Hey so I’m watching ghost stories for the first time and I’m curious
What exactly is this? I mean in a sense of how was it made? Because sometimes it feels like some voice actors found some footage and decided to just have fun but also some of the actual things going on match up
Either way it’s hilarious

From memory
- The original Japanese anime bombed. It was supposed to be a serious monster of the week horror story, bit it sucked
- The anime production committee had already committed to an English release
- The asked the dubbing company to do whatever they want but with 3 conditions as they were desperate to claw back some money. 1. Don't change the names as they had merchandise to sell. 2 Don't mess with the lore of the traditional Japanese spirits and ghosts. 3 The general plot beats should be followed (I.e. the kids find a way to exorcise the ghost).
- The English actors then basically ran in to be the first in the studio to set up their view of what they thought the script should be. And really went to town with it.
Bizarrely the English dub went so well, that years when a Korean version was dubbed it followed a more humour based approach like the English version

the reason that adv did what they did is because they didnt think western audiences would give a shit about it because ghost stories was incredibly japanese with the entire show being about yokai mythology and shows like family guy and south park were all the rage at the time and they wanted in on that market.
