i can't get into romance anime. any suggestions?
hello I am an avid lover of romance but when it comes to romance anime I end up always hating the character writing and find it incredibly boring and empty. this is odd for me cuz i love romace manwha and k dramas but when it's anime i cant. i find the female characters to be empty husks for the reader to project onto. and they are always depicted as perfect, nice, damsels in distress. the main characters have no flaws. However this is not the case with all anime. When it comes to shonen i adore some of the relationships. momo x okurun from dandadan and asa x denji from csm are some of my favorite relationships in all fiction. along with the apothecary diaries and ohshc are some of my favorite but the apothecary diaries is a period piece first and the main couple dont even kiss in ohschc. when its just an anime focused on romance i cant cuz its so boring and bland. even male directed romances intrest me more like my dress up darling cuz at least the main girl has a personality but when it just panders to men and the main girls all are head over hills with a loser for no reason whatsoever it just annoys me. which brings me to another big problem, i can never understand why the charecters even like eachother cuz they are so boring or such a dweeb. I tried to get into horimya but the main girls personality trait is being a house wife and she fonds over the dude for being emo for close to no reason and then he later stops being emo which was the only cool thing about him! just straight up insane behavior. and now im trying to watch when a fragrant flower blooms and the girl the dude likes is pretty perfect with no flaws whatsoever. the plot doesn't even make since and im really sick of the girl getting assaulted and they guy having to save her to move the plot along. whats so hard about writing a girl who can stand up for herself without needing a man? so what im getting at here is there any romance anime with a strong female character with flaws and a personality? that is not also directed at dudes who want to have a hot girl fawn over them for no reason along with a dude that also has flaws and a personality? does such a thing exist?
i know its not fair to compare the two but im quite fond of how manwha does romance. in most manwhas they have a strong and smart female lead. majority of the time its enemies to lovers and she doesn't entertain the idea of a relationship. the guy ends up fawning over her first and i quiet like that dynamic. both characters always have flaws and could even be seen as bad people to outsiders. cuz they are written like actual people who all think according to their personal experiences and beliefs! i like it when its a lot more realistic of how humans actually act.
if you read this far thank you for listening to me rant!

2) If you don't like romance, then don't bother. My answer will be the same as anyone else that has a variant of this. If you don't like it, why bother forcing it?
youll thank me!
(... and hate me for making you feel something. sorry, its that kind of feels. actually if you could watch it and then tell me how you liked it i would much appreciate it.)
I totally feel what you say. People have been telling me to watch Bunny Girl Senpai because it’s emotional and romantic but it’s just the same trash where every girl thirsts on the protagonist with goofy flirting. I would very much like to see more romance where it’s well done.
Had it been not a movie, I would have loved to see their daily antics and how their appreciation for each other turns into affection
And if what you really want is a smart female with an enemies to lovers thing, I'll agree with the other person who said Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, at least from the couple episodes I've seen.
Makeine - a recent anime that will age extremely well. Main girls who get rejected in their own love stories, and have to deal with their hearts broken.
Just Because - a melodrama that's simple, poignant and easily digestible.
Toradora - Strong main cast with simple banter and natural relationship progression.
Golden Time - college setting in which the main character loses his memory and comes to terms about himself and his newfound feelings.
Sing Yesterday For Me - underrated and worth a check out.
Kaguya Sama - a mainstream favorite. Two characters who obviously love each other but won't admit it out of pride.
Clannad - border line harem, but not over the top like majority harem + echi shit.
Domestic Girlfriend - no words.
Our Love Has Always Been 10 Centimeters Apart - a hidden gem.
Lovely Complex - high banter, energy and just fun.
ReLife - "isekai'd" romance, but non fantasy.
Your Lie in April - tragedy
