Although this is a place for off-topic discussion, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

1. Be courteous and respectful of other users.

2. Discussion of religion, politics, depression, and other similar topics will be moderated due to their sensitive nature. While we encourage users to talk about their daily lives and get to know others, this thread is not intended for extended discussion of the aforementioned topics or for emotional support. **Do not post content falling in this category in spoiler tags and hover text.** This is a public thread, please do not post content if you believe that it will make people uncomfortable or annoy others.

3. Roleplaying is not allowed. This behaviour is not appropriate as it is obtrusive to uninvolved users.

4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

5. All /r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

scary. some of me does kinda want one, shame about the RHD-situation further compromising safety though. or else it honestly would be a good within-10-km-car.

[New CDF!](#michaelwink)

Looks like the weather is supposed to be bad *again* this weekend, haha. At least this time is looking like more of the fun snow side of things than just ice?

In other news, I became a mod of r/fireemblem this week. So far it's been fine, interesting to see how things work behind the scenes on a subreddit much smaller than r/anime.

chilidirigible2026-01-30 01:02

Weekends being bad for travel nudges me in the direction of randomly slamming a couple of vacation days into the middle of my workweek sometime in... late February?

JustAnswerAQuestion2026-01-30 02:19

I'm still getting emails about an in-person meeting in DC in the middle of my rewatch, but I still haven't been explicitly told to attend so I'm continuing to not book a hotel or buy plane tickets.

Zeallfnonex2026-01-30 01:50

... Why would you choose to mod a *second* subreddit? Aren't we enough trouble for you?

I'm curious now, though, what's Fire Emblem's equivalent of the donghua arguments here? Sub vs dub? Any recurring headaches like whenever MT gets a post here that catches traction?

Shimmering-Sky2026-01-30 02:01

> ... Why would you choose to mod a second subreddit?

Because (while the gap is still *very* large) that subreddit is [my second-most-used sub](https://i.imgur.com/ASSLMPo.png), and there's a new game coming out at some point later this year that is connected to Three Houses in some way. Knowing the chaos that happened on that sub when Three Houses was new (well, not like it really *stopped*, it's just less frequent now), I wanted to be able to lend a hand in keeping things safe for both newcomers and long-time regulars.

>Any recurring headaches like whenever MT gets a post here that catches traction?

[Another five years of Three Houses discourse.](#ptsd)

No, seriously, the Three Houses discourse got so bad [it made one of the mods step down](https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/fddd7c/im_stepping_down_as_a_mod/) less than a year after it came out. And while I said it's *less frequent* now, it still happens and it's the same arguments as it always has been every single time.

Zeallfnonex2026-01-30 02:08

LMAOOOOO I thought it was going to be about people glazing and hyping 3H over the other games (which also kind of applies to me, I think it's the most compelling and interesting writing of any of the Fire Emblem games, even if the gameplay isn't the absolute best,) not a constant argument over Edelgard's ethics. Or maybe waifu wars, there's enough waifus in 3H to fight over.

... Now I want to do another Golden Deer run. Or find one of the other FE games. Guh. Why would you do this to me?

Shimmering-Sky2026-01-30 02:12

Have you never really been on the FE sub? The debates about Edelgard (and Dimitri & Rhea to a lesser extent) have been so constant that people made memes about the whole "another x years of Three Houses discourse, somehow" whenever talk of a new game is on the horizon.

Zeallfnonex2026-01-30 02:16

The subs I frequent are this one, LoL, Clannad, Sangatsu no Lion (though that's mostly to catch when a new chapter releases,) and sometimes the Cosmere-related subreddits (Cosmere, Stormlight Archives, cremposting.) I don't really venture anywhere else these days...

More proof to just join the Golden Lions and smack *all* of them. Maybe I'll finally learn how to draw an archer and do a fanart of Claude...

alconnow2026-01-30 01:05

Looks like the **Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid** movie will be having a limited 2-day showing in UK on March 4/5

Surprised considering America only got a one-day showing

Infodump_Ibis2026-01-30 01:24

Weekdays, huh? That's one way of avoiding the BFI weekend figures.

I wanted to see how much better it would do than Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp (£698 : 01/11/2024 - 03/11/2024) or Alice In Wonderland -Dive in Wonderland- (£760 : 16/01/2026 - 18/01/2026). I think Koyomi Vamp was also mostly Wednesday/Thursday and that Saturday showing was one screen, Dive in Wonderland wasn't Sony but was apparently 14 cinemas only.

It's definitely not built for it. Honestly not my favourite as far as magical girl shows go even before binging (I'm sure I could find Precures I liked a lot more). Saw the My Neighbour Totoro theatre show in London, it was a fun time but I must admit, it did feel like parts of it were just added for time: an 86 minute film stretched into a 150 minute play.

