If you liked Madoka and AoT for how bleak they get you might really enjoy Made in Abyss. It starts deceptively soft but gets emotionally brutal in a way that definitely sticks with you. Shinsekai Yori is another one that slowly builds dread and leaves you thinking about it long after it ends.

Isnt Made in Abyss on hiatus and never finished or something? Or was I thinking of a different show
seventhlayercurse2026-02-02 11:54
Nah, its just that the Manga comes out really slow.
LordDShadowy532026-02-02 06:33
1. Made in the Abyss
2. Takopi's original sin
3. Berserk
4. Tomb of Fairies
5. Chainsaw Man (Manga)
6. Konjiki no Gash Bell (Manga)
On top of my head these are the ones that definitely left me a mark in my brain.

Rainbow

Goodnight punpun is the manga that is definitely dark and does stick with you for quite a while
In anime i do think that the summer hikaru died was quite emotional and cathartic in parts and does leave an impression! And the keichi hara directed movie (colorful) 2010 is also a very well done movie

As an important heads up, **for OP** and anyone else who might be interested in watching Higurashi When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni), make sure you start with either: the [2006 anime](https://myanimelist.net/anime/934/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) (and it's [second half Kai](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1889/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Kai)), the original visual novel, or the manga adaptation.
The 2020 anime Higurashi When They Cry: New (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Gou), is a sequel to the original story, not a remake. **Don't accidentally start with Gou**, as it's full of spoilers.
(_Note: in most (if not all) regions, the only Higurashi anime on Crunchyroll, is Gou. Also, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download._).

Lotm: isekai but the best one we have
Orb: just peak, like straight up peak.
Takopis original sin: ending makes no sense but well it is tragic.
Nana:...yeah
Made in abyss: tragic for sure but anime feels too short just read the Manga.
Higurashi: og but don't play the game it has no choices even tho it is a vn
Clannad: this got everyone watching it tweaking.
Angel beats: 🙏😭
Gundam 0080: all that blood for nothing.
Rainbow: manga is peak but I didn't watch the anime.

Grave Of The Fireflies.
If you want something that will make you cry but won't send you into life altering depresive episode, Princess Kaguya and Anohana are good options
If you want something with sinister/dark undertones like the ones you listed:
* Neon Genesis Evangelion
* Psycho Pass
* Death Note
* Tokyo Ghoul
* Vinland Saga maybe
Arville272026-02-02 07:03
I dont know what kins of 'dark' do you want, but here some that I personally think match with your example
- Made in Abyss
- Psycho Pass
- Guilty Crown
- Shinsekai Yori
- Re Zero
- Takopi
- White Album
- Zankyou no Terror
- Evangelion
and much more..
