Yeah, very literal war crimes was not on my bingo for digimon in 2026 either.
DissKhorse2026-02-01 20:02
I am holding out for a digimon tragic backstory of a son with two broken arms and a mother who helps him.
Masterness642026-02-01 19:04
Didn't think I'd see actual war crimes in Digimon.
Now death in anime meant for kids isn't new. Heck it isn't even new for Digimon which already had a reputation for being a "edgy pokemon clone". But having a character be a refugee from a war torn country that had all his loved ones bombed in front of him and now suffers from survivor's guilt and actively seeks a place to die is certainly new territory for the franchise.
For those who don't know about Digimon Beatbreak I'd highly recommend checking it out. Its still a kids show at the end of the day but its worldbuilding and characters have been excellent so far. It definitely has potential to be the best Digimon series to date if it keeps up this level of quality.
Poodicus2026-02-02 00:27
I do think the reason for why it has such a low level of people watching it is not only because it being a kids show, but because it airs so late in the night (in the west) on Saturdays, instead of midday like most anime.
Sgt_General2026-02-02 05:13
I've been monitoring it to see if it can hold the promise of the early episodes, but you may have just reignited my interest in this series.
moichispa2026-02-01 19:55
Yeah backstories for characters have been quite dark on this series so far: \[Digimon beatbreak spoiler\] >!dead parent, comatose parent figure, parent in jail, being kick out of their homes, parent wanting to leave them (and we are still missing some character info...) !<
ProfessionalRandom212026-02-01 20:24
They really hate parents huh
justking14142026-02-02 04:12
Well they need some reason why these kids are just off having digital adventures
Sgt_General2026-02-02 05:11
Damn, it's Takopi's Original Digimon up in here!
KingSammyJ12026-02-01 21:03
Nah this recent Digimon propaganda might actually get to me
I will watch it after I finish Gintama and Gurren Lagaan
username_is_alread-2026-02-02 00:27
\> finish Gintama
See ya in a decade?
TechZero352026-02-02 03:44
If he can get hooked, he can easily finish it maybe in 6months
username_is_alread-2026-02-02 03:52
I did watch a fair chunk of Gintama back in the day, but trying to get back into it feels pretty daunting
Still can recognize most of the OP/ED songs though
KingSammyJ12026-02-02 05:37
i am at s4 but I have also been watching for like 3 yrs now
i plan to finally finish this peak this year, i just have too many interests that hold me back
Mitosis2026-02-02 00:31
I tried a few episodes but I couldn't get into the character *or* digimon designs. Plot had an alright start but I just didn't like anyone.
IzunaX2026-02-02 08:13
If you enjoy JRPGs, the newest game, Time Stranger came out 4 months ago and it's fantastic, plays like Persona.
Jay_Tibs2026-02-01 21:28
Love the direction, it's heading in!
Magnus-Artifex2026-02-01 22:23
Nah, anime is messed up, especially shonen.
But yeah war crimes though
scielliht9872026-02-01 22:24
Oh, somebody actually talking about digimon.
Well, this is relatively not a kid's season. That was ghost story.
Not really all that into these seasons. It feels like there's a few digimon I'm into and I'm disinterested in the story. But maybe I'm not the target audience.
But... in this one, we get Monodramon as a side character's digimon. That, I like. That was my wish!
justking14142026-02-01 22:53
This reminds me of the one guys backstory from that yugioh season with Atlantis
warjoke2026-02-01 23:23
Reeealy trying to out-Tamers Digimon Tamers.
wutfacer2026-02-02 06:26
Unfortunately nobody as cool as Rika/Ruki. Or the gat bunny
VergilVDante2026-02-02 03:09
Are we not going to acknowledge that first evolution Digimon tanked a missile?
BengalSpiritCattery2026-02-02 08:03
it's pretty common for Digimon to not be affected by human weapons. In another scene this series, a group points guns at a tamer and he basically laughs at them because his giant-sword wielding partner is next to him
RX-79_Ez-82026-02-02 16:05
To be honest if you look back at western children tales and stuff like older Disney cartoons, they used to be a lot darker too. I remember being really scared by some of that stuff as a small child.
The overly sanitized children content culture is much more recent than we think or realize.
I'm not sure which is better but if it teaches kids to empathize with people in difficult and tragic situations it's probably for the better (especially for a country like Japan were contact with foreigners/the outside world is much more rare).
Growing up in Italy in the 90s-00s we always had in class some kids from families from Balkan countries fleeing from wars or from various African countries. I don't think many Japanese kids would have that sort of experience growing up.