The actors were all good but the stars of the show are the designs of the puppets for Totoro and the other creatures, their overall look and the way they could be expressive through their movements were incredible.

cheesechimp2026-01-30 03:01

That sounds like a lot of fun! I went and watched a theatrical screening of a recording of a Japanese stage production of Spirited Away once and the puppet effects in that were awesome. But yeah, Totoro is already a pretty relaxed story, there's not a ton of room to spool out the runtime much more. I love that movie though.

Why sometimes, when an anime you look forward too gets hyped up prior to its release.
But then when it starts, glazing and etc starts to occur, thus getting becoming overrated.
There are some anime i wanted to watch, but then when it becomes overrated, it basically kills the momentum and interest.
Then when people say this or that anime is overrated , people call it rage bait. Even tho it's an honest opinion
Is it just me or it just happens?
When an anime gets overrated, is it a double-edged sword too. So basically you either join the boat with all the latest hits or social media/media floods it on timeline to the point you get sick of seeing it and get tired of hearing all the praise, this getting overrated.
Thoughts???
Yes, i'm very choosy in watching anime

Vaadwaur2026-01-30 05:11

irisverse2026-01-30 06:22

Tetraika2026-01-30 04:28

I wanted to see if I could do a writeup about Cosmic Princess Kaguya, but then when I tried to look up stuff about the actual Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, I found that for some reason no one has seemed to try to talk about what the original actually is about. Or rather I keep finding discussions on the ghibli movie instead.

lilyvess2026-01-30 04:38

wow that is surprising. Seems like people are overlooking that angle

Tetraika2026-01-30 04:51

I think it's because it's kinda difficult to discuss considering that the previous English translations have some notable flaws and occasionally omits/misinterprets things (or at least according to Wikipedia).

And apparently, the oldest known full manuscript of the original is from 1592, while the story is much older, from around 900 or even older. The fact is, we might never really know what the original story was really about because the current oldest version we know would be colored by ideas of their own time.

It is also entirely possible that people just don't find it worth discussing. It really doesn't help that trying to find anything leads to discussions for the ghibli adaptation. Or random nothingburgers that tells me nothing new. Or the newest annoyance, AI garbage.

So noted Perfect Blue copier Darren Aronofsky has come out with an AI-"animated" series of shorts focused on the American Revolutionary War, "On This Day... 1776". They're being released on TIME's Youtube channel. I'm an AI hater to the very bone, but as long as it poses a threat to the future of animation as a medium I'm curious to follow its use in cases like this... without supporting it. So to a Youtube downloader I go to avoid giving it any watch time.

[](#shirayukieavesdrop)

You don't need me to tell you it is not good. You also don't need me to tell you that the claims it enables new possibilities in filmmaking is, likewise, completely bullshit. A group of students could make this concept at a higher quality. But it is interesting see AI wielded by like... an actual director. Most of it is still stitched together by brief shots (though some are surprisingly long, maybe pushing ten seconds), but there *is* a clear intent to stitch them together into clear scenes. Sometimes, an individual shot doesn't look bad. Sometimes the way the shots are cut between or framed has some genuine concept shine through. None of it is close to coming together into a full scene that looks acceptable. You'll be interrupted by something right out of a video game, or a series of five super quick sloppy shots, or the expressions will just totally fail to emote, or any number of other problems. There's dialogue, but the AI can't really support complex character interaction in a way that actually lets any of it... land.

So AI definitely can't make a good short film. But it's an interesting (and concerning) progress report on the fact it *is* getting closer than the utterly directionless chaotic nonsense that you might picture from the first AI "films" that made the rounds... shit, probably a few years ago.

[](#justno)

Vaadwaur2026-01-30 05:09

Resist the clankers!

punching_spaghetti2026-01-30 05:39

If anything, it makes me more comfortable in my opinion that both the doomers and the worshippers are widely of-base in their predictions of the capability of these models.

This is what a high-level director, SAG actors, and the full weight of a media company like TIME can accomplish. Meanwhile, David Lynch made *Eraserhead* 50 years ago with some dirt, some papier mache, and some dubiously-acquired umbilical cords, and it's a bajillion times more interesting.

ZaphodBeebblebrox2026-01-30 05:44

To be fair, Lynch also made a better movie than what a lot of directors can with 1000x his resources.

punching_spaghetti2026-01-30 06:38

but enough about *Dune*

LittleIslander2026-01-30 06:26

That's a fair point. It's partially "AI can do this now", which is how I framed it in my head, but also "this is all AI can do". Genuine talent and resources behind it and this is the best it can manage.

I'd put it in sensible chuckle tier. The metaphor's pretty straightforward and it's done in a cute and cheeky way. At the same time it's still toilet humour which you either love it or hate it.

