If anyone is genuinely interested in UC Gundam then you should watch through the whole UC timeline, ideally sticking with the TV series, before watching Hathaway. Even better if you can fit in the OVAs.

cosmiczar2026-01-28 19:59

Not only that, but the Hathaway official channels posted *two* different charts, this one with just the movies, saying it's the fast way to catch up, but also one with the TV shows, showing the long way, and that one does include ZZ

JinxV82026-01-28 01:37

Thanks everyone <3

I've gathered the following watch order from the comments which I'm gonna go with before watching 'Gundam Hathaway The Sorcery of Nymph Circe':

Mobile Suit Gundam '79 > Gundam Zeta > Gundam ZZ > Char's Counter Attack > Hathaway's Flash

LongjumpingShip36572026-01-28 01:50

If you want to know where they are streaming MSG, Zeta, ZZ and CCA are all on Crunchyroll and Hathaway is on Netflix

a48406392026-01-28 01:52

A lot of people will recommend the 0079 movies trilogy over the TV series but the Zeta Gundam movies trilogy are a lot more controversial.
Besides the mainline story, there are also a lot of worth watching OVAs taking place in UC like the Origin, 0080 and 08th MS Squad

JinxV82026-01-28 01:56

Yeah. I'm planning to watch the 0079 movies trilogy and the Zeta Gundam TV series for those reasons.

OmegaVirgin942026-01-28 02:10

Good shit!

flatpetey2026-01-28 02:05

Just watch a non UC universe series like Witch from Mercury first. Then you can decide whether to go all in or not.

FrogNoPants2026-01-28 02:20

I watched Hathaway's Flash without bothering with the old anime shows(I did watch like maybe 7 episodes of MSG, but found it tedious after that).

freakmechpilot2026-01-28 03:03

Absolutely not. You wont have any idea what's going.

zephyrseija22026-01-28 03:20

You can definitely watch some Gundam series just as one-offs. The Witch From Mercury was a good, standalone series.
