is this supposed to be a a teaser for how the awards will go?
Maybe Detectivecure will be better, but having heard a little about how many corners Toei cut on the franchise lately (I say lately when most entries past Hugtto had it rough) and Detectivecure's schedule already being a mess, I'll temper my enthusiasm.

It's hanamaru and kirakilala, respectively. No really, there were 3 kirakilala and one hanamaru in [the baton pass alone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkDDQEGTq0g) (Anna/Answer hasn't started her show and already has a catchphrase stat). Maybe in Japanese these come off a bit better as I remember the Naruto dub went with dattebayo=believe it and had to dial that back (I heard they played into how annoying it was during a filler ep).
Any anime with a similar serious tone and strong story?

Sometimes that can be wonderful, but the real lack of an overarching plot and a super high pace makes it hard for a lot of things to carry any weight.
After meeting her once like 30 episodes ago does anyone really care much about Mai? In episode 3 Maki mentions that the Zenin clan moved their weapons out of Jujutsu high, is it even really established that they were there?
I know that a lot of JJK does have that back up where they mention something off hand at some point in the story, but it seriously lacks a sense of "interconnected-ness" for lack of a better word.
I still gave season 2 a 9/10 because the story can absolutely deliver when it wants to, it can nail the "how" but not always the "why" and that's really difficult when moving from one arc to the next.
JJK does have some serious misses in my opinion but when it hits it's amazing.
It's some later parts down the line that potentially could be a bit more divisive, but the anime adaptation is making the delivery things overall better. Like how the anime made the culling game exposition dump so much better with how they delivered the information.

In a decade it will be the Shingo Yamashita of Naruto, creator that did some big but controversial eps, but later on became industry legend

* *[Arne no Jikenbo](https://myanimelist.net/anime/60255)*, probably turns "shouneny" but seems like good fun anyway
* *[Champignon no Majo](https://myanimelist.net/anime/60509)*, watched the first ep and like how the characters seem just that slight bit unhinged
* *[Dark Moon](https://myanimelist.net/anime/59853)*, this is going to be peak, but I'll wait until I can binge it because these kinds of shows are best binged
* *[Eris no Seihai](https://myanimelist.net/anime/60151)*, first episode was kind of dumb, but it was a fun kind of dumb so I'm here for the ride
* *[Fate/Strange Fake](https://myanimelist.net/anime/55830)*, a Fate anime with characters *even crazier* than usual, *and* I don't have to be caught up with FGO to watch it? Sold.

* *[Seihantai na Kimi to Boku](https://myanimelist.net/anime/60371)*, the title had me worried, but the first ep was really fun and charming, so this is probably going to be good

