Why is there no God of High School season 2?
I just randomly remembered this anime out of nowhere, and honestly it hit me how insane it is that there’s still no season 2. When it first came out, it was genuinely peak the story, the animation, everything. It had so much potential, and it's kinda weird that it never continued.

It wasn't very good at what? Try again and rewrite your comment to make sense. Also the fact that you think anime shows get greenlit or not just based on your vague notion of whether you think they were very good or not is pretty dim and unhelpful in answering OP's question. They didn't ask whether you thought the show was good or not, they asked why it didn't get a second season.
>peak the story
Hmm?
But to answer your question OP; from what I recall, God of High School was a manwha adaptation and was an exclusively Crunchyroll produced show following right on the coatails on Tower of God and was very much a 'testing the waters' type of thing to see if it would take off - while at the time it was fairly well recieved for its animation and being a high octane action spectacle it didn't really break out into popularity for whatever reason (I think mainly due to pacing issues with the plot and it just being overshadowed by other shows at the time) so there was no incentive to greenlight a second season or keep adapting it.
- Manhwa readers for some reason didn’t like it and kept claiming its rushed and animation is traded with story.
- It’s part of the test that Japanese studios were doing in order to see if anime community will like manhwa adaptations.
- From my POV if it was another studio and not a busy one like MAPPA, there would be another season.
I watched it when it first aired and I honestly can't remember much if anything about the story. As for the animation it was ok, maybe (slightly) better than the average/what we usually got back then, but compared to what we've been getting since then I don't think that it stands out.
*Its biggest advantage/draw was that* ***it actually aired!*** The first pandemic spring and summer were a disaster when it came to what anime actually managed to air without (major) issues. There's a bunch of shows that got somewhat artificially popular back then just because they aired.
A season 2 of God of High School would have to compete purely on its merits and if it can't do that, and I don't think it can, then it's going to be a financial loss for the backers, so obviously they won't make a season 2 in this case.
The manhwa has been over for like 3 years, how many of the people who would watch a hypothetical 2nd season do you think would buy the manhwa or the BluRay or merch to make a 2nd season be financially viable? It would have to be incredibly popular (or it would have to be a significant downgrade to cut costs, e.g. Tower of God 2) to make it viable just from streaming rights alone.
Whether or not an anime gets beyond the first season is typically dictated at the start, with multiple seasons being ordered, or, the anime does a very good job and it makes financial sense to spend more money on continuing it later and sometimes a show will get picked up after a very long time if there is new interest, or a new business wants to try again.
