Looking for Beginner Recommendations!

I’ve been wanting to get more into manga and anime. I’ve have started watching Death Note and Demon Slayer with my boyfriend which I enjoy both but I’m specifically looking for non fighting anime and manga. It would be even better if I could find a manga that I can read and then watch the anime to! I’m mostly open to anything, popular, unpopular, new, and old. I’m open to trying out any genre just leaning away from the main thing being fighting. (I do love demon slayer so far but fighting shows just aren’t my fav!)

What kinds of shows do you like? I’m hearing not fighting, which eliminates a lot of animanga, but there is plenty left.

Do you like romance? Comedy? Coming of age stories? Drama? Mystery? Thriller? Horror?

First off, movie recommendations. Both are popular reccs so you may have seen them, but…

Studio Ghibli movies. Specifically would recommend Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Castle in the Sky as the top 3 for your tastes.

Next up, Satoshi Kon movies and his 1 anime. This late great director has several films that question reality with incredible cinematograhy. The top 3 here are Paranoia Agent (TV Series), Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers.

As far as some shows separate to that, there are quite a few that come to mind, but will stick to a few in particular.

Apothecary Diary — Mystery, Drama, and Romance packed into an extremely well-received adaptation.

Ping Pong the Animation — Coming of Age, Sports, Drama. It’s janky and can be hard to look at but absolutely beautiful.

Summer Time Rendering — Mystery, Thriller, Horror, Action. Interesting story that I preferred the first half to the latter, but was a fun watch.

If you don't enjoy fighting animes that much, I would recommend the slice of life genre. Try My dress up darling, Horimiya, Haikyuu or maybe Oshi no ko! ☺️

ok listen frieren, gurren lagann,mha,steins gate, ts is the ranking of which shows grab attention easily from frieren to stg but keep in mind each anime is a masterpiece

Prism rondo - very new, it’s on netflix, it has comedy, drama, romance, coming-of-age theme, things are nicely wrapped in the end.
Violet evergarden - very emotional and beautiful, you may be crying on some episodes (or almost every episode if you’re sensitive, but it’s really worth it).
Shiki - it’s horror, but not jumpscare type, it makes you question what is good and what is evil, and music is very good, characters have crazy hairstyle lol, some gore scenes in second half.
Yona of the dawn - classic shoujo anime, fantasy, romance, adventure… and after 10 years they’re making another season!
Sign of affection - romance about college studens, with diabetes warning.
Angel next door spoils me rotten - shy boy, popular girl as neighbors starting to develop relationship, diabetes warning.
Zenshuu - animation is great, it has some fighting scenes, but they’re not long, I would say it’s mostly fantasy, but also with some romance.
Apothecary diaries - mystery, drama, comedy, a little pinch of romance.

If you like romance, I think you would love the following: Kaguya sama love is war, I want to eat your pancreas, your name, clannad, a silent voice, fruits basket, and some others I can’t think of off the top of my head

Back to Mushishi ........ you mention Manga - it's currently getting a reprint of five new volumes, the first of which was released last November. Volume 2 is due out in April. Both the manga and the anime are superb.
