Is anyone else having trouble focusing on watching anime these days?
Idk if it’s just me but it’s so hard for me to watch anime these day which is weird because I used to love it so much I would be able to watch more than 12 episodes a day but now I can barely watch even one. And whenever I do, it takes me 3 hours, I repeat THREE HOURS to watch a single 24 minute episode like it’s getting out of hand and idk how to fix it. I took a break from anime last year as well but it didn’t seem to help that much. I still pause a lot because I keep on overthinking everything and I just don’t know how to stop, does anyone have any tips on how to fix this? I just want to be able to watch anime like how I used to:(

Other than that, you'll just need to change your approach to the shows you're watching. Instead of trying to overanalyze every single detail, try to understand what you can understand through context like dialogue, music, and overarching themes. Most shows are very simple to understand the underlying concepts (like most shonen and isekai) through the first watch, but the deeper ones are designed for multiple watches, or deep dives through online and I'm person conversation. Each successive watch may reveal a different aspect since your brainpower isn't only focused on the overall plot, and different life experiences may change the approach (like the movie Get Out) you take.
What you'll need to do is just watch the show, and take what you can. If it's good enough to warrant a second watch, then you can organically take in more details since you already know the plot. Otherwise, I'm sure you can find some deep dives on YouTube, Discord, or online forums the find things you may have missed because nobody is that astute like that .
Nobody forces themselves to watch TV. Why are you trying to force yourself to watch anime
Maybe you just aren't as into it anymore. Ive only watched 2 anime in the last few years and thats fine imo
But it didn't happen when I was watching Hunter X Hunter, Vinland Saga or Orb.
I think you guys get what I'm trying to get at.
another thing could be that you're not interested in anime anymore, maybe you've watched so many similar series that you can recognize all the tropes and so it's just plain boring at this point. in that case try to watch something completely different from what you're used to.
finally, if you're having trouble paying attention to things in other areas of your life as well while having this issue of overthinking everything, maybe try consulting with a professional about the possibility of having ADHD.
It honestly feels like you should either just force yourself to not get distracted (put phone away and try concentrate) or try doing something even less dopamine inducing (read a book lmao) and slow and stop with anime for some time.
If it's not that, maybe you do have a problem with attention span. Have you considered that maybe you've been consuming too much short-form media? Maybe you could benefit from a dopamine detox and do other (perhaps even productive) things in between watching anime episodes.
Lastly, ask yourself if this only occurs while watching anime. I'm saying this last as a medical professional, but consider if you perhaps have ADHD or some other disorder on the spectrum if you notice you have trouble keeping up with focus in other aspects of your life like in school/work or while doing chores.
Also maybe take another break and concentrate on manga for while. As I've gotten older, I actually prefer manga.
Put in dnd mode too so no notifications pop up and have it out of your hands.
If you can't focus on a 20 minute anime (outro+intro combined, it's more like a 16 minute episode), you don't like it at all. I never stopped a episode to overthink anything in my life.
The only anime I struggled with a little was chainsaw man, because for 4 episodes I found it very generic and sex-oriented... the 5th episode suddenly gave everyone a normal background, some drama and an interesting, not just pure gorefest fight.
You have to ask yourself what you like, and why you like it. If you try to force yourself to watch something that doesn't move you, you will always struggle.
Also, try to join subreddits that are dedicated to the animes you like to watch, or talk about them with your friends.
I personally find it incredibly engaging to only watch one episode of a show a day, it gives you a simulated version of watching a currently airing show (except you’re watching it 7 times as fast) and it always gives you something to look forward to every day.
If that sounds like you, try to force yourself to take a significant time (at least a few weeks) without short form social media and see what effects it has.
