Is there an anime/Isekai in a Dark Souls world?

Hi there. I'm pretty new to Anime. A buddy introduced me to Isekai, but they're all so happy and cheerful. The protagonist is automatically awesome and within four episodes he has a half-dozen beautiful women falling all over him. The formula is tiring.

Is there an Isekai where a protagonist gets dropped into a fantasy world like Dark Souls, where things are genuinely hopeless and broken and horrible and the protagonist at least has to actually struggle?

Dark Souls was heavily inspired by Berserk. It isn’t an isekai but an amazing anime nonetheless the less.

all things considered the world of dark souls on the surface is a pretty generic one DONT DOWNVOTE ME GUYS LEMME EXPLAIN if u dont count the iconic locations as they are then they can also be summed up to a generic castle or something , in the eyes of someone uneducated on the games . also do note it is a japenese fantasy world that means it will be pretty similar to a world of any fantasy anime ( which it is ) . the world of a game and an anime is very different , for example a poison swamp level is something that enhances the world of dark souls , but that doesnt make sense in an anime unless its done right , and that "done right" part , the changing the world part is what eventually makes it a generic world

If you're looking for a "Dark Souls" anime, "Made in Abyss" isn't an isekai, but it is what I'D recommend.

As for isekai that feel like Dark Souls, good fucking luck, most of them are wish fulfillment. Most isekai are Literary-RPGs, most Literary-RPGs suck balls.

"Hai to Gensou no Grimgar" is an isekai where the heroes are broken, weak, childish, and mourning. The one season of the anime is nice, but the light novels don't last long before the writing takes a nosedive (writer was winging it hard, kept changing his mind, added anime tropes in the LNs at one point).

And if you're into primordial evil, Eldritch Lovecraftian deities, the works, you can find one such god inside "The Summer when Hikaru Died".

But I recommend giving up on having any expectations for "isekai". Well written isekai are not the norm.

I immediately thought about Made in Abyss. It's the same vibe and truly, once you start getting the nature of the curse a bit, it reminds me of the fog of Dark Souls.

not isekai, but Vinland Saga is an anime that was what finally tempted me to play Elden Ring after i dropped it for a year (brother got me to play it, my first ever souls-like game, didn’t enjoy it that much from the first 6 hours i played across a month). when i finished the anime i was all of a sudden itching to play it because it was the closest thing i could think of to experience something like that myself(?) just a suggestion based on my experience, might be something you enjoy :] the game i thought that was kinda mid ended up being one of my favourites of all time… all because of an anime is kinda cool

not isekais but some dark anime are: berserk, dorohedoro, jojo's bizarre adventure, clevatess, golden kamuy, hellsing ultimate, dorororo, elusive samurai, inuyashiki, made in abyss

actual dark isekais are: drifters, re:zero

Watch the first season of rising of the shield hero. Noafumi is an ordinary young man who gets isekaied into a fantasy along with three other heroes. Each of these three heroes wields a holy weapon while Noafumi can only defend with his holy/ (some say cursed) shield.

Everything seems like your typical isekai at first, however something feels off with how the kingdom of Maratmark treats Noafumi. While they praise the other three heroes they can bearly be bothered with him. He is betrayed and cast out as a monster.

Will he be able to trust again and help fight off the dangerous waves of monsters and calamities happening. How will he clear his name? Will he find somewhere to belong or will he give in to despair.

Not isekai, but still fantasy, Wizardry has a 50-minute OVA that's pretty good. Wizardry is probably the thing that had the biggest influence on the Japanese version of western fantasy.