[Umamusume Cinderella Gray Part 2] >!Why did Tamamo Cross retire?!<
Did I miss this? Was it supposed to be vaguely implied somewhere? Was it explained in part 1 that I've completely forgotten about? Was it just not explained at all?
[](#skyhype)
Time to start a new season of Precure, fall off around the time the initial team comes together in a month or two, and binge the rest next January just before the finale.
Dub watchers are willing to wait for the dub if one is bound to come. Meanwhile the sub watcher hold more importance in watching it as soon as it comes out in Japan.
I guess the dub must have done well to warrant this. But it’s a bad business decision.
I am guessing however long the delay on the US side is the actual delay for the dub itself. Such a weird situation.
This story captures the variety and contradictions of human socialising so well. Could even relate to Asa's need for standing out sometimes and frustration when her attempt fails.
Glad I'm all caught up finally. Just in time for the Valentine's day mega rewatch to start. Hope I can balance that and my seasonals okay. I'm down to 16 weekly shows plus Prism Rondo, which I started but have paused. That's just a little over what I was watching last season, so doable I hope.
Still in awe of people who watch twice as many every season or more. This seems to be the limit for my sanity. Any more and I will likely lose track of plot threads.
[](#concealedexcitement)
> Any more and I will likely lose track of plot threads.
This is one of the main reasons why I've switched from watching new shows weekly to picking a couple at a time from my backlog to watch in full over a week or two. I tend to forget where things left off these days if there's too long a break between the last episode I watched, or I'm following too many stories at the same time. It happens a lot with manga too, which I'm still trying to keep up with weekly (because of the free chapter schedule).
I feel like this is the sorta thing I'd like to see in a cinema. I feel like it's kinda worth watching for the visual spectacle alone. The story itself is kinda only serviceable. It's a bit of a hectic show that tries to do too much almost, but it looks good while doing it so you can kinda forgive it.
It was a fine way to enjoy an evening, but I'm probably not really going to be looking back or thinking about this show as time goes on.
In short film news. [Ai Nina](https://x.com/ainina_0211) is apparently releasing her first [short film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1KBaFvGaAg) in a few days. Interesting to see all these artists who usually make MVs go more into storytelling. Harumaki Gohan releasing the [first episode of their original anime](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q6uIpgQpGE) today. Asuka Dokai announcing a [short film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fO4xuq5LOc) a few days ago with the same project that got us China Sui's [First Line](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQaSSLBb58Q). Kouhei Kadowaki working on his first feature length film with [We are aliens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wthJ_uLuPE). Exciting times.
For anyone asking "u/Komarist, why are you watching a PreCure series?" it's not because it's in the jury's AOTY. [Found it when checking what I missed in 2025.](https://i.imgur.com/XaG1xub.png)
[](#cantbehelped "Would rather watch the PriConne ONA but didn't find subs")
What can I do to get you to watch Nomo no Kuni?
[](#kannainspect)
Pros: Great sound design, liked the backgrounds, and was better at getting its point across ([Nomo no Kuni]>!How your mood can distort interpretations of events in the present that may change when later reflecting on them!<) in a limited runtime than the (admittedly few) other one-episode entries I've seen.
Cons: [Nomo no Kuni]>!An MC returning to her original world without leaving the annoying brother behind (or staying while sending the bro home)...!< Also could've done without the fish poop scene.
Here is what I got so far (missed some because I can't remember their names):
Recently finished:
-My Hero Academia (Final Season)
-Made in Abyss (all seasons and movie)
-Haikyuu!! S1/S2
-Angels of Death
-Toilet Bound Hanako kun S1/S2
-Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest
-Demon Slayer S4
-Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc
-Solo Leveling S2
-One Punch Man S3 (…yeah)
-Bleach TYBW
-Trigun
-Gachiakuta (great anime!)
I will update this list as I remember the rest of them lol
Still waiting for Hunter X Hunter season and Black Clover to come out..
If anyone has suggestions for something new to fill the gap while I wait for more seasons, I’m open to ideas!
shonen addiction + watched everything else = start One Piece
[](#fuukothumbsup)
I've also been watching **Disney Twisted Wonderland** and so far it's one of those shows that seems to get better as it goes on. The first episode was kind of rough and suffered from showing off too many characters without giving them time for a proper introduction. Now that the focus has settled on about a half dozen characters, it's easier to see their individual personalities and their banter is pretty fun at times. Missed opportunity though not having the MC be aware of Disney stories before he was isekai'd. It would've made for good comedy.

**A Sister’s All You Need** (2017) Comedy
**RideBack** (2009) Sci fi
**Parasyte: The Maxim** (2014) Horror
**Princess Mononoke** (1997) Fantasy
**Im A Spider, So What?** (2021) Adventure
**Call of the Night** (2022) Romance
Porco Rosso will be on one of the lists next week.
I will forever remember this as the show I literally pulled some of my hair out on video as a joke to [mild spoilers?]>!prove I wasn't a parasite!< because the show *didn't* make me cry when I normally cry at anything remotely sad. [](#azusalaugh) It was a good show, I just hated [Parasyte] >!Kana, so the show killing her off in episode 12 was [](#ok) to me.!<
>Princess Mononoke (1997) Fantasy
Got to watch the 4K IMAX remaster for this as the first time I ever watched the movie, boy was that loud. Fantastic movie that definitely lived up to the hype I had going into it though (people always told me I would *love* it since I'm a big Nausicaä fan).
[](#kotourashock)
but https://i.imgur.com/UQdkni4.png
My Ghibli catalog is pretty underdeveloped, but of the ones I've seen I remember this one being my favorite. I think everyone should watch more Ghibli, myself included.
> Call of the Night (2022) Romance
This is probably the closest another show has come to capturing the spirit of Monogatari for me, that combination of off-beat comedy and supernatural mystery/thriller. That's not to say that it's only value comes from aping another series or that it doesn't have its own identity though, I think it stands on its own merits as a really fun watch.
I was into it at the beginning, but lost interest partway through. I guess I'd recommend it to someone who wants to watch a gory thriller.
> Princess Mononoke (1997) Fantasy
Good movie, saw it in 4K restoration and it holds up not just as an animated movie, but as a fantasy movie in general. Has some very neat historical details about the Muromachi period. Might not be the most fantastic Miyazaki movie, but well worth watching for both anime fans and non-anime fans.
> Im A Spider, So What? (2021) Adventure
Fun take on the isekai formula, although with a middling production Aoi Yuuki hard carries it with her performance. Honestly worth recommending for that alone.
> Call of the Night (2022) Romance
Not as enamored with this show as many others, but it is far from bad. The second season is a bit more of my jam as things get more serious, but I totally get why people like the first.
Way better than anyone would suspect from the title. Comedy is my favorite genre, but what I appreciated most in this one was the character drama.
>So I'm a Spider, So What?
Production is pretty spotty, but Aoi Yuuki's performance makes it a fun watch anyway. I liked the early episodes enough to buy the books while it was airing and quickly caught up. The worst parts of the show were really compelling in the light novels.
Some really cool lines and the art is obviously stunning but I think it's kind of shallow when you compare it to a movie he made only 13 years prior.
Nausicaa is a lot rougher as it's an unfinished story but I think it has a lot more impact.
**Rideback** was pretty average sci-fi antiutopia. The only original thing was the eponimous ridebacks that were sort of transforming motorcycle mechas. Oh, and they had Nana Mizuki voicing FMC.
**Parasyte** was good. I would rather watch it agaon than most of this modern "dark" battle shounens. Though, to be fair, I have better rhings to rewatch.
Anyway, I've caught up on my seasonals so here's my [end of January tier list](https://i.imgur.com/QFX41Vo.jpeg). Winter to me is a strong season with several fantastic outliers, but also a lot of stuff that's just fine. I do plan to watch *Love Through A Prism* at some point, but I probably won't have time for that until we get closer to the spring season. This is because I'm very much expecting to fall behind next month, due to being very busy thanks to having to take a tentacle-faced goat from space through a dark portal next week. If you know you know.
How dare you?
[](#unamusedfern)
~~and what in the fuck is Kunon doing all the way *up there*?~~

