Recommendations for my Wife
My wife wants to get into anime and has tasked me with getting her some recommendations. I’ve only ever watched shonens and she has made it clear that she isn’t interested in that genre.
She is a girly girl in her 20s and mentioned that she would be interested in romance anime as long as it wasn’t too gooner. Preferably following a woman mc.
Ideally they have a decent English dub, and if you could include what streaming services shows are on.
Edit: Include language of dub

Kaguya-sama: Love is war - follows both povs, some say its more comedy than romance but id say its still romance because the whole premise of the comedy is usually based on romance. + many eps, side plots/romances, movie
You and I are polar opposites - It is airing right now, promising, girl's pov mostly
Your name - probably the best anime movie ever, has romance, is beautiful, follows both povs, supernatural elements/plot
Weathering with you, Suzume - basically successors to your name, but standalones. similar, romance, supernatural elements/plot. In my opinion romance is still a main focus in the three movies.
Blue Spring Ride - Haven't watched it but it fits I think
Apothecary Diaries - The go to recommendation when someone wants a recommendation for girls, romance subplot and largely female fandom
Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota - light, sweet, school, opposites attract
Blue Box, The fragrant flower blooms with dignity - 2 of the most popular new romance animes, follow the males pov I think but they are pretty amazing. S2 for both coming soon I think this year. Dub isn't great for flower according to what I've heard tho. I like the dub of Blue box.
edit: I think all of these have an english dub from last I remember, except inexpressive..., you and i.... and inexpressive maybe?
Erased. It’s not too many episodes and is great for a new anime person. The first episode makes you want to watch the second and so on.
Bunnygirl-Senpai

Kino’s Journey
Samurai Champloo (great English dub)
Durarara
Toradora

Code Geass (if it’s not too shounen. Great English dub)
Kamisama Kiss
Maid Sama
(All the villainess ones are great and most dubbed too)
Spy x family
Howls Moving Castle
Into the forest of fireflies light
Yona of the dawn
Clannad
Fruits Basket
Nina the starry bride
Kaguya-sama: Love is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends-
Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion
Kimi ni todoke
With You, Our Love Will Make It Through
Romantic Killer
I really recommend complete anime for a newbie, as it gives you the payoff and hooks you. Given her age, I think these are thoughtful selections.
- Paradise Kiss (full of wonderful drama between the leads, lots of fashion and maturity)
- Horimiya (good solid cast, funny, no really annoying love triangles)
- Fruits Basket (introducing a bit of the fantasy element here, but very solid story telling based in modern real world times. Story is moving and thoughtful the further you go with some comedy to counter the darker themes)
- Honey in Clover ( art students dealing with unrequited love, the meaning of life, talent vs. skill, meaning of life)
- Violet Evergarden + ovas + movies (this will really showcase the beauty of storytelling lots of touching tears)
There's lots more but I really think this is a good starter pack.
Love through a prism (Netflix)
My happy marriage (Netflix)
Kimi ni todoke (Netflix)
Anne Shirley (Chrunchyroll)
Kakuriyo no yadomeshi (Chrunchyroll)
A sign of affection (Chrunchyroll)
The too perfect saint (Chrunchyroll)
Sacrificial princess and the king of beasts (Chrunchyroll)
Slow subtle romance due to status differences
Alot of focus on plot, politics and mysteries.
\+1 Kamisama Hajimemashita
