Frieren: beyond journeys end is killing me.
I was sleeping on this show for some time while I finished some other ones, I am now 6 minutes into episode 2 s1.
I have already cried 4 times, excluding intro and outro I have currently watched about 28 minutes of content meaning on average I have cried every 7 minutes.
I love sitting down and getting invested into many types of show, and I have come to realise I really get affected by these things, which is strange since in my ordinary affairs I barely ever cry at anything.
something about sitting down and focusing my mind on a piece of media really opens me up emotionally, and that's pretty sweet.
anywho I'm off to cry some more times!

Also, if you watch Violet Evergarden (has the same composer as Frieren), you probably should invest in a pallet of tissues.
The episode with the mother leaving letters broke me.
Anyways I am jelly that you won't have to wait for S2
"Tell him I'll clear the way."
(Short answer: you can't really compete with shonen...)
Edit: ok, with *fighting-centric/personal-superation* shonen.
Now, if we look at the underlying theme...
But Frieren is also shonen...
The point raised by u/PerceptionOk8543 is fair, and while it is completely fine to like the series nonetheless, just as I do, saying that you are not "emotionally open enough to understand" says quite a lot about your media literacy. Frieren is a shonen, a slice of life with a dramatic undertone for sure, but still a manga/anime targeted at young boys.
Meanwhile my favourite shows are stuff like Haibane, Shinsekai Yori or Evangelion. These people are watching a shounen that makes them think they are smart and it got to their head. You can’t have any proper arguments with them, no one even tries to answer my complaints, they just downvote or insult
Again, Frieren is a good manga and an extraordinary anime, but it's still a shonen, with shonen tropes and shonen limits. Just like FMA is an epic story but it's not the Odyssey, Frieren is a dramatic story but it's not Wings of desire.
How about the way you reply to my critique of this good fellows understanding definitely also denotes smugness, and I am seriously doubting your media literacy now. 🤓🤓
Really grab some popcorn and fanta before sitting to those
And that occupies a tiny fraction of what’s primarily a battle arc.
This show really wrenches it out of me, too.
Shows crafted with this much care, attention to detail, and planning are rare. I'm glad you are taking the time to fully appreciate it! I'll tell you it's also quite good with repeat viewings.
I will die on the hill and think frieren was also the best animated show at the time of airing. You can pause it at any frame and put that up on a wall for how beautiful the background scenes are alone. Don't even get me started on how fluid the animation is (looking at you jjk). Where its not only incredibly well animated, but is also easy to follow.
Part of what makes frieren so good is the amazing talent of the young director. He is a prodigy in the making.
I like the fact that, most of the time, the episode isn't exactly sad, but it still manages to make you emotional. When the action starts, it kind of slows down. However, at the same time, you get more involved in the story.
The opening and ending themes become even more exciting, especially since they're customized for the anime!
I think there's:
Getting emotional because something reminds you of a personal experience.
Getting emotional because you connect with how the character is feeling during this experience.
I think frieren is slightly different, we all grapple with the death of a loved one eventually and yes that relation could make you sad (thinking about someone you lost) but it also hits you in the 2nd way (understanding the characters struggle and empathizing with them, feeling what they feel)
The main moments I teared up at were all happy memories of someone lost to frieren, and the quest to try and understand the value of a life however short it may be.
TL;DR
I think it does speak to the quality of the show in this case, as frieren comes under both personal emotional experience and emotional connection to the character.
Like bluey episodes, the wild robot, etc.
I watched the latest dragon maid movie and cried like 4 times.
did i just come across a sociopath out in the wild? lol do you not have empathy unlocked yet?
youve never cried watching anything at all and ive never ran a marathon, but i can empathize and understand why people cry after crossing the finish line. the hard work and dedication it took to accomplish what they set out to do resutling in a feeling of total triumph.
Genuinely what could have changed between S1>S2 to elicit such a strong reaction.
Even worse though then.
I have no idea why people find this entertaining other than a strong desire to get depressed. Every character you see will die. Not a spoiler. Just basic biology. Once person lives a very long time in a world where others don't. In the world of anime I know there is a audience for this so I hope you...enjoy? I have enough stuff in this world to make me feel sad...I come to escape to a happy place.
The first episode didn’t hook me up right away. It was slower than my regular shonen anime I like to watch. But the animation was stunning so I told myself I should give it a chance because why not?
Then the second episode hit me. I finally understood what the show is about and why it started off like that. I had to rewatch the first episode again and cried my heart out just like frieren.
It’s fascinating that we don’t even know anything about himmel but we get to see how he’s changed so many people’s lives in the story, especially frieren.
Frieren taught me about grief and how I took people for granted. It changed my perspective in life and how I treat people especially my loved ones now.
Then suddenly I play the latest chapter of WuWa and the music combined with some of the cutscenes and I'm crying like a baby.
I think the worst for me is Violet Evergarden, I've rewatched it a bunch and every single time it consistently brings me to tears.
Also has some shockingly well scripted and animated fight sequences considering that's really not the focus of the series.
The show dials up the comic relief frequency and potency starting at episode 5.
There's the pretentious gatekeepers, the ones who only care about the comedy (this one is me), apparently there's some prejudiced fans out there.
This awesome show attracts all kinds of fans.
There's also a small population of people who aren't fans of Frieren. Not everyone will love the same show (even if it's good).
Unfortunately, the rest of the show hasn't really stayed at that level for me. The first season stumbled through a shounen battle arc on the later half. Season 2 hasn't really done anything to bring back the magic of the start.
Still a great show, but not what I was hoping for at the start.
First 4 episodes broke me
I have now finished up to Season 2 ep 2, and I'm just like the others who wait patiently for weekly episodes. The wait is hard, given that I'm used to instant gratification, but i know it will keep me alive to have something to look forward to every week. Among the short stories shown in the anime, what really struck me was Sein's story, and what Frieren told him about doing what he's always wanted to do. "Now is all there is". It's never too late to be who you've always wanted to be.
Like happy crying lol
And i totally relate to you, the only 'sad' anime i almost cried to was violet evergarden. Meanwhile I'm out here crying to every episode of mha for the last two seasons, dr stone, and 100 girlfriends. Frieren s2 also almost got me and its only been like 2 episodes