WHY THE INCEST BETWEEN SIBLINGS
WHY ARE JAPANESE PEOPLE OBSESSED WITH IT??? I'M GOING CRAZY it feels like it's in every anime 😭
As someone who has siblings it's even more disgusting. Why ruin a perfectly nice anime with that 😭
Does someone know where this obsession come from?
Then: what's the obsession with incest that humans have like ewwww😭
Who needs "anime" when you have Game of Thrones?
THAT'S WHY I DROPPED IT 😭😭😭
Made me remember all the trauma
And honestly I think turning real Dazai's history with suicide into a running gag is much more icky than some casual brocon comedy.
For the gag about suicide idk I was suicidal and I find it funny lol, I guess it's very personal based on the person's way to cope
[](#ama)
I got 2 this season;
[Oshi No Ko's OP, ](https://youtu.be/QgIQbeRzkkc?list=RDQgIQbeRzkkc) and [Tis time for torture's OP!](https://youtu.be/KPSvI5K6O_k)
Seconding all these three.
These three and the *Medalist* OP for me.
Incidentally also the only shows I watch this season, but I like them a lot.
[](#teehee)
[](#hikariactually)
The one earworm I've had so far is [Ding-dong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcpOaVa12DA) though visually I'm also fond of [Tamon's dance with Utage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FL7bWoFisY) (it's her dress, really) and everything going on in [Polar Opposites' OP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIn6WqZ_Fs4).
The red dress is pretty cute, but it really is Utage's smile that makes this dancing sequence so endearing.
[](#mug7)
Expect to keep [MF Ghost S3](https://animethemes.moe/anime/mf_ghost_3rd_season/OP1) all season as it's eurobeat
Most of the great ones from this season have already been named, but I'd like to mention: [Medalist S2's OP](https://youtu.be/-hPpXrlgncE?si=eDlUr7nPbWtibr8_) and [Golden Kamuy S5's ED](https://youtu.be/SrmET-l5P_4?si=5KoGnHw32bqIbGlS)
Honourable mention: [Champignon Witch's OP](https://v.animethemes.moe/ChampignonNoMajo-OP1.webm). It pays hommage to the show's fairy tale vibe.
*Me, who probably listened to it 100 times on loop already*
[](#flustered)
OnK is genuinely a serious contender for my favorite OP of all time. Especially visually, it's just insane how every single frame is a painting.
But anyway, [Sunday Morning (Tis Time for Torture S2)](https://v.animethemes.moe/HimesamaGoumonS2-OP1.webm) and, maybe an unconventional pick, [Ersterbend (Shiboyugi)](https://v.animethemes.moe/ShibouYuugi-OP1.webm) are the ones I find the most enjoyable/interesting this season.
After [last year's board](/r/anime/comments/1pzeaux/anime_questions_recommendations_and_discussion/nwrffhf/) I decided to try another since I again had the right number of things for a specific theme, this one being romance-tagged anime that I've previously dropped. It's a terrible idea since it's committing to a full year of anime I often disliked enough to not want to continue, but I was never here to only watch good anime.
[](#badtaste)
I considered filling the free space with something else, but it would be one I hadn't previously dropped (Ranma) or not a romance (Most Heretical Last Boss Queen).
Overall it's about 36 cours in total so about a little more than an episode a day to complete everything. It's a pretty reasonable load, especially compared to last year's pace (3.7/day for everything, I ended up at about 2.8). Anyway, about the shows I've finished for this so far:
* Ueno-san was honestly *fine* if predictable with what its comedy was going to be, and nearly every weird and perverse situation she gets into is of her own doing in one way or another.
* Seirei Gensouki had a few interesting ideas but the overarching story didn't flow well, it felt like a series of disconnected plot hooks for the most part.
* Osamake had an idea to start with and then turned into a standard harem that draws things out. [At the end of the season] >!two side characters even point out that everyone's back in the same position things had been in before the end of the first arc.!<
* KimiZero I expected to take longer on since I started it on Thursday but it was an easy watch. The first episode is a hurdle with the guy being too easily flustered for my taste and that never fully goes away. I also wished it used the premise more, but looking past that it's a fairly sweet school romance and significantly better than the first episode had lead me to believe.
It has been kind of fun to go "Oh right, *that's* why I dropped it," at some point as I'm picking each of these back up since none of them so far have been due to a lack of time.
Not sure what I'll pick up next from there, I've been trying to find ties with what's currently airing but not spotting any more obvious links off the top of my head.
I personally regret finishing it, though.

