Dark/Horror of Life Anime Recommendations

Me and my little sister have been watching a lot of anime together, but she is looking for more darker anime with a slice of life feel to it. I have no idea what to look for with that. We have watched some slice of life, but i dont see them as dark imho. So any recommendations would be helpful! TIA!

The first thing that jumps out at me is Higurashi no naku koro ni? That's certainly dark and it's definitely slice of life-y when it forgets to be dark for a second.

As an important heads up, **for OP** and anyone else who might be interested in watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (Higurashi When They Cry), make sure you start with either: the [2006 anime](https://myanimelist.net/anime/934/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) (and it's [second half Kai](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1889/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Kai)), the original visual novel, or the manga adaptation.

The 2020 anime Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Gou (Higurashi When They Cry: New), is a sequel to the original story, not a remake. **Don't accidentally start with Gou**, as it's full of spoilers.

(_Note: in most (if not all) regions, the only Higurashi anime on Crunchyroll, is Gou. Also, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download._).

Higarashi - it's starts like more of a standard slice of life but turns dark decently quick.

This ugly yet beautiful has a lot of slice elements but goes more into action and Ecchi at the end so doesn't exactly fit your criteria. If you want to check it out you may want to do your own research.

Is your sister looking for something that's more like characters living out a "normal" life, but things often go wrong, and the overall tone of the story is dark/depressing?

Summer Hikaru died just came out. Takopis original sin too (very dark themes). Made in abyss is a very disturbing adventure series but it has lovely pacing and a great sense of wonder. When the cicadas cry goes between cute small town antics and psychopathic murders constantly. Shiki is about a small town with a vampire infestation.
