My Bride is a Mermaid (2007) - Eight Times Sun Seto Was A Good Wife
Sun Seto is the deuteragonist of the 2007 anime “My Bride is a Mermaid” and the titular mermaid. Now, I have made several posts on this anime in the past (which I have deleted) in which I have criticized it.
However, today, I have decided to talk about some of the good things in this anime. I LOVE the ending where Nagasumi beats the bad guy. I LOVE the scene with Masa confronting his past. And, while I stand by my belief that Sun could be better I have decided to list eight instances where she was a really good wife to Nagasumi:
**Protected Nagasumi From Death et al**
Though she wasn’t always there by circumstance, Sun has saved Nagasumi’s life from her psychotic friends and family on mutliple occasions. Whether it be by blocking Maki’s gun with her purse, blowing away Shark with her sonic screams, getting her mother to disciplin her father, etc.
**She Makes Him Stronger** [**et.al**](http://et.al)
As part of the above, Sun can use her mermaid voice ability, Song of the Heroes, to empower Nagasumi to make him physically stronger and more powerful. This has not only allowed Nagasumi to save her, but protect himself as well from would-be attackers. By the end of the series, theri bond becomes so deep, that Nagasumi gains power just being near Sun. Now THAT is saying something!
**She Makes Nagasumi a Better Person - et al**
All of Suns friends and family are immoral psychopaths whose love for her manifests in the worst ways possible. Being possessive and selfish. But with Nagasumi, it’s the opposite. In the very first episode, we see that Nagasumi was kind of a sarcastic brat. Not hard to imagine why, given that he was being raised by emotionally and physically abusive parents. Given that Nagasumi is a lot like his father, both being abused as children and called losers, it is very much likely that Nagasumi could have grown up to be just as miserible, uncaring, and abusive as his dad. However, once Sun comes into his life, and her natural charisma affects him as well, Nagausmi gains someone he not only loves but loves him in return, helping shape Nagasumi into a brave and selfess boy.
**Tried To Clear His Name - ep.5**
In episode 5, Shark chases Nagasumi and he has to run into the girls changing room to save his life. This, of course, leads to Nagasumi accused of being a pervert since he can’t tell anyone about the mermaid yakuza trying to kill him. By this point, Sun still doesn’t know Nagasumi all that well and she has no context on the situation either. But she still had faith in Nagasumi that there was a good reason behind it and tried to clear his name among the other girls.
**Helped Nagasumi Protect Others-ep.4, ep.5, OVA1**
Sun not only protects Nagasumi, but helps him protect others. In episode 4, she helped Nagasumi save his friend Mawari (who Sun was scared of being the daughter of a cop) from delinquents. In the following episode, she saves both Nagausmi and Mawari from being hit by a car. And in the first OVA, she empowers Nagasumi so he can save a little girl from a burning building.
**Fought to Keep Him from Lunar - ep.7**
Whens so-called best friend Lunar tried to claim Nagasumi as her own, Sun fought against her to keep him. Not letting another woman try to take her husband/fiance from her.
**Brought Nagasumi Home From The Moon - ep.11**
Nagasumi drinks mermaid mineral water, turns into a mindless giant, goes on a rampage, and is blasted to the moon. Sun refuses to move on (like Kai suggested to get with him) and tries begging the others present to help bring Nagasumi back. Then, with the magic spear provided by her mother, Sun is able to throw it all the way to the moon to bring Nagasumi back to earth and back to normal.
**Nearly Started A Gang War And Cut Ties With Her Psychotic Family To Get Him Back - ep.12**
In the previous episode, a misunderstanding leads Sun and Lunars Papa to believe that Nagasumi cheated on her with Lunar, and this episode is about Nagasumi being forced to marry Lunar. Despite still believing the misunderstanding, Sun still chose to crash the wedding to fight to get Nagasumi back. She even went as far as to ask Gozaburo to disown her from the Seto Group so her actions wouldn’t put the rest of the clan in jeaporody. Indirectly showing that she will fight and stand by Nagasumi, even if it means cutting off from the rest of her family (if reluctantly).