It is… *fucking stupid* how good of a year for anime 2025 was. Especially after how relatively anemic ‘23 and ‘24 felt following a blockbuster ‘22, ‘25 hit me with more quality Japanimation than I could even keep *up* with.
Legit, the only deciding factor as to whether it was Orb or Call of the Night on that Anime of the Year list in place of A-Hotel and Gachi or not really is just *what day of the week nominations closed*, it could have gone any way whatsoever between those four in those last two slots and I’d be equally satisfied with my list, ‘equally’ meaning ‘not at all because I can’t choose all of them’. Heck, as baffling as it is, it almost makes it relieving that Fujimoto 17-26 wasn’t in the main AotY category because that just would have frustrated the decision-making process *even more* (though, seriously, I’m not quite clear on why Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 is listed under the Movie category while being a series of comparable length and release format to Takopi’s Original Sin, which *is* eligible for Anime of the Year proper? Strange.). Throw in Food for the Soul and the hypothetical alt-universe version of GQuuuuuuX that didn’t just… *completely* disintegrate in its last third (or just mono, that works too), and I could’ve easily had a double-length ten list of Anime of the Year candidates without even having to think about it, *snap* like that.
I’m also happy to see this Awards is continuing its grand annual tradition of cluelessly fumbling around with the Characters category in new, increasingly confounding and category-breaking ways every single year. Like, from the outset simplifying it down to a straightforward Best Main-Best Supporting-Best Cast is perfectly fine, but then *completely segregating* shows with ‘ensemble casts’ from shows whose characters can be voted on normally is a completely unnecessary nightmare complication, the whole enterprise is so vibes-based and imprecise (unless there’s some objective behind-the-scenes metric I’m missing) and bars a *lot* of great characters that could have been nominated on their own strengths. So for lack of other options in Supporting I said ‘fuck it’ and just nominated the hot bassist from Rock is a Lady’s Modesty, as it should be.
(Maybe I shouldn’t complain since I literally also would have had *way* more Main noms than would have fit the five-limit anyway… Mutsumortis, Uika, Nayuta, Yachiyo, Shizuka, Nagumo, Anko… fuck, what a good year.)
Iirc it did release as an anthology movie in cinemas first before being formatted into episodes. At least that's what I got told last time I asked the same question

The second episode still made me sob a good amount though.
I swear that something about this show is fine-tuned to destroy me emotionally in a way that I think only Honey and Clover has come close to before.

I find it bittersweet generally, balancing the sad times with the hopeful and silly, but it managed to break me eventually.

It took the foundations of the show, distilled them to the core, and expanded the stage to deliver a dazzling finale, curtain call, and the birth of a new chapter all in one package. [I understand](https://i.imgur.com/U2NBER4.png). But most important of all, I could *feel* it.
I am satisfied.