That's my only criteria for whether or not it's good.

[](#mugiwait)

ZaphodBeebblebrox2026-01-30 05:56

I'm just wondering where their major will fall on my scale of animated portrayals of her. Nothing so far has come close to Oshii's in my book.

KendotsX2026-01-30 06:03

Assuming she's as close to her manga version as the design is, she'll be pretty different from all the animated versions. Should be fun to see what you think of her.

ZaphodBeebblebrox2026-01-30 06:07

[](#mugiwait)

The short version is I loved Oshii's and thought SAC's was pretty good (but would've been better if she wasn't wearing a leotard). A lot of the others I thought were too cutsey. I prefer a major who looks like she can and would murder me.

Ryuzaaki1232026-01-30 06:27

I'm tryna remember the title of this one movie I don't remember much about. Think it was done in the 90s though.

I just remember there was a kid hitting on an adult woman who keeps brushing him off and they end the film with her leaving an envelope of what is implied to be nudes that he opens and gets wide eyes looking at. I think there was phrase like "for when you're older".

Kind of has that vibe from The Book of Henry when an adult woman mouth kisses a kid who is like 12 and they act like that's a fucking normal thing to do.

She also might've died or gotten married idk wtf might not even be a real movie but a Ryu-GPT hallucination

irisverse2026-01-30 06:36

All I can think of is [Crazy Stupid Love,](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1570728/) but that was from 2011 and the woman giving the nudes to the kid was still in high school.

The writing for the final chapter was surprisingly good? It's not a very high bar since it's ultimately a shitpost game, but I still liked it. It was very fun to see characters that are *very* different to their usual vibes too, [like] >!gangsta Daiyousei!< and whatnot. I also appreciated that you could talk to *literally* any NPC throughout the game, and they'd all have at least a bit of custom dialogue. That was fun.

Overall I liked the game a lot! It's unironically up there as one of my favorite 100% free games, perhaps just below *Doki Doki Literature Club*. Then again, I've not played many free (single-player) games - perhaps there's stuff in itch.io or such that are as good, if not better. While I can't really place it near the top in my "Touhou fangame tier list", I did enjoy this game more than *Lost Branch of Legend*. I think I just prefer games with an actual story when it comes to Touhou, though. Shitpost or not!

In any case, I would recommend this game if you like Touhou, memes and shitposts. The gameplay is *fairly* simple RPG type thing, but that was fun too. 14 hrs well spent.

[touhou pop team epic/10](#cinema)

It seems there's an extra chapter in the works, and it should (?) have 4x more side content from what I saw, basically being a borderline sequel. I'll probably wait until it's fully out before I play that... though, I might forget about it before its out as well.

This Holiday... it was Really Awesome.

The fact that the Japanese think the English language is cool and exotic is nice and all, but sometimes I think it gets taken a little far.

I think back to when GaoGaiGar introduced a mysterious supernatural force called "The Power," or when Ojamajo Doremi had its main characters hunt for cursed objects called "Bad Items."

Basically, if I had a nickel for every 90s children's anime that gave an incredibly basic English name to some supernatural macguffin, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but... actually there's probably a lot more I just haven't seen aren't there?

[JoJo Confession]>!Sometimes I think back on the Studio APPP JoJo OVAs, and the more I think about them the more their adaptation of D'Arby the Gambler sticks with me. For an adaptation infamous for cranking up the darker aspects up to eleven, it was a surprisingly straightforward adaptation of this arc, even keeping a fair amount of the more comedic and over the top elements. In some regards it's the one arc I can actually say I kinda like more than its David Production counterpart. I mostly mention this because nowadays if you ever hear people talking about it it's only because of its adaptation of DIO's World, and even then only due to Satoshi Kon's involvement. And don't get me wrong, those episodes are gorgeous, it's just they kinda fall into the trap of being a tad too overly self-serious, and more importantly, DIO's voice is too much of a turn off for me to ever really appreciate them as a full package [](#gabdisgust "It's not even a matter of it not being Koyasu; the guy wasn't even the first DIO I heard, I grew up with Capcom game. "Sweet Child of Mine" as an anime ED isn't nostalgia, it's "You've gotta be shittin' me."

MrManicMarty2026-01-30 22:41

Thinking of buying an external SSD for anime purposes.

Currently using a USB plugged into my Fire TV. And play anime through VLC. Works well enough, though the sorting isn't great. But an SSD, a 1TB one - should hold all my anime I think? And because its connected by wire, should be easier to take out and put new anime on.

What'dya think? Smart? Dumb?

pantherexceptagain2026-01-30 22:44

It's not as bad as RAM, but SSDs are pretty ballooned in price right now as well.

