Does bleach get good or is it not for me?
So I am currently at ep 18 after dropping it like 5-10 years ago at ep 5ish and it does got a bit better, but it just still has the vibes of old shounen like DBZ, naruto (which I liked a lot - but as a kid), I heard some things about the anime that sounds interesting like aizen character and such, and I really like shounen in general but it feels very not modern compared to JJK and DS. I see there are still new seasons which probably have the modern vibe more, but does the original anime get actually good at some point? if yes what EP?

If you insist on watching, check google on fillers and skip them. At least try watching Soul Society Arc first to know if this is to your liking or not.
It definitely retains the old school battle shonen flair for quite a bit. It gets progressively better and better but like you said, the real modern battle shonen flair is in the current thousand year blood war arc.
I'd say watch the soul society at the very least. For me it became enjoyable around that time and got even better in future arcs.
And I say that as a now new Bleach fan. It got some of the coolest factions and supporting characters in all battle shonens! And the last season will definitely be worth the sluggish start in the beginning!
However I ended up liking it and remember fondly about it. There are a few things the show does right. The characters are quite charming, and I warmed up to them, fights and aura farming have their moments (Ban-kai!) and world building is somewhat decent.
It's hard for me to argue whether the show is"worth" your time. It was for me. But I was also younger. Nowadays I for sure wouldn't be able to get into it anymore
because it isn't?
Bleach the manga made debut in 2001, so 2026 is actually its 25th anniversary.
In fact, Bleach came out merely 6 years after the original Dragon Ball manga ended (in 1995).
so yeah, Bleach is more in line of "old shounen" than "modern" ones.
all I can say is that the first arc of Bleach is indeed one of its weaker ones, the next one is actually where the series really becomes its own.