MrManicMarty2026-01-30 22:56

Even external ones? I'm seeing 1TB for around £100, which does seem like a lot I suppose.

pantherexceptagain2026-01-30 23:07

I'm not super familiar with prices of externals vs internals with an enclosure, but still feel like that's very expensive for 1tb personally. Who knows when price will come down though.

MrManicMarty2026-01-30 23:09

Just checked, and I can get a 2TB Hard drive for cheaper than a 1 TB SSD. Soooooooo leaning towards that. Main concern now is the noise.

[](#schemingsaten)

pantherexceptagain2026-01-30 23:16

Moving parts means that they'll be noiser than a silent SSD obviously, but if you're listening through headphones or have your speakers on I don't think it'd be particularly audible. Could always just test it before adding any files and if it's too loud then return it.

[](#yuishrug)

MrManicMarty2026-01-31 00:33

I suppose it wouldn't be any noisier than my PS3 is playing games I guess...

junbi_ok2026-01-30 23:13

You can get like 5TB of portable spinny storage for less than that. Same footprint, just a bit thiccer. They're pretty quiet, from a few feet away you won't even hear it.

I miss the days when you could get a 1TB SSD for 65 CAD.

[](#tiredaoi)

pantherexceptagain2026-01-31 00:15

For curiosity's sake I was looking at my past RAM orders. In early 2024 I bought 64gb of RAM for $185 AUD. That same RAM is now $860 AUD.

[](#spinning)

junbi_ok2026-01-31 00:20

Similar story for the last RAM kit I bought, even though it's relatively low-demand DDR4 SO-DIMM. Market is absolutely fucked.

Ignore_User_Name2026-01-30 22:51

For anime don't really need an SSD, spinny stuff is fast enough.

And bigger, which means.. MORE anime!!!!!!!

[CDF Confession]>!I have a 20tb one for Anime, Movies and Music. Which is quite small compared to some other CFD hoarders!<

MrManicMarty2026-01-30 23:05

Figured external hard drives are larger and noisier, is that not the case?

Ignore_User_Name2026-01-30 23:30

But it's not really that bad.

And larger capacities also do require plugging to an outlet which is also tolerable.

MrManicMarty2026-01-31 00:32

To answer [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1qkb4gd/casual_discussion_fridays_week_of_january_23_2026/o2ia532/) from last CDF, 2 weeks of texting before a first date is pretty long, but that's because she was quite busy (resident doctor) and already had plans with friends last weekend.

Also, she's not texting that often (typically once a day). Though, we're also both sending blocks of text. Some would say she's probably not that invested, but again, resident doctors are busy and it's not like I have to restart the conversation myself, it's been flowing, just, asynchronously.

Well, there's also a chance 2 weeks isn't that long in France or something. My only source of knowledge about the norm is from the internet, and things might be different in France for all I know. For example, I read that you need to have an exclusivity talk in the US, while things are apparently considered exclusive from a few dates or the first kiss in France (though, with dating apps, the culture is becoming more similar to the US, so it's not as true).
But also, who cares about the norm? The important is the opinion of the 2 people concerned.

After nearly two years the FFVII Rebirth soundtrack is finally on Spotify. Which is neat, but the first OST release is still missing a *shocking* amount of music though. Far more than Remake was missing with its initial OST release.

They've also finally announced a release date for a Soundtrack Plus. But since that's only 5 CDs it should come out to 110~ tracks. In which case, they're still going to end up with like 300 tracks unaccounted for.

There are...ways to find it, which I probably cannot share on this sub. So I actually have two collages to share today, one on-theme and one *not*. I’ll start with the on-theme one: [My favorite trios in anime!](https://imgur.com/nyQlGOk) Had to limit it to 1 per franchise though otherwise Gintama and Macross would have hogged over half the list lol.

And then for the off-theme one… so a little over two weeks ago, I made a comment to u/KendotsX that I should make a collage of the dudes specifically from battle shounen anime that I find the hottest (because Kami-sama knows there are *plenty* of well-drawn dudes in those), but then this week I decided “Actually I should just do one for *in general*, albeit limited to one character per show so I don’t have one or two series dominating.” I *did* still end up with one series getting two reps because I just could not pick between the two characters for it, but yeah. (spoilers for Gundam 00, G Gundam, and I guess Bleach TYBW too; also slight NSFW warning for one of the images in this, which was apparently still enough to get Imgur to nuke it [](#finethen) so I guess I'm using imgchest for this one) [Here’s the hottest anime guys as decreed by Shimmering-Sky.](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/d4bd09ed3127.png) [](#mangaka) ~~Maybe I’ll do a bigger one *not* limited to one-per-show whenever I catch up on One Piece.~~
